Chapter 3

Author: Oliver
I was watching the moving dot on my phone when my mother's call came through.

"Elara, how's the registration going?"

Her voice was warm as always. I could hear the kitchen in the background.

"I went to the market early this morning. Got the venison you loved when you were little. Had the kitchen put a stew on too."

"You said you'd come home after the registration, right? Lunch is all ready."

I held the phone. Went quiet for a few seconds before answering softly. "Mom, I'm not done here yet."

The other end went noticeably careful.

"Did something go wrong?"

"Is there a problem at the registry? Or... did Lucian get called away for pack business?"

"If today's not a good day, we'll just pick another moon phase. No rush. I'll talk to your father."

Hearing that, my nose stung out of nowhere.

"Mom, it's not about the date."

I fought to keep the roughness out of my voice.

"Just a small issue with the registration."

"Then don't worry about it."

She jumped in right away to comfort me.

"The Mate Bond can happen anytime. Don't fight with Lucian over this."

"If he's got pack business, let him go. Just be there for him."

I lowered my eyes. All these years, she'd always made excuses for Lucian. Always reminded me not to make things hard for him.

That's when a hand reached from behind me and took my phone.

I looked up. Lucian was standing behind me.

His expression was casual. Even had a hint of a smile.

"Ma'am, it's me."

"Don't worry, Elara's just being a little moody. If we can't make today's registration, we'll come back another time."

My mother rushed to agree. "Of course, of course. You two have your own plans."

"There's plenty of food. If you're late, I'll just keep it warm."

Lucian glanced at the time. Clearly getting impatient.

"We've still got things to handle here. I'll let you go."

He cut the call.

I watched him hand the phone back and felt the last bit of warmth in my chest go cold.

He didn't even know my mother hadn't finished her last sentence.

Someone nearby teased.

"Elara, your mom is so good to Lucian."

"She went all out for your Mate Bond, made all that food. If that were me, I'd be in tears."

Another young wolf chimed in.

"That's because Elara cares about Lucian so much. Everyone in Silver Moon knows she'd do anything to be his mate."

I listened quietly. Didn't argue. Because they weren't wrong.

At least, that's how it used to be.

Lucian put the phone back in my hand and grabbed my wrist in the same motion.

"Alright, enough. Let's go."

"If today doesn't work out, we'll come back tomorrow."

I looked at him. And suddenly that sentence cut deeper than it should have.

Tomorrow. Always tomorrow. Just like the past three years.

I'd postponed my family's alliance for him, over and over. And he'd never once asked what that cost me.

But today, no matter what, I had to honor the bet.

And Lucian still believed that a few sweet words would keep me standing right where I was.

I slowly pulled my hand free. "Lucian."

He looked down. "What?"

"Do you really think I'm going to stay no matter what?"

He frowned. "What are you talking about now?"

I smiled slightly. "Nothing."

"I just finally figured something out."

He looked like he wanted to ask, but I didn't explain.

My phone lit up again.

A message from my mother.

[Don't rush. Food's staying warm. Come home whenever you're ready. Mom's waiting for you.]

Below it, a photo.

The dining table covered with steaming dishes.

In the center, the roast she'd made especially for me.

I stared at that photo for a long time. Then I typed back.

[Mom, don't wait for us.]

I paused. Deleted it. Typed again.

[I'm bringing my mate home today.]

Two months later, Ronan and I held the Moon Ceremony. It was set at the oldest Moon Temple in Shadow pack territory. Only the closest family members and a few Elders from both sides were invited. At first, I didn't want a ceremony at all. What happened on Bond registration day was too ugly. I didn't want my choices becoming pack gossip all over again.Ronan didn't try to convince me.He just placed two planning scrolls in front of me."One is a private family dinner. The other is a formal Moon Ceremony.""Pick whichever one you want.""If you don't want either, nobody's going to push you."I opened the second scroll. No elaborate pack formations. No forced aristocratic banquet. The moonstones in the temple would be rearranged to match my taste. The post-ceremony dinner wasn't set to the traditional Shadow pack menu. Instead, it was filled with every dish I loved. My mother's signature braised ribs were even listed.I looked at it for a long time. Then I closed the scroll."Let's do it.

