JAX

I couldn't remember the last time I sat in the back of a squad car. Usually, a rookie brings me in, the senior officers yell at them, and I walk right out.

I was just waiting for this handsome officer to get chewed out so I could leave. Next time he saw me, he’d know better.

He drove in silence, the cruiser filled with a heavy, suffocating heat. When we finally pulled up to the bright station building, his phone rang.

He stared at the caller ID, a deep frown cutting across his forehead. Curious, I leaned forward, trying to peek over his broad shoulder to see the name.

A heavy hand shoved my chest back against the seat.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" he muttered, disconnecting the call and shoving the phone into his pocket. He grabbed my arm and yanked me out of the car. "Kids these days."

Tsk. What’s wrong with a little peek?

We walked into the loud, busy precinct. The second we stepped through the doors, every officer at their desks immediately stood up and saluted.

Wait... what? Were they saluting him?

He just waved a hand, telling them to sit down. I felt their eyes burning into me. Some looked thrilled that I finally got caught by a cop I couldn't bribe. Others just looked at me with pity.

I dragged my feet as he pulled me into a large, private office. My eyes immediately dropped to the heavy nameplate on the desk.

Officer Marcus Grant - Deputy Chief of Police.

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. Thank God. I thought he was the new Sheriff. If he was, I’d actually be in trouble.

He shoved a piece of paper and a pen across the desk.

"Start writing," he ordered, his voice cold.

I tilted my head, blinking up at him. "Writing what? Don't tell me... a statement?"

"What else are you going to write? An essay?"

My jaw tightened. I would have punched that pretty smirk right off his face if my hands weren't still locked behind my back. But hitting a Deputy Chief would get me thrown in a cell faster than my father could wire the bail money.

Before I could argue about writing with cuffed hands, the office door burst open. An older man with grey hair rushed in.

Officer Grant immediately stood straight and saluted.

But the older man ignored him completely. He rushed straight over to me.

"Oh my, Jaxon. Are you okay?" the Sheriff asked, his voice shaking a little.

Of course he cared. My father paid him double his salary just to make sure I never saw the inside of a cell. This was him doing his job.

The Sheriff turned slowly to Officer Grant, his face red with anger. "Unlock his cuffs. Immediately!"

Officer Grant froze. His dark brows pulled together, and his jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth would shatter. He wanted to argue. I could see the rage burning in his grey eyes, but he couldn't disobey a direct order.

Slowly, he walked around the desk. I lifted my chin, holding his furious gaze as I turned my back to him, offering my locked hands.

He grabbed the cuffs. His hot, thick fingers brushed against my skin, sending a violent shiver down my spine as the metal clicked open.

I brought my hands forward, rubbing them with a dramatic pout as I looked at the Sheriff. "Oh my, my wrists are already red."

"Forgive him, Jax," the Sheriff practically begged, wiping sweat from his forehead. "He only transferred here a few days ago. He doesn't know how things work yet."

"Oh, don't worry about it, Sheriff," I purred, waving my hand dismissively. A hot rush of pride swelled in my chest. I turned back to Officer Grant, reaching out to slowly brush some invisible dust off his broad, tense shoulder. "He’s just doing his job."

"Haha," the Sheriff forced a nervous laugh. "I'll have someone drive you home."

"Don't worry about it." I finally pulled my eyes away from the furious, gorgeous Deputy and headed for the door. "I need to get back to school."

"Is that so? Have a good night then!" the Sheriff called out.

I didn't even look back, even though my body was screaming at me to turn around just to see the helpless rage on Marcus's face one more time.

I grabbed a cab back to campus. Thankfully, the party was already over, due to what had happened earlier. Jeremy and the guys were busy clearing the field.

"Oh, fuck!" Jeremy yelled, dropping a cooler and running toward me. "I thought you were spending the night in a cell!"

"There is no way in hell that will ever happen," I smirked, glancing around. "Where's the injured kid?"

"He's fine. The ambulance took him for stitches right after you left," Jeremy said. Then, his face darkened, and he leaned in close. "You are not going to fucking believe who called the cops on us."

I raised an eyebrow. "Who?"

"The new transfer student. The one with the glasses? Remember him?"

