Chapter 4

Author: Oliver
Close to noon, the hall's clock had already struck eleven.

Lucian's crew showed no signs of leaving. They were busy planning an afternoon hunting party.

"I heard there's a new grounds down south. Wild boar today."

"Then what are we waiting for? Registry's closing soon anyway. Let's go grab spots."

Someone was already checking the feast list.

Lucian walked over to me and took my wrist.

"Elara, let's go."

"Today was just a hiccup. Tomorrow I'll come with you personally. Family seal, identity scroll, moon witness. The whole thing. Nothing missing."

I slowly pulled my hand back.

"My mother's still waiting for me. She prepared lunch first thing this morning."

Lucian's brow knotted immediately.

"You can go a little later. She's not gonna starve herself over a couple hours."

He said it like it was nothing. Like my mother waiting for hours didn't matter at all.

I looked at him.

"Can you stay for ten more minutes?"

"Let's finish what needs to be finished today."

Lucian didn't answer right away.

He turned to his friends, face gradually darkening.

"You really need it to be today?"

"You want me to ditch everyone just for this?"

A young wolf laughed out loud.

"Elara, you're so clingy it's unreal."

"Lucian already promised he'll come back with you tomorrow. What, you think he's gonna run?"

The laughter spread through the group. Someone even started heckling.

"Or maybe Elara just can't wait to officially become Lucian's mate?"

I said nothing more.

Only Lysandra stood nearby, looking uneasy.

She said quietly. "Elara, I can stay with you."

Lucian cut her off. "Don't enable her."

"Give her a minute and she'll come around on her own."

He said it with a laugh.

"Hasn't it always been like this?"

"She can throw the biggest tantrum she wants. She always comes back."

More laughter.

I looked at Lysandra and gently shook my head.

"Go with them."

She opened her mouth. In the end, she didn't say anything.

Before leaving, Lucian even called a car for me.

"I'll have a guard pick you up before noon."

"If you can't make it today, don't just sit here the whole time."

"Go home and rest."

He said it like he was giving me one last scrap of dignity.

After they left, the registration hall finally went quiet.

But my phone kept buzzing.

Their group chat was still going.

[Guess how long before Elara comes running?]

[I give it half an hour.]

[Nah. Ten minutes.]

Lucian didn't stop any of them. He even sent a hunting grounds location.

[When you're done throwing a fit, come here.]

I glanced at it. Didn't reply.

Less than two minutes until the clock struck twelve.

That's when hurried footsteps came from outside the hall.

A tall figure pushed past the guards at the entrance and walked straight toward me.

Ronan.

He'd come at full speed. Ice still clung to his black cloak. He was gripping the family seal and identity scroll tight in one hand.

But when he reached me, he didn't hand them to the registration elder right away.

"You sure about this?"

He looked at me. Voice low.

"Elara, this isn't a game."

"If you're just using me to get away from Lucian, you can still walk away right now."

I shook my head. "It's not about Lucian. It's not about revenge."

I took the family seal from his hand. My voice was soft, but there wasn't a shred of hesitation in it.

"Ronan, I'm just honoring a bet I lost."

"This time, I'm choosing you."

Ronan was quiet for a moment. Then he handed the identity scroll to the registration elder.

"Then let's begin."

The clock struck twelve. The elder placed both family seals on the moonstone.

The next second, ancient silver runes blazed to life.

"By the name of the Moon Goddess, this union between two packs is witnessed."

"Both parties confirm the Mate Bond of their own free will."

I held out my hand. Ronan took it.

Silver light spread from our palms and rippled outward.

In that moment, I finally completed the bond that was three years overdue.

And the second the registration was done, I took a photo of our Mate Bond certificate and posted it online.

Ten minutes after I posted it, Lucian's group chat suddenly blew up.

Someone had screenshotted my post and dropped it in.

In the photo, Ronan and I were standing in front of the moonstone.

Underneath, one line.

[Wait, Elara actually completed the Mate Bond?]

At the hunting grounds, the group that had been laughing and drinking went dead quiet.

Someone stared at their phone.

"Lucian..."

"You need to see this."

Lucian frowned and took the phone.

When he saw who was in the photo, every trace of a smile vanished from his face.

Someone asked, barely believing it.

"Wasn't she waiting for you this whole time?"

