Chapter 2

Author: Oliver
When I sat back down in the waiting area, Lucian's crew started laughing again.

"Told you. No way Elara actually leaves."

"Made a whole scene just now, and look, she's right back here waiting for the Mate Bond registration."

One of them even held up his phone, pointing it straight at my face.

"Come on, let's record how long Lucian's future mate can keep up the tough act after getting her spot canceled."

The camera crept closer.

I raised my hand and blocked the lens.

He just laughed louder.

"Don't hide. You were pretty brave when you were grilling the Alpha just now."

"Let's see how long that backbone lasts."

Lucian finally frowned.

"That's enough."

But the guy waved the phone like it was nothing.

"Just recording. I'm not gonna post it to other packs or anything."

Lucian didn't make him stop.

The next second, he took a water flask from an attendant, twisted it open, and held it out to me.

"Drink."

"Don't ruin your health over something this small."

I didn't take it.

His eyes landed on my wrist. The clasp on my silver wolf charm had come loose, so he reached over, the way he had a thousand times before, and fastened it back.

The crowd immediately started whooping.

"See, Lucian always knows what to do."

"She was ready to explode a minute ago and he's already got her calmed down."

Lucian leaned down, voice low.

"Elara, I never said I wouldn't marry you."

"I just want you to understand that after you become my mate, you should still have your own life."

"Don't make everything about me."

"What happened today, let's just leave it here. Give everyone a way out."

His tone was identical to every other time he'd talked me down.

But this time, all I felt was the irony.

The humiliation was something he allowed.

The tenderness was something he performed in front of everyone.

And I had always swallowed my dignity because of that tiny scrap of warmth.

Someone nearby couldn't resist asking.

"Lucian, how do you have Elara so locked down?"

"She's been with you for years. I've never once seen her seriously fight back."

Lucian let out a quiet laugh.

"How long can she stay mad?"

"A few hours, tops."

"By tonight she'll be asking if I've eaten, what time I'm coming home."

The whole group cracked up.

Maya stood to the side. Her face looked uncomfortable, but she didn't say a single word for me.

Someone kept pushing.

"What was the craziest she ever got?"

Lucian thought about it. He actually looked like he was recalling something amusing.

"One time there was a storm. I was at a celebration with the warriors at the southern ridge. She was worried I didn't have enough guards, so she ran through the rain to come get me."

"We'd changed locations last minute. I forgot to tell her."

"She waited outside the old campsite until the middle of the night."

"When she finally found me, the first thing she said wasn't a complaint. She asked me if I was cold."

He said it like it was nothing. Almost bragging.

"So she'd never actually turn on me."

In that moment, the last trace of ache left in my chest disappeared completely.

So my thoughtfulness had never earned me anything.

It just made him sure I'd never leave.

The crystal clock on the registry wall lit up.

The clerk's voice came through the amplifier.

"All wolves who have not completed Mate Bond registration, please note. Today's window closes in ten minutes."

"Only four spots remain. If you need to complete family bonding registration, please proceed to the desk immediately."

I looked up right away.

The countdown on the screen was ticking down.

Lucian clearly misread my reaction.

He set the water flask beside me, voice still carrying that self-assured indulgence.

"If we can't make it today, there's always tomorrow."

"Everyone's been here a while. They're tired."

"No need to force it."

His friends jumped in immediately.

"Exactly, Elara. Give yourself a little dignity here."

"Lucian already said he'll come back with you tomorrow. Why does it have to be today?"

I didn't answer.

I just looked down at my phone.

Lucian seemed convinced I was still sulking. The impatience on his face gradually faded, replaced by that familiar, certain look.

"Elara, stop being stubborn."

"I told you. The position of Alpha's mate is still yours."

"You want to marry me? You can do it anytime."

I listened to those words, and all I felt was calm.

That used to be the one thing I wanted most. For him to promise, out loud, that he'd marry me.

Now I'd finally heard it. And I felt nothing.

Because I knew, very clearly, that I didn't want that position anymore.

Right then, my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

He'd sent a live location.

His coordinates were already inside Silver Moon's registry zone.

Then a message popped up.

[Traffic jam near the south gate. Going around the patrol checkpoint now.]

[Eight minutes, max.]

I stared at those words for two seconds. Typed back.

[Hurry.]

I put the phone away and looked up.

Lucian was still joking with his friends.

He hadn't even noticed that the person I was waiting for had already arrived.