"Ha!" I slapped a hand over my mouth, a wild grin breaking across my face. No fucking way. That little nerd was a snitch? I basically saved his life this morning, and he called the cops on us?

"Why don't we go fuck him up?" Jeremy growled, cracking his knuckles. He was pissed about his ruined party. "I know you hate bullying, but this is my fight. Three or four punches to the gut will teach him."

My stomach dropped. If Jeremy actually hit him, the weak little nerd would probably die. I couldn't let Jeremy go to jail for murder. His strict father would let him rot in there to learn his lesson.

"Why don't I handle him myself?" I asked, coldly.

Jeremy blinked. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to get close to him. Play with him a little. And then... dump him."

"You're going to date a guy?" Jeremy frowned, stepping back. "Have you forgotten what happened with the last one?"

A sharp ache hit my chest. I bit the inside of my cheek hard. Thanks, Jeremy, for bringing up the one memory I spent years trying to bury.

"I never said I was dating him," I snapped, forcing my smirk back in place. "I'm going to become his buddy. Find out his deepest, nastiest secret, and drop it on the whole school. I’ll make him a complete outcast."

Jeremy raised an eyebrow. He clearly still wanted to punch the kid, but he had no idea I was literally saving the nerd's life right now. And also his life.

And honestly? It was the perfect revenge. He was the reason I got cuffed today. I was going to ruin his college life before it even started.

"Fine," Jeremy shrugged. "Do it."

"I wasn't even asking for permission."

I pulled out my phone, stepped away, and dialed my butler.

"Good evening, Young Master. Is something the matter?" the old man’s stern voice came through the speaker.

"I need you to look into some people for me."

"Anything you say, Young Master."

"Deputy Chief Marcus Grant and his golden-haired, nerdy son. I want everything on them by morning."

"Understood." A sharp beep ended the call.

I tapped my phone against my jaw, a dark, excited grin stretching across my face.

This was going to be so much fun. Oh, how I loved school.

JAXI cleared my throat, loud and harsh. Both Aunt Millicent and Marcus snapped their attention to me."Who were you here for again, Officer Grant?" I asked, crossing my arms.Marcus blinked, looking a bit lost for a second before he seemed to remember himself. He stepped away from my aunt and closed the distance between us."I came to thank you," he said, his deep voice rumbling. He reached out, his heavy hand clamping down firmly on my shoulder. "For finding Eugene last night. I apologize for being out of line with you."My eyes dropped to the large, rough hand gripping my shoulder. A violent jolt of heat shot straight down to my stomach. By making my life an absolute hell. She destroyed my school projects. She threw away my lunch. He told my father, and my father didn't hesitate. He packed her bags and shipped her off to my older aunt’s house. She did all of that just to prove my father loved her more, but she was dead wrong. And now, years later, she was coming back."You handle the welcoming," I growled, storming past the butler in the hallway. JAXI killed time until seven o’clock. My phone buzzed non-stop on the passenger seat... dozens of texts and missed calls from Eugene. I ignored every single one.I knew this completely ruined my plan of becoming his best buddy, but there was no way I was going to sit in a boring library. Not when I had the perfect excuse to show up at his house and see his hot father again.Just the memory of Marcus’s heavy, rough hands on me made my jeans feel way too tight. A low groan tore from my throat. I ran a hand through my silver hair, gripped the steering wheel, and sped toward the quiet, boring neighborhood where the Grants lived.I parked my green sports car two blocks away, stepping out into the cool night air. I adjusted my jacket, a cocky smirk pulling at my lips as I walked up the driveway to their red front door. I couldn't wait to see the look on Eugene’s face when I pushed my way inside.I pressed the doorbell. The lock clicked and the door swung open."It's way past your curfew, b

He stayed with his mother until she remarried and popped out a whole new set of kids for her new husband. Feeling replaced, Eugene packed his bags after high school and moved in with his dad. Which meant the golden-haired boy and the stern officer barely knew each other. They were practically strangers living under the same roof.I swiped past Eugene's boring school records and got to the good part. My dear Marcus Grant. He was forty-two. Just twenty years older than me? A hot thrill shot straight down my spine.
