Chapter 1

A sharp ringing went through my ear and blood ran down my neck.

I fell, and the robbers rushed in, tore off my necklace, grabbed my valuables, and disappeared down the alley.

Three, two, one. I counted in my head. Sure enough, there was applause behind me.

Chloe was leaning against a silver-gray sports car with her phone camera pointed at me.

Her eyes crinkled with laughter. "Evelyn, that was awful, but at least you didn't scream this time."

Several younger members of the Moretti family were passing money back and forth.

"See, I said she wouldn't get out of the way."

"What a shame! She almost cried just now. I bet she'd cry within three minutes."

Chloe laughed even harder. "Try again next month. You can still win it back!"

She scrolled through the video she had just taken. "She barely reacted the last few times. I was getting bored with it."

Adrian glanced at her screen. "That should be enough to keep you happy."

Chloe took his arm, laughing. "Barely."

I had seen this scene often enough over the past year.

They had gone from snatching my phone in the first drill to firing live rounds at me now. Each time, they laughed harder and raised the stakes.

It wasn't until today that I finally admitted there was no such thing as a robbery drill. They were only amusing themselves at my expense!

Adrian came closer and looked at the blood on me. His smile faded slightly. "I agreed to live rounds. I didn't tell you to shoot her."

The one who fired said, "Ms. Marino said we were too far off and she didn't react enough."

Chloe didn't care. "It didn't hit her. And the look on her face just now was hilarious."

Someone beside her laughed too. "We spent a whole year trying to teach her. She should consider herself lucky. I still don't understand why Adrian turned down the Castillo heiress for this ordinary woman."

Adrian frowned and said, "Keep the muzzle farther away next time."

He pulled me to my feet. "I thought a few drills would teach you to protect yourself. Instead, you still just stood there waiting to get shot."

He closed my coat around me, then noticed my necklace was missing. "They took the necklace too?"

He had given me the necklace after the first drill, when someone put a knife to my waist in an underground garage and stole my phone.

To keep my identity hidden, I pretended to be terrified. My hands were still shaking when Adrian arrived.

He looked even more shaken than I did.

He held me and checked me over again and again, then had a doctor examine me too.

Then he took out the necklace and fastened it around my neck himself. "This is to make up for it. Once you're used to living in my world, I won't have to worry about you anymore."

I thought he truly cared about me, so I went along with every staged robbery.

The second time, Chloe had people steal my car keys in a parking garage.

The fifth time, two men dragged me into an alley with no cameras, and one of them slashed my arm with a knife.

The ninth time, I woke in the middle of the night and saw a strange man sitting at the edge of my bed.

When Chloe and the rest showed up in my room again to settle their bets, I finally lost my temper and ignored Adrian's calls for two days.

He showed up with flowers to make peace. He said Chloe's father had died saving his father and was considered a benefactor of the Family. They raised Chloe like their own. Adrian believed he had a duty to look after her. He also promised he'd given her a warning.

I respected him for honoring the man who saved his father, so I stayed.

But the next month, another drill came right on schedule. Chloe laughed just as hard as before.

At first, I had been testing whether Adrian would protect a girlfriend with no powerful connections.

Then I realized these weren't drills at all. They were ambushes. No one ever taught me how to defend myself. They only wanted to laugh at my expense.

So I waited to see how long Adrian would keep letting Chloe get away with it.

After twelve drills, I had my answer. He would never stop her.

Vito stared at me and suddenly sneered. "You think you've won?"The next second, he drew a gun from behind his back and aimed it at me. "Nobody move! Your father loves you more than anything, doesn't he? Sign the agreement, or I'll put a bullet in your arm!"I was not afraid. I was wearing the best body armor available. But Adrian lunged forward and shoved me aside. The gun fired. The bullet tore into his chest, and blood sprayed across my clothes.Adrian staggered back two steps and collapsed.Vito was tackled, the gun was kicked out of reach, and the warehouse was secured.I crouched beside Adrian as blood poured from his chest.I pressed down on the wound. "Don't talk."But he grabbed my wrist. "Evelyn, I'm sorry. Everything that happened before was my fault."The first time I faced real gunfire, he had stepped in front of me too. That was when I fell in love with him. Now, for the last time, he had done it again. But this time, there would be no starting over. After Adrian died, Vi

