Chapter 2

Yasmine
Chloe walked over and held her screen out to him. "Do you want to see the replay? I told you she'd be scared witless this time!"

Adrian said nothing. She pouted and said, "All right, I get it. You feel sorry for her again."

She took Adrian's arm and turned to me. "Evelyn, don't blame him for having standards. Bad people won't go easy on you because you're pretty. Not everyone knows how to dodge a bullet like I do."

Adrian looked at me, his voice thick with disappointment. "It's been a year and you haven't improved in the slightest! If only you were half as capable as Chloe. I honestly doubt you're fit to be my wife."

The group joined in. "Adrian is going to marry her? We aren't getting a lady of the house. We're taking on dead weight."

"Only Ms. Castillo is fit to become his wife."

Hearing them mock me while praising the woman I really was, I suddenly knew it was time to let go.

My knee was still bleeding, and the pain kept my head clear. "There's no need to arrange anything else. There won't be a thirteenth drill."

Adrian frowned at this. Chloe laughed at once. "Please, Evelyn. You aren't going to make a scene because Adrian said a few harsh words."

"I'm not talking to you. Adrian, we're finished."

I was Evelyn Castillo, the Castillo heiress.

I was the one who had sought Adrian out in the first place.

At the time, the Morettis were under pressure from rival families. They approached my family more than a dozen times and offered control of two docks if my father would consider marrying me into their family.

Through the alliance, they hoped to use the Castillos' power to keep the other families in check and secure their territory in Sicily.

So this marriage was never theirs to decide.

My father loved me dearly, so he chose to respect my wishes.

I kept a low profile and rarely appeared in public, so no one knew who I really was.

I asked my father for some time so I could see for myself what my future husband, Adrian Moretti, was really like.

My plan was simple. I dropped the Castillo name and pretended to be an ordinary woman.

Using only my first name, Evelyn, I took a job at a gallery in Manhattan.

I first met Adrian at a charity dinner, where I deliberately spilled champagne on his sleeve.

He glanced at his damp clothes but did not lose his temper. He asked, "Is this your first time at an event like this?"

I nodded nervously.

Chloe later told me Adrian had never met a woman like me, someone as timid and vulnerable as a rabbit among wolves. To him, the novelty was the entire appeal.

For the next two weeks, he came to the gallery every day to talk to me, waited until I finished work, and drove me home.

Two months later, three shots went off across the street. He shielded me with his body until the shooter was gone.

That night, he sat on the edge of my bed and told me, "Life with a man like me won't be peaceful."

I nearly told him who I was that night, but stopped myself. Protecting me from a bullet proved his love was real, but real love could still change overnight.

I wanted to know whether he would still choose an ordinary woman who could give him nothing once the novelty wore off.

Not long after we started seeing each other, Adrian had Chloe arrange the first robbery drill to teach me how to protect myself.

Then last night, I heard him say to Chloe, "You're in a bad mood. Let's move the robbery drill up to tomorrow. Watching Evelyn will cheer you up."

I listened as they frantically placed bets on the rescheduled drill and discussed having me thrown into the ocean for Chloe's next drill.

For the first time, I realized how ridiculous the past year had been. They were using my fear for entertainment, betting on how long it would take me to panic. And Adrian stood by and never once tried to stop them.

So I called my father.

"Dad, turn the Morettis down for me, and find out which families are moving against them right now."

Vito stared at me and suddenly sneered. "You think you've won?"The next second, he drew a gun from behind his back and aimed it at me. "Nobody move! Your father loves you more than anything, doesn't he? Sign the agreement, or I'll put a bullet in your arm!"I was not afraid. I was wearing the best body armor available. But Adrian lunged forward and shoved me aside. The gun fired. The bullet tore into his chest, and blood sprayed across my clothes.Adrian staggered back two steps and collapsed.Vito was tackled, the gun was kicked out of reach, and the warehouse was secured.I crouched beside Adrian as blood poured from his chest.I pressed down on the wound. "Don't talk."But he grabbed my wrist. "Evelyn, I'm sorry. Everything that happened before was my fault."The first time I faced real gunfire, he had stepped in front of me too. That was when I fell in love with him. Now, for the last time, he had done it again. But this time, there would be no starting over. After Adrian died, Vi