After lunch, my mother asked me to grab the gifts she'd prepared for the Shadow pack from the car.I had barely stepped outside when I saw Lucian at the bottom of the stone steps. He'd changed out of his morning suit. The slap mark on his face still hadn't fully faded. A black suitcase sat at his feet, packed with the things I'd left at his place over the years. Our third-anniversary photo. Souvenirs from Moon Festivals we'd attended together. The silver wolf charm I'd picked out for him myself. He was standing there. Like he was waiting for me to look back."Ella, I've been waiting for you for an hour."He took a step toward me.I instinctively stepped back."You can just have someone deliver the stuff."Lucian stopped. His voice dropped."I'm not here to drop off a box.""Those things Darius and the others filmed, I made them delete all of it. The pack comm channel, I left it. I won't let them use you as a joke again.""And Maya, she can't reach you. She asked me to tell you she's wi

Darius was the first to sneer."You want me to apologize to her?""She already hit me twice. And now I'm supposed to bow my head?"Several pack members darkened too."You're the one who canceled the Mate Bond registration. You were there when they filmed her wolf spirit losing control.""Now that it's blown up, you want to dump all the blame on us?""Lucian, is this about regretting what happened? Trying to win Elara back by throwing your own brothers under the bus?"Lucian stepped directly in front of them."Nobody leaves until everyone apologizes."Darius laughed coldly and shouldered past him. Hard."Who gives you the right to order us around?""If you hadn't told us over and over that Elara would never leave you, who would've dared mess with her Mate Bond like this?""Now that she actually picked someone else, you're suddenly the devoted lover?"The color drained from Lucian's face. But Darius went all in."You're the one who said she had no limits.""You're the one who said that e

Ronan wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. His eyes were cold as frost."Why she chose to complete the Mate Bond with me is none of your business."Darius scoffed like he'd heard a joke."You really think she wanted to marry you?""Ronan, do you have any idea how much she did for Lucian over the past three years?""Picking out his robes before the Moon Festival. Running out in the middle of the night to collect him when he was drunk. Memorizing every one of his friends' birthdays. One word from Lucian and she'd drop everything to go to him."He stared Ronan down, voice deliberately raised."What you've bonded with is just someone Lucian threw away."I slapped him across the face. The crack rang out at the temple entrance.Darius stumbled half a step, clutching his rapidly swelling cheek, staring at me in disbelief.I looked at him. Not a trace of warmth in my voice."That slap is to teach you what respect looks like.""I used to hold back because of Lucian.""I didn't want him

The laughter in the hall died instantly. Darius snatched the phone and kept zooming in on the image I'd just posted."No way."He stared at the two family seals in the picture, still refusing to believe it."It's barely been any time at all. How could Elara have completed a Mate Bond registration that fast?"The people beside him laughed along."She was just clinging to Lucian and wouldn't leave. Now she's suddenly bonded with someone else? Who buys that?""It's obviously a fake. She had someone make a phantom image to get under Lucian's skin."But Maya was staring at the name on the image, her face going white inch by inch."Elara didn't fake it. The other name... is Ronan."Darius blinked.Ronan. Heir to the northern pack. The same man who'd formally discussed a Mate Bond contract with Elara's family three years ago.But he still wouldn't back down."So what if she knows him?""Ronan's all the way up north. He can't just show up at the Moon Temple with a family seal out of nowhere."

Close to noon, the hall's clock had already struck eleven.Lucian's crew showed no signs of leaving. They were busy planning an afternoon hunting party."I heard there's a new grounds down south. Wild boar today.""Then what are we waiting for? Registry's closing soon anyway. Let's go grab spots."Someone was already checking the feast list.Lucian walked over to me and took my wrist."Elara, let's go.""Today was just a hiccup. Tomorrow I'll come with you personally. Family seal, identity scroll, moon witness. The whole thing. Nothing missing."I slowly pulled my hand back."My mother's still waiting for me. She prepared lunch first thing this morning."Lucian's brow knotted immediately."You can go a little later. She's not gonna starve herself over a couple hours."He said it like it was nothing. Like my mother waiting for hours didn't matter at all.I looked at him."Can you stay for ten more minutes?""Let's finish what needs to be finished today."Lucian didn't answer right away.
