Chapter 7

Author: Eira Winters
Adrian's POV

"The mistakes of the previous generation aren't Ethan's fault."

Ethan kept his head lowered, sobbing silently.

Claire stepped forward and wiped his tears before turning toward me.

"Adrian, you've gone too far! Besides, it's just a watch. Ethan, let's give it back to him."

She yanked the watch off Ethan's wrist and hurled it to the floor.

"Come on. I'll take you to buy a better and more expensive watch right now."

Vanessa glanced at me and sighed.

"Adrian, why do you always have to be so childish? Why do you have to make a scene? Ethan's had a hard life. He's been through so much, and you're still being so mean to him. You're a grown man. Why can't you be a little more generous?

"And about the design sketches… Adrian, you've already been given so much. You'll have plenty of chances to win major awards in the future. But Ethan's situation is different. He needs this award to build his reputation and establish himself in the industry. That's the only way the Lawson family will slowly come to accept him."

Among elite families, social status still mattered. If one didn't come from a noble family, they needed to have an impeccable reputation and undeniable achievements. Since Ethan couldn't change his background, he could only rely on boosting his honor.

Vanessa reached out as if to help me up. "Adrian…"

"Move."

I slapped her hand away and suddenly laughed.

"Vanessa."

This was the last time I would ever acknowledge her as my sister. This was the last time I would ever look at her this carefully.

"You'll regret this one day."

Her brows furrowed. She couldn't look me in the eyes as she spoke. "Adrian, I'll make it up to you someday."

Then, she turned and hurried after Claire and Ethan.

I crouched down and picked up the watch and bracelet. The bracelet was fine. Thankfully, the watch was of high quality and hadn't broken, though there was a small scratch on its surface.

I pressed the watch tightly against my chest and stayed there for a long time.

I didn't cry. I couldn't even shed a single tear. Only the crushing pain in my chest remained, growing sharper before gradually turning numb.

It turned out that when grief reached its limit, a person couldn't shed a single tear.

The sun finally set, painting everything below in a crimson glow.

The weather forecast said temperatures would rise over the next few days. The air was dry; even the smallest spark could start a fire.

Adrian's POVOnce I got back to work, I threw myself into it.After winning such a prestigious award, my salary increased considerably, and my workload grew heavier than before. On my second day back at work, Vanessa moved out of the apartment next door and returned to Jinton. The apartment remained vacant for a while.A year later, a young woman moved in. Her name was Yvette Langdon, and she was a cheerful, outgoing girl who came from the same hometown as me.As I got to know her better, I learned that she worked in the area too. Our companies weren't far apart, and we kept similar working hours, so we often ran into each other.A few months later, she made it clear that she admired me. I thought it over for two days before officially asking her to be my girlfriend. She was easy to get along with, and we had plenty in common. I genuinely enjoyed spending time with her.…Another two years passed. During Thanksgiving, I learned from Vanessa that Karen had passed away the pr

  • My Fiancée, My Sister, and the Pauper   Chapter 23

Adrian's POVI was already back in the country before Mom's death anniversary. On the day of the anniversary, Vanessa was waiting for me in the hotel lobby to take me to the cemetery. We parked outside the cemetery, then walked to Mom's grave together. Vanessa had brought a large bouquet of flowers, as though she were trying to make up for everything she'd missed two years ago.Mom's smile on the headstone was as warm and gentle as ever. The breeze stirred the loose strands of hair across my forehead. Holding my trophy, I chatted with Mom about this and that, telling her everything that had happened.Vanessa stood off to the side, silent throughout. When it was time to leave, I still couldn't stop my eyes from welling up with tears."Adrian," Vanessa began, her eyes red. "Will you never forgive Claire and me, no matter what we do?"I wiped away the tears before they could spill over. "I can forgive you both," I said evenly. "Just don't ever come into my life again."I woul

  • My Fiancée, My Sister, and the Pauper   Chapter 22

Adrian's POVAfter that day, Claire stopped showing up, and I relished the peace and quiet. I spent most of my time preparing for the design competition and worked on my design drafts whenever I was free. After the second round, I submitted my design for the semifinals as well.Five days flew by, and I received word that I'd qualified for the finals. To celebrate, I invited Linda and a few of my colleagues over for dinner. While I was preparing food in the kitchen, Vanessa rang the doorbell. The moment I opened the door, she handed me a box. "I bought this from an upscale restaurant," she said. "They're all your favorite dishes—""I've told you before. I don't need any of this," I cut her off. "Stop wasting your time."Vanessa's smile faded. "Adrian, does that mean you will never forgive me, no matter what I do?""I'm moving on," I said. "I hope you can do the same."Vanessa fell silent for a moment before speaking again. "Are you going back next month for Mom's deat

  • My Fiancée, My Sister, and the Pauper   Chapter 21

Adrian's POVWhen Claire's men brought Ethan and his mother to me, I could hardly recognize the woman standing in front of me as Karen. She wore dark clothes and no makeup. Fine lines creased the corners of her eyes, and gray streaked her temples, making her look like she was in her 60s or even her 70s. Ethan looked just as haggard, his youthful energy and vitality long gone. They'd been reduced to this in less than two years. Clearly, they'd been through a great deal.I had to admit, seeing them in such a state gave me a sense of satisfaction. Yet even as I savored that satisfaction, a deep sadness crept in.Claire and Vanessa had once treated Ethan so well. Vanessa had shown Karen such respect, too. Back then, I'd suffered one injustice after another because the two of them always defended Ethan and took his side. Yet after I left, they had quickly turned their anger on him and Karen instead.Their affections and resentments had always been so fickle.I admitted that I loathe

  • My Fiancée, My Sister, and the Pauper   Chapter 20

Adrian's POVJust before boarding, something went wrong with my ticket, and I couldn't get on the flight.I wasn't surprised. I knew Claire well enough to know she wouldn't just let me leave without putting up a fight.I told Linda and the other two coworkers to go on without me while I stayed behind to deal with it.I wheeled my suitcase through the terminal, looked around, and spotted Claire almost immediately. There was still a chill in the early spring air. She wore a camel-colored coat, her long, wavy hair falling loosely over her shoulders. With her striking features and curvy figure, she was hard to miss in the crowd. She was watching me expectantly. I beckoned her over with a finger. Her face lit up, and she hurried toward me. "Adrian.""You had something to do with my ticket." It was a statement, not a question.Claire didn't bother denying it. "I did. I couldn't just let you leave."I stared at her coldly. "Do you know why I left? Because you and Vanessa Bennett are

  • My Fiancée, My Sister, and the Pauper   Chapter 19

Adrian's POVI called the police. It had been a long time since I'd last seen Claire. Gone was the confident, lively woman I remembered. Now, she looked completely worn down.I'd figured that once I was out of the picture, she'd be upset for a few days before going back to enjoying her life with Ethan.Apparently, I'd meant more to her than I'd realized. Not that it mattered to me anymore. The police arrived shortly after."This woman keeps insisting I'm someone else, and she won't leave me alone," I explained.I gave them a helpless look and showed them my ID. "My name is Ryan Foster. It always has been.""No, you're Adrian! You're not Ryan or whatever you're calling yourself. We grew up together. I'd know you anywhere!" Even after looking at my ID, Claire refused to believe me."Do you have any proof?" I asked.Claire had no answer.I knew she didn't have a single photo of me. I'd even gone to her mother's house myself to get back all our childhood photos. Before I left, I