The man who proposed abducting me was Vito Romano, one of the Morettis' longest-serving elders. After we withdrew their support, the businesses under his control suffered the heaviest losses. He believed that forcing me to restore the marriage arrangement would solve the Morettis' problems.I let it be known that I would meet a business associate at the port that evening.Sure enough, Vito's men appeared. My car had barely entered the port when a truck swerved in front of me. Two gunshots followed, blowing out my front tires.Men closed in from both sides at once.I was taken to a warehouse beside the port.A thick contract lay on the table, and a man pushed a pen toward me. "Sign it, and you can go home tonight."I flipped through the pages.First, my arranged marriage to Adrian would be reinstated.Second, the Castillos would restore all the support they had withdrawn from the Morettis.Third, I would personally announce that the two families had merely had a private disagreement and

I looked at him. "Yes."One word. His expression went blank in an instant.I wasn't lying to him.The first time I faced real gunfire, he stepped in front of me.After the first drill, he held me, comforted me, and fastened that necklace around my neck.Back then, I was already looking for a chance to tell him who I really was.But by the twelfth drill, they had fired a live round that grazed my ear and were still betting on how long it would take me to cry.He could have had me, and the Morettis could have had everything they had spent more than half a year begging for. Now, they had lost it all.My father stood. "See them out."Adrian stood too.He tried to approach me, but the guards stopped him.I did not look back. Behind me, my father's cold voice ended the conversation. "Mr. Moretti, please leave."Chloe did not lie low after being thrown out of the Moretti estate. She contacted several social-media accounts and released edited versions of all twelve drill videos. She made herse

On the day of the meeting, Adrian and Salvatore came to the Castillo estate in person. The Morettis offered the revenue from the same two ports if the Castillos would restore even part of their support. My father leaned back and idly flipped through the documents. "Mr. Moretti, we protected you because of the marriage alliance. That marriage is off. What is left to discuss?"Salvatore was visibly struggling to contain his anger, but he lowered his gaze. "We respect Ms. Castillo's decision. We aren't here to ask her to reconsider the marriage. We are under considerable pressure, and we'd like to discuss a possible partnership."Adrian sat on the other side of the table. His eyes were bloodshot with dark circles beneath them, and he looked haggard. In the past, he would never have let himself appear at a negotiating table in that state. My father glanced at him. "I hear you've been refusing to meet my daughter."Adrian was quiet for a moment. "I already have someone I love."My father di

Once the Castillos' protection was gone, the other families began carving up Moretti territory. The next day, a shipment worth tens of millions was seized at the port.On the third day, two small families that had depended on the Morettis switched sides. On the fifth day, the financier who had kept the Morettis afloat abruptly cut ties with them.Within a week, the Morettis' already struggling businesses suffered one setback after another.Salvatore slammed a stack of documents down in front of Adrian. "I warned you long ago that we needed the Castillos' power."Of course Adrian knew about the proposed marriage alliance.Over the previous six months, Salvatore had repeatedly urged him to meet the Castillo heiress. But by then, he was already with me.Every time Salvatore brought it up, Adrian had only one answer. "I already have Evelyn. She's the only one I love."Even now, he did not know what the Castillo heiress looked like.Salvatore's face turned livid. "Wonderful. They've rejecte

Back at the Castillo estate, a doctor treated the wound on my forehead while my father seethed. "The Morettis did all of this?"I nodded and handed him my phone. There had been twelve drills, escalating from a stolen phone to a live round grazing my ear. People had placed bets under every video. My father read through everything and slammed the phone down on the table. "They like games, do they? Then we'll play their game."I smiled, and my father and I discussed our next move. That same day, we formally ended the marriage arrangement. We revoked the Morettis' access to the shipping routes we had promised them and recalled every man we had sent to help defend their territory. My father also called several families with grudges against the Morettis. "From now on, I will stay out of Moretti affairs."With those words, he removed the last shield protecting the Morettis. My father looked at me. "Whatever they did to you, I'll make them pay for all of it."Meanwhile, after failing to find m
