Merek crossed the hall and slapped me. The blow turned my face towards Grandmother. She stepped between us before he could raise his hand again.
“You will not strike her in front of me,” Grandmother warned.
“She accused Monica of destroying this family,” Merek replied. “She frightened Dagan at the river and turned a public apology into another attack.”
“I was trying to escape,” I replied, tasting blood. “Not everything I do is meant to control you.”
Merek had once been my gentlest father. I spent my childhood in his treatment room, learning herbs while resting beneath his table in Kiro’s form. When my inner wolf feared our first shift, Merek spoke through our bond until she took control.
“Your wolf will always protect you,” he promised that day. “I will never let anyone damage your bond.”
He broke that promise after Monica’s awakening. Monica claimed Kiro had deliberately driven her white wolf into a rage and attacked the injured cubs. Merek accepted her story even though the awakening wards had prevented me from shifting.
Guards held me while he burned moon-silver seals around my mark. The seals damaged the path between my human and beast halves until I could no longer shift.
Merek had called it a temporary restraint and promised the marks would fade within days. Kiro cried for him inside my mind while he placed them. He heard her but believed Monica’s warning that my wolf was trying to deceive him. When the seals failed to fade, he accepted Black Hollow’s report that I was pretending they still hurt.
Now Monica hurried towards him and loosely held his arm. “Please do not hit Rhea again,” she begged. “If she confesses, I will forgive her.”
The guests praised her kindness. Merek faced me. “Kneel and confess. I will treat your wounds and repair your bond with Kiro.”
He still spoke as if three years of damage could be treated with a tonic. “What happens if I refuse?” I asked.
Dagan answered from behind me. “You will return to Black Hollow’s surface wing tonight and remain under observation until you are willing to tell the truth. I will order the warden to keep you away from the mine.”
He believed his order would protect me. I knew Monica’s silver carried more weight inside Black Hollow than any instruction he sent.
“She will not return anywhere tonight,” Grandmother declared. “Rhea will stay in my rooms until I learn what all of you have hidden from me.”
The four men fell silent. Monica’s fingers tightened around Merek’s sleeve. If Grandmother began asking questions, the lie surrounding Black Hollow would not survive.
Merek opened his healer’s case. Bottles for fever and broken bones stood beside a black vial sealed with silver wax. I recognised concentrated wolfsbane.
Small doses calmed Beast Rage. Swallowed alone, it stopped a beast core within minutes. Dagan blocked the doors while two guards moved behind me. They would force my confession or return me to the place that had nearly destroyed Kiro and me.
“Drink this tonic,” Merek ordered, reaching for my arm. “Then you will kneel.”
I knocked the tonic away and seized the black vial. Merek’s expression changed. “Put that down, Rhea. That is not ordinary medicine.”
Monica remained outside my reach. “Please listen to him,” she said. “We only want to help.”
They wanted obedience, not my life. Kiro moved weakly inside my mind. “Do not leave me,” she pleaded. Her voice almost stopped me, but Dagan signalled the guards to surround me.
“You will never have my confession,” I told them. “I would rather die with the truth than live inside Monica’s lie.”
I swallowed the wolfsbane. The empty vial shattered against the floor. Merek caught me as my legs failed, while Grandmother shouted for him to save me.
Rhea’s POV“Nola kept records,” I replied. “She also kept Mara’s letters. Every one carried the Redfang seal showing that your guards received it.”Calder turned towards Dagan. “You told me Mara stopped writing after we offered her a home here,” he said.“That was what Vesta told us,” Dagan answered. “We had no reason to doubt our mate.”His answer proved more than he meant it to. They had trusted Vesta without facing the woman who had once fed and protected them. Dagan blamed clan duties. Calder blamed the forge. Soren blamed the border war. Merek insisted Mara had rejected his medicine. Their excuses kept them in Vesta’s stronghold while Mara sold her blankets to buy fever herbs.Nola had told me why they found it so easy to believe the worst of her. Soon after Vesta joined them, several Redfang warriors lost control after taking medicine from the clan store. The jars contained silverrot, a powder that caused pain and madness in werewolves. Vesta’s guards found Mara’s herb seal be
Rhea’s POVMonica lifted the fruit basket and turned towards the door. “I understand,” she said tearfully. “If my presence destroys this family, I will leave Redfang.”Dagan stopped her at once. Calder promised she would surrender nothing, and Soren accused me of using old pain to punish her.“Sit down, Monica,” Grandmother ordered. “Running away whenever a question is asked will not clear your name.”“Nothing she owns was purchased with your money,” I said. The room became quiet. I pointed to Monica’s silver dress. “That came from Mara’s compensation fund.”Dagan’s expression changed. “That account belongs to Redfang.”“The Northern Council created it to repay the supplies Mara provided during the war. Her child was the sole beneficiary.”My fathers had controlled the fund because I was a baby. Monica’s room, awakening feast, jewellery, birthday parade, and Black Hollow payments had all been taken from it.Nola showed me the records during my second winter underground. She had entere
Rhea’s POVThe blade missed my heart, but I remained unconscious for five days. Merek used Redfang’s last vial of Dawnheart Essence to keep my beast core open. When I woke, Kiro lay curled beside Mara’s silver wolf inside my mind. She lifted her head but could not speak. “The medicine saved her,” Merek explained. “Your connection is weaker, but she is alive.”“Why use something so valuable on me?”“Because I am your father.”“You remembered after handing my damaged core to an interrogator?”Merek looked away. Grandmother sat near the window, where she had remained through most of my five-day coma. Dagan, Calder, and Soren entered with Monica. She carried a fruit basket and wore sleeves over the cuts she had made. “I came to apologise,” Monica said. “I never believed the rite would hurt you so badly.”Dagan announced that Monica would remain confined for one month, lose her training privileges, and have her allowance examined. His anger had been real when the stable servant exposed her
Rhea’s POV“I did not take her,” I said before they could accuse me. Dagan reached for my shoulders, but Grandmother struck his hands away. “She can barely sit up,” she warned.“Monica left the banquet to find her,” Dagan replied. “Rhea’s knife and Black Hollow cloak were found beside her blood.” He looked at me. “Tell me where she is.”I could barely stand, yet he demanded that I wake Kiro and track Monica. My inner wolf was fading with me and held no memory of Monica leaving. The more truth I offered, the more he demanded an answer he already believed. Something inside me stopped fighting. “You are right,” I said. “I took Monica.”All four fathers stared. I told them I had attacked her and hidden her body. The lie was cruel enough to make them act quickly, which was what I wanted.“She is telling you what you demanded to hear,” Grandmother said. “I know this child. She would not hurt Monica.”“You do not know what happened before she was sent away,” Dagan replied. He had the evidenc
Rhea’s POVMerek forced bitter medicine into my mouth while Calder held my shoulders. I swallowed, vomited, and was made to swallow again. “Stay with me,” Merek ordered, pressing his fingers over my wolf mark. “If your beast core closes, I cannot reopen it.”I wanted to remind him that he had damaged it first. Before I could speak, the hall disappeared. Inside the darkness, a woman stood beside a silver wolf. I had seen her during my worst nights in Black Hollow and blamed hunger.Four faded Redfang marks lined her dress. Her face resembled mine. “Mara?” I asked.“Not yet, little wolf,” my mother replied. She covered my damaged mark with her hand. “Live long enough to learn why they abandoned us.”In that spiritual space, Mara’s inner silver wolf touched Kiro’s head. My black wolf looked small and weak, but her voice returned. “Come back with me,” Kiro pleaded.Pain dragged me into Merek’s treatment room. Medicine tubes entered my arm, and a healing lamp burned above the bed.Grandmot
