Chapter 1

Author: Berry Jo
(Tony's POV)

I turned and walked toward the elevator.

Abby Young frowned at the gifts scattered across the floor, but she made no move to come after me.

The door closed behind me.

Then, I heard Gene Burke laugh. “Don’t worry. Tony’s just feeling left out, so he’s throwing a tantrum.”

Abby’s voice drifted through the door. “Don’t mind him, Dad. He’s a friend of ours. That’s how he is.”

The elevator arrived.

I had heard enough. I stepped inside without looking back, shutting out the sound of everyone fussing over Gene.

As the elevator descended, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was texts from Abby.

[Enough with the drama. My dad spent all day making this dinner. What are my parents supposed to think after the way you behaved?]

[Besides, Gene is your best friend, not some stranger. He’s already hurting from the breakup. Why are you making things worse?]

I stared at the screen for a few seconds before replying.

[I’m only a friend, remember? I wouldn’t want to intrude on your family dinner.]

A second later, texts from Gene came, along with a photo of an elaborate feast.

[Tony, her parents put a lot of work into this dinner. You shouldn’t disrespect everything they did for us.]

[If my being here bothers you that much, I’ll leave.]

It was absurd. They took turns trying to persuade me to go back, yet neither of them had any intention of telling Abby’s parents the truth.

I looked more closely at the photo. Not a dish on that table was something I liked.

Three of them contained seafood, which I was allergic to, while the rest were loaded with enough spicy ingredients to make them impossible for me to eat.

They were, however, all Gene’s favorites.

Suddenly, the whole thing felt pointless.

By the time I stepped outside the apartment building, it had started raining. Within seconds, my thin shirt was soaked through.

The rideshare app showed a twenty-three-minute wait as rainwater streamed from my hair.

I suddenly remembered asking Abby the night before, “Is there anything I should know before meeting your parents tomorrow?”

She had been smiling at a message from someone and did not even look up. “It’s just dinner. Relax. You’re going to do fine.”

I had assumed she was simply playing it cool, too awkward to admit that she was nervous for me too.

I finally understood. To her, this dinner had never been about me. I was only tagging along.

My phone rang. Thinking it was my driver, I answered.

Mr. Young’s voice was warm. “Tony, please come back. You’re our guest, and this is your first time here. Abby should’ve made you feel more welcome.”

I could hear Abby in the background. “Dad, if he doesn’t want to join, let him go. Why bother calling when he’s determined to sulk?”

I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could speak, Gene’s cheerful voice came through the phone. “Mr. Young, let me bring in the last dish. It looks delicious!”

Then, I heard the affection in Abby’s voice. “I knew you were coming, so I asked Dad to make all your favorites. You have to eat more.”

It was quiet on the other end of the line.

Something inside my chest quietly crumbled to dust.

“Abby can be inconsiderate sometimes. Please don’t hold it against her…”

“Mr. Young,” I interrupted, my voice nearly drowned out by the rain.

“The truth is, I’m the one who was dating your daughter. But as of today, we’re over.”

One week later, Abby received a formal termination notice from corporate headquarters. She was fired for serious violations of company policy and for abusing her position to benefit a family member.Investigators had found dozens of posts on Gene’s social media accounts bragging about how great his girlfriend’s company benefits were and offering to get people jobs there. The posts gave them all the evidence they needed.Abby sat alone in her empty house, calling one company after another in search of work. Every response was the same.“Ms. Young, we don’t currently have any positions that would be a good fit.”Not a company in the city was willing to hire her.She knew who was behind it, but she was in no position to confront them. That evening, Abby sat alone in her living room with a cake she had waited more than two hours to buy.She scrolled through my social media profile and stopped at my latest post. It was a photo of an offer letter.I had accepted a high-paying posi