"How did she end up bonding with your rival Ronan?"

Two months later, Ronan and I held the Moon Ceremony. It was set at the oldest Moon Temple in Shadow pack territory. Only the closest family members and a few Elders from both sides were invited. At first, I didn't want a ceremony at all. What happened on Bond registration day was too ugly. I didn't want my choices becoming pack gossip all over again.Ronan didn't try to convince me.He just placed two planning scrolls in front of me."One is a private family dinner. The other is a formal Moon Ceremony.""Pick whichever one you want.""If you don't want either, nobody's going to push you."I opened the second scroll. No elaborate pack formations. No forced aristocratic banquet. The moonstones in the temple would be rearranged to match my taste. The post-ceremony dinner wasn't set to the traditional Shadow pack menu. Instead, it was filled with every dish I loved. My mother's signature braised ribs were even listed.I looked at it for a long time. Then I closed the scroll."Let's do it.

After lunch, my mother asked me to grab the gifts she'd prepared for the Shadow pack from the car.I had barely stepped outside when I saw Lucian at the bottom of the stone steps. He'd changed out of his morning suit. The slap mark on his face still hadn't fully faded. A black suitcase sat at his feet, packed with the things I'd left at his place over the years. Our third-anniversary photo. Souvenirs from Moon Festivals we'd attended together. The silver wolf charm I'd picked out for him myself. He was standing there. Like he was waiting for me to look back."Ella, I've been waiting for you for an hour."He took a step toward me.I instinctively stepped back."You can just have someone deliver the stuff."Lucian stopped. His voice dropped."I'm not here to drop off a box.""Those things Darius and the others filmed, I made them delete all of it. The pack comm channel, I left it. I won't let them use you as a joke again.""And Maya, she can't reach you. She asked me to tell you she's wi

Darius was the first to sneer."You want me to apologize to her?""She already hit me twice. And now I'm supposed to bow my head?"Several pack members darkened too."You're the one who canceled the Mate Bond registration. You were there when they filmed her wolf spirit losing control.""Now that it's blown up, you want to dump all the blame on us?""Lucian, is this about regretting what happened? Trying to win Elara back by throwing your own brothers under the bus?"Lucian stepped directly in front of them."Nobody leaves until everyone apologizes."Darius laughed coldly and shouldered past him. Hard."Who gives you the right to order us around?""If you hadn't told us over and over that Elara would never leave you, who would've dared mess with her Mate Bond like this?""Now that she actually picked someone else, you're suddenly the devoted lover?"The color drained from Lucian's face. But Darius went all in."You're the one who said she had no limits.""You're the one who said that e

Ronan wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. His eyes were cold as frost."Why she chose to complete the Mate Bond with me is none of your business."Darius scoffed like he'd heard a joke."You really think she wanted to marry you?""Ronan, do you have any idea how much she did for Lucian over the past three years?""Picking out his robes before the Moon Festival. Running out in the middle of the night to collect him when he was drunk. Memorizing every one of his friends' birthdays. One word from Lucian and she'd drop everything to go to him."He stared Ronan down, voice deliberately raised."What you've bonded with is just someone Lucian threw away."I slapped him across the face. The crack rang out at the temple entrance.Darius stumbled half a step, clutching his rapidly swelling cheek, staring at me in disbelief.I looked at him. Not a trace of warmth in my voice."That slap is to teach you what respect looks like.""I used to hold back because of Lucian.""I didn't want him

The laughter in the hall died instantly. Darius snatched the phone and kept zooming in on the image I'd just posted."No way."He stared at the two family seals in the picture, still refusing to believe it."It's barely been any time at all. How could Elara have completed a Mate Bond registration that fast?"The people beside him laughed along."She was just clinging to Lucian and wouldn't leave. Now she's suddenly bonded with someone else? Who buys that?""It's obviously a fake. She had someone make a phantom image to get under Lucian's skin."But Maya was staring at the name on the image, her face going white inch by inch."Elara didn't fake it. The other name... is Ronan."Darius blinked.Ronan. Heir to the northern pack. The same man who'd formally discussed a Mate Bond contract with Elara's family three years ago.But he still wouldn't back down."So what if she knows him?""Ronan's all the way up north. He can't just show up at the Moon Temple with a family seal out of nowhere."