Two months later, Ronan and I held the Moon Ceremony. It was set at the oldest Moon Temple in Shadow pack territory. Only the closest family members and a few Elders from both sides were invited. At first, I didn't want a ceremony at all. What happened on Bond registration day was too ugly. I didn't want my choices becoming pack gossip all over again.Ronan didn't try to convince me.He just placed two planning scrolls in front of me."One is a private family dinner. The other is a formal Moon Ceremony.""Pick whichever one you want.""If you don't want either, nobody's going to push you."I opened the second scroll. No elaborate pack formations. No forced aristocratic banquet. The moonstones in the temple would be rearranged to match my taste. The post-ceremony dinner wasn't set to the traditional Shadow pack menu. Instead, it was filled with every dish I loved. My mother's signature braised ribs were even listed.I looked at it for a long time. Then I closed the scroll."Let's do it.

After lunch, my mother asked me to grab the gifts she'd prepared for the Shadow pack from the car.I had barely stepped outside when I saw Lucian at the bottom of the stone steps. He'd changed out of his morning suit. The slap mark on his face still hadn't fully faded. A black suitcase sat at his feet, packed with the things I'd left at his place over the years. Our third-anniversary photo. Souvenirs from Moon Festivals we'd attended together. The silver wolf charm I'd picked out for him myself. He was standing there. Like he was waiting for me to look back."Ella, I've been waiting for you for an hour."He took a step toward me.I instinctively stepped back."You can just have someone deliver the stuff."Lucian stopped. His voice dropped."I'm not here to drop off a box.""Those things Darius and the others filmed, I made them delete all of it. The pack comm channel, I left it. I won't let them use you as a joke again.""And Maya, she can't reach you. She asked me to tell you she's wi

Darius was the first to sneer."You want me to apologize to her?""She already hit me twice. And now I'm supposed to bow my head?"Several pack members darkened too."You're the one who canceled the Mate Bond registration. You were there when they filmed her wolf spirit losing control.""Now that it's blown up, you want to dump all the blame on us?""Lucian, is this about regretting what happened? Trying to win Elara back by throwing your own brothers under the bus?"Lucian stepped directly in front of them."Nobody leaves until everyone apologizes."Darius laughed coldly and shouldered past him. Hard."Who gives you the right to order us around?""If you hadn't told us over and over that Elara would never leave you, who would've dared mess with her Mate Bond like this?""Now that she actually picked someone else, you're suddenly the devoted lover?"The color drained from Lucian's face. But Darius went all in."You're the one who said she had no limits.""You're the one who said that e

Ronan wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. His eyes were cold as frost."Why she chose to complete the Mate Bond with me is none of your business."Darius scoffed like he'd heard a joke."You really think she wanted to marry you?""Ronan, do you have any idea how much she did for Lucian over the past three years?""Picking out his robes before the Moon Festival. Running out in the middle of the night to collect him when he was drunk. Memorizing every one of his friends' birthdays. One word from Lucian and she'd drop everything to go to him."He stared Ronan down, voice deliberately raised."What you've bonded with is just someone Lucian threw away."I slapped him across the face. The crack rang out at the temple entrance.Darius stumbled half a step, clutching his rapidly swelling cheek, staring at me in disbelief.I looked at him. Not a trace of warmth in my voice."That slap is to teach you what respect looks like.""I used to hold back because of Lucian.""I didn't want him

The laughter in the hall died instantly. Darius snatched the phone and kept zooming in on the image I'd just posted."No way."He stared at the two family seals in the picture, still refusing to believe it."It's barely been any time at all. How could Elara have completed a Mate Bond registration that fast?"The people beside him laughed along."She was just clinging to Lucian and wouldn't leave. Now she's suddenly bonded with someone else? Who buys that?""It's obviously a fake. She had someone make a phantom image to get under Lucian's skin."But Maya was staring at the name on the image, her face going white inch by inch."Elara didn't fake it. The other name... is Ronan."Darius blinked.Ronan. Heir to the northern pack. The same man who'd formally discussed a Mate Bond contract with Elara's family three years ago.But he still wouldn't back down."So what if she knows him?""Ronan's all the way up north. He can't just show up at the Moon Temple with a family seal out of nowhere."

Close to noon, the hall's clock had already struck eleven.Lucian's crew showed no signs of leaving. They were busy planning an afternoon hunting party."I heard there's a new grounds down south. Wild boar today.""Then what are we waiting for? Registry's closing soon anyway. Let's go grab spots."Someone was already checking the feast list.Lucian walked over to me and took my wrist."Elara, let's go.""Today was just a hiccup. Tomorrow I'll come with you personally. Family seal, identity scroll, moon witness. The whole thing. Nothing missing."I slowly pulled my hand back."My mother's still waiting for me. She prepared lunch first thing this morning."Lucian's brow knotted immediately."You can go a little later. She's not gonna starve herself over a couple hours."He said it like it was nothing. Like my mother waiting for hours didn't matter at all.I looked at him."Can you stay for ten more minutes?""Let's finish what needs to be finished today."Lucian didn't answer right away.