The next day, Gene published a lengthy post online. The title read, [My Best Friend Stole My Wife.]He painted himself as an orphan who had lost his parents at a young age. He called me his “best friend” and claimed that I had stolen Abby from him while they were in a long-distance relationship. According to him, he had suffered in silence for years, only to finally marry her and then be threatened with divorce. The emotional story quickly went viral.People flooded my social media accounts, calling me a “jerk,” a “homewrecker,” and “shameless.”The friend I was staying with trembled with anger. “I’ll get that post taken down!”I calmly scrolled through the comments. “No. Let him keep talking. The more attention he gets now, the worse it will be when the truth comes out.”That afternoon, Gloria’s legal team sent Gene a formal cease-and-desist letter. At the same time, a complete set of message screenshots was anonymously posted online. They included a photo of Gene’s wedding

Abby believed that once she sold the house and returned Tony’s money, everything would go back to the way it had been. The very day she listed the house with a real estate agent, Gene stormed into her office. He sat down in the reception area and shouted through his tears, “Abby, if you sell my house, I’ll jump off the roof!”Her coworkers whispered among themselves while clients stared.Furious, Abby dragged him into her office. “What do you want from me?”“I want you to tell everyone that I’m your husband!”Gene clutched her sleeve tightly. “You promised you would take care of me for the rest of my life. Now, you’re trying to ruin my life for that man?”“You schemed against him first,” Abby said, pulling her arm free.“I only wanted you to see who loves you more!”Gene let out a hysterical laugh. “Gloria pursued Tony for three years, and he never wanted her. “Then, the moment you pushed him away, he married her. What does that tell you? He was waiting for an excuse! He neve

(Third-Person POV)Abby sat in her car for three hours. She smoked one cigarette after another until the ashtray overflowed with cigarette butts. She kept staring at the screenshot of Tony’s post. The sight of Gloria’s hand intertwined with Tony’s and their matching wedding bands, which were on full display, made her eyes ache.“It’s fake. It has to be fake,” she muttered to herself as she opened her message thread with Gene.[I’m taking back the house. Send me the purchase documents.]Gene replied almost immediately. [Abby, what are you talking about? We bought that house together.][Did you contribute a cent?]She stared at the screen and remembered the money Tony had transferred to her.Eighty thousand dollars. It was every cent Tony had saved over four years.Abby started the engine and sped toward Gene’s house. She hammered on the front door.Gene opened it with his hair still wet. The moment he saw the fury on her face, he forced a smile. “Abby, what are you doing h

Gloria and I got married at the courthouse.I looked at the matching bands on our fingers and felt a sudden sense of absurdity.Five years with Abby had left me betrayed and broke. One phone call had brought me a promise of forever.I took a photo of our hands with the wedding bands clearly visible and posted it with the caption, [Here’s to forever.]I made the post public. It did not take long for one of our mutual friends to send Abby a screenshot. As she stared at it, she gripped her phone so tightly that her knuckles turned white.“It’s fake… It has to be fake…”Gene poked his head out of the bedroom. When he saw how pale she looked, he hurried over.He leaned toward the screen. His eyes narrowed briefly before he broke into a smile. “Abby, he obviously edited the photo. He’s just trying to get a reaction out of you!”He shrugged dismissively. “Besides, someone like Gloria Howard would never marry Tony.”Gloria Howard?Abby shot to her feet. She knew exactly who Gloria

  • My Friend’s Act   Chapter 5

After arriving home, Abby thought of my departing figure. Panic flickered through her suddenly. We had been together for five years. Every fight had ended the same way. She showed up with something from my favorite bakery, said a few comforting words, and we made up.Abby massaged the bridge of her nose. My words still lingered in her mind, but her unease was soon smothered by irritation. She thought, ‘How dare he speak to me like that?’When Gene met her gaze, guilt flickered in his eyes.Abby’s voice hardened with accusation. “Tony knows we’re married. Did you tell him?”Gene’s eyes immediately filled with tears. “I-I just wanted to apologize and explain everything.”“You promised to keep it a secret.”Gene sat beside her and said quickly, “I was afraid Tony would get the wrong idea about you and start another fight. “I wanted him to understand that you were only trying to help me, that you hadn’t chosen me over him…”His voice grew increasingly wounded. “Abby, I know I sh
