Chapter 1

The second the call ended, Harper hurriedly pushed open the bedroom door.

"Adrian, did I do something wrong? Why did you sell the self-portraits I painted for you?" Her voice trembled, and hurt filled her expression.

Her gaze fell on the several paintings she had bought back over the past few days.

I didn't respond. I simply watched her in silence.

Every time Harper cheated on me, she painted a self-portrait for me with her own hands. Including the one she had painted three days ago on our wedding anniversary, which still hadn't been framed, there were 13 paintings in total.

I let out a quiet laugh.

I used to treasure those paintings more than anything. I thought they were Harper's way of expressing her love for me. After all, she was one of the world's most acclaimed painters.

But now I finally knew the truth. They were nothing more than a way for her to ease the guilt she felt after cheating on me.

"I just thought they were getting a little old."

I kept my expression perfectly composed, but Harper's brows remained tightly furrowed. She threw herself into my arms. "Adrian, are you really okay?"

When I nodded, Harper finally breathed a sigh of relief and spoke tenderly. "Adrian, don't worry. No matter how much the world changes, I'll always love you just the way I do now."

I listened to those ridiculous words and calmly curled my lips into a faint smile without answering.

Harper didn't press the subject. Instead, she tied an apron around her waist.

Just like that, she went back to being the devoted fiancée who commanded attention wherever she went yet came home and happily cooked for her fiancé.

But before the first dish could even hit the pan, her phone started ringing.

I watched her move around the kitchen and deliberately raised my voice. "Harper, someone's calling you."

"Can you get it for me?" she answered without hesitation.

I raised an eyebrow, glanced at the caller ID labeled "Assistant," and swiped to answer.

The moment the call connected, an unfamiliar man's voice came through the phone. "Babe, I miss you so much. When are you coming to see me?"

At the same time, Harper rushed out of the kitchen with a spatula still in her hand.

She seemed to realize her reaction had been far too frantic because she quickly gave me an uneasy smile. "I just wanted to see if it was something important from the studio."

I watched her scramble to cover herself and calmly handed her the phone. "The call had just connected. He hadn't said anything yet."

She snatched the phone from me. The moment she saw the caller ID, the panic and guilt on her face became even more obvious.

She quickly hung up. "Adrian, you really didn't hear anything?"

I shook my head. "If you're busy with work, I'll just grab something to eat myself. Go ahead and take care of it."

Those words were exactly what she wanted to hear.

Harper nodded and stepped forward to hug me. "Something came up at the studio. I'll take care of it and come right back. Eat without me."

I didn't expose her lie.

She hadn't even heard what the caller wanted, yet she already knew something had come up at the studio.

I looked at her and nodded again.

The moment the door closed behind her, rain began pouring down without warning.

A new message appeared on my phone.

[Mr. Parsons, even though you're getting married, Harper will still rush out into a downpour just because I asked her to come see me, leaving you all alone at home.]

At that moment, my heart finally died.

Harper's choice had already given me the answer. She had shown me exactly what was in her heart.

I stood, opened my contacts, typed a message, and sent it.

[Seven days from now, help me fake my death and disappear. I've already decided how I'm going to die.]

Seven days from now would be my wedding day. It would also be the day I left for good.

With every word Dylan spoke, more color drained from Harper's face. "You said you loved Adrian, yet you were willing to sleep with me. You said you loved Adrian, yet you went sightseeing with me when you were supposed to be preparing for your wedding."Harper, you keep saying you loved Adrian, but everything you did hurt him. And if you loved him so much, why weren't you willing to go with him? What? Were you afraid that even in the afterlife, he wouldn't want to see you?"Dylan's body trembled. His voice sounded unhinged, yet a trace of wounded grievance still lingered beneath it. "I had a life of my own. You were the one who noticed me first. You were the one who slept with me, and you were the one who told me you loved me."You gave me the confidence to provoke Adrian again and again. You couldn't control yourself, and now you want to blame his death entirely on me!"The more Dylan spoke, the harder he laughed. "Harper, you're pathetic!"Harper could no longer hold herself back

Dylan's eyes settled on Adrian's photograph with open resentment. Two seconds later, as if that wasn't enough to vent his anger, he reached out and knocked over the wedding portrait of Harper and Adrian. The sound of shattering glass rang through the room.Harper came downstairs at that exact moment. As soon as she saw our shattered wedding portrait on the floor, she quickened her pace. She strode over and slapped Dylan across the face. His head snapped to the side from the impact, and his expression instantly turned wounded."Harper, how could you hit me?" His tone was as fake and pitiful as ever.Harper no longer had the patience for it, much less the fondness she'd once had for his act. "I asked you here because I want to talk about what our relationship is going to be from now on."The moment she finished speaking, the tenderness vanished from Dylan's face.He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her. "Harper, I never asked you to give me a title. You know that. I j

Harper didn't even spare Dylan a glance as he sat crumpled on the floor. She rushed down the stairs from the second floor, moving faster with every step. "Adrian! My Adrian is back!"The moment she opened the door, all she found was a delivery driver standing outside. The excitement vanished from her face. Then she noticed the package in his hands. Her name was listed as the recipient, and a smile slowly returned to her lips. "Adrian sent you, didn't he?"The delivery driver had no idea what she was talking about. He could only shake his head awkwardly. "I'm sorry, ma'am. There's no sender information on the package, so I don't know who sent it either."For once, Harper didn't give him a hard time. She hurriedly took the package inside, too impatient to wait before opening it.The moment she lifted the lid, she froze. Inside were photographs of her and Dylan together. Some showed the two of them watching the sunrise and sunset while she was supposed to be preparing for her weddin

The moment seawater splashed into the air, Dylan appeared behind Harper with a bouquet in his hands. "Harper, what are you looking at?"He clearly hadn't seen Adrian jump into the ocean. As usual, he casually draped an arm around her shoulders, but Harper shoved him away the next second. "What are you all standing around for? Get down there and save him!"Harper kicked off her high heels and prepared to jump into the water.Dylan froze in shock and grabbed her tightly."Harper, what are you doing?!" His eyes widened in disbelief. At the same time, the bodyguards climbed into the small boats one after another.Five minutes later, one of them shouted, "Miss Turner! We found him—"The roar of the waves drowned out the rest of his words.Harper hurried forward and looked toward the boat. The relief that had just appeared on her face vanished when she saw what they had pulled from the water. It was Adrian's suit jacket."Harper, don't panic. Maybe Mr. Parsons is still alive..."

Our wedding was set to take place aboard a luxury cruise ship at sea.Harper wrapped her arms around my waist, clearly pleased with herself. "I know how much you love the ocean, so I chose this. You won't be mad, will you?"I smiled and shook my head. "I'm happy."While I waited in the dressing room in my suit for her to finish getting ready, Dylan couldn't sit still. He messaged me again.[Mr. Parsons, what do you think will happen if I show up at the wedding later? Will Harper still choose you?][Why don't I tell you something? Last night, Harper and I spent the night together in the very room where you two are supposed to spend your wedding night.][She doesn't love you at all. What's the point of clinging to the title of her husband? Why don't you just give it to me?]His messages were arrogant, and they openly revealed his ambition and desire.I didn't blame him. I knew he could only provoke me so brazenly because Harper had encouraged and indulged him.I looked at Harper