The man who proposed abducting me was Vito Romano, one of the Morettis' longest-serving elders. After we withdrew their support, the businesses under his control suffered the heaviest losses. He believed that forcing me to restore the marriage arrangement would solve the Morettis' problems.I let it be known that I would meet a business associate at the port that evening.Sure enough, Vito's men appeared. My car had barely entered the port when a truck swerved in front of me. Two gunshots followed, blowing out my front tires.Men closed in from both sides at once.I was taken to a warehouse beside the port.A thick contract lay on the table, and a man pushed a pen toward me. "Sign it, and you can go home tonight."I flipped through the pages.First, my arranged marriage to Adrian would be reinstated.Second, the Castillos would restore all the support they had withdrawn from the Morettis.Third, I would personally announce that the two families had merely had a private disagreement and

I looked at him. "Yes."One word. His expression went blank in an instant.I wasn't lying to him.The first time I faced real gunfire, he stepped in front of me.After the first drill, he held me, comforted me, and fastened that necklace around my neck.Back then, I was already looking for a chance to tell him who I really was.But by the twelfth drill, they had fired a live round that grazed my ear and were still betting on how long it would take me to cry.He could have had me, and the Morettis could have had everything they had spent more than half a year begging for. Now, they had lost it all.My father stood. "See them out."Adrian stood too.He tried to approach me, but the guards stopped him.I did not look back. Behind me, my father's cold voice ended the conversation. "Mr. Moretti, please leave."Chloe did not lie low after being thrown out of the Moretti estate. She contacted several social-media accounts and released edited versions of all twelve drill videos. She made herse

On the day of the meeting, Adrian and Salvatore came to the Castillo estate in person. The Morettis offered the revenue from the same two ports if the Castillos would restore even part of their support. My father leaned back and idly flipped through the documents. "Mr. Moretti, we protected you because of the marriage alliance. That marriage is off. What is left to discuss?"Salvatore was visibly struggling to contain his anger, but he lowered his gaze. "We respect Ms. Castillo's decision. We aren't here to ask her to reconsider the marriage. We are under considerable pressure, and we'd like to discuss a possible partnership."Adrian sat on the other side of the table. His eyes were bloodshot with dark circles beneath them, and he looked haggard. In the past, he would never have let himself appear at a negotiating table in that state. My father glanced at him. "I hear you've been refusing to meet my daughter."Adrian was quiet for a moment. "I already have someone I love."My father di

Once the Castillos' protection was gone, the other families began carving up Moretti territory. The next day, a shipment worth tens of millions was seized at the port.On the third day, two small families that had depended on the Morettis switched sides. On the fifth day, the financier who had kept the Morettis afloat abruptly cut ties with them.Within a week, the Morettis' already struggling businesses suffered one setback after another.Salvatore slammed a stack of documents down in front of Adrian. "I warned you long ago that we needed the Castillos' power."Of course Adrian knew about the proposed marriage alliance.Over the previous six months, Salvatore had repeatedly urged him to meet the Castillo heiress. But by then, he was already with me.Every time Salvatore brought it up, Adrian had only one answer. "I already have Evelyn. She's the only one I love."Even now, he did not know what the Castillo heiress looked like.Salvatore's face turned livid. "Wonderful. They've rejecte

Back at the Castillo estate, a doctor treated the wound on my forehead while my father seethed. "The Morettis did all of this?"I nodded and handed him my phone. There had been twelve drills, escalating from a stolen phone to a live round grazing my ear. People had placed bets under every video. My father read through everything and slammed the phone down on the table. "They like games, do they? Then we'll play their game."I smiled, and my father and I discussed our next move. That same day, we formally ended the marriage arrangement. We revoked the Morettis' access to the shipping routes we had promised them and recalled every man we had sent to help defend their territory. My father also called several families with grudges against the Morettis. "From now on, I will stay out of Moretti affairs."With those words, he removed the last shield protecting the Morettis. My father looked at me. "Whatever they did to you, I'll make them pay for all of it."Meanwhile, after failing to find m
