Chapter 2

Deep Sea Miner
Kiara stared at my horribly mangled hands, something flickering in her eyes.

However, it was only for a brief moment, as in the next second, her expression darkened.

"Shane, just endure it a little longer." She was unable to bring herself to meet my gaze, her eyes darting away. "Cain's artificial heart is more important, and every little bit of money needs to go to him to save his life. You just need to save up a little more, and it'll all be over soon…"

By that, she meant the 999th test, didn't she?

Cain's artificial heart was more important only because he was here to oversee my tests. He had the power to decide whether I passed or not, so she couldn't afford to upset him.

Up till now, Kiara still thought that we would be able to marry after I passed this last test, that we would be able to live her dream life.

Unfortunately for her, I no longer wished to play this game with her.

Just as I was about to speak, Cain hung his head and uttered bitterly, "Shane, don't blame Kia. This is all my fault. I'm nothing but a burden to you two… I'm sorry, Shane. I won't take the medicine anymore, so don't be angry, alright?"

With that said, he turned to throw himself at the wall.

Kiara was quick to respond, flinging her arms around his waist and pulling him back. Anxiety was scrawled across her features as she cried out, "Shane, listen to me this once, okay? If you're a man, then you can endure it a little longer. Just wash them under running cold water, and you'll be fine… It'll be okay soon… Really… It'll be okay…"

Staring at the peeling and angry red skin on my hands, I thought back to two years ago.

For the sake of saving money to buy Cain's imported medication, I started eating only plain bread. Besides that, so that Kiara could get enough nourishment for her body, I gave her all the meat while leaving myself with only the vegetable scraps. Because of this, my originally muscular body had lost so much weight that I was hardly recognizable.

I had been haunted by guilt, blaming myself for causing Kiara to become crippled and Cain to injure his heart. I owed them my life, so I was willing to do anything to redeem myself, even be their slave or do the most humiliating things.

Yet, all that suffering had been for nothing.

"Alright, I understand."

With a nod, I turned and entered the cramped, dimly lit bathroom.

Twisting the tap, I allowed the cool water to run over my burns for a moment before dipping my head under the stream. The water slid over my cheeks, hiding the faint hint of self-mockery on my face.

At that moment, my phone vibrated.

It was a message from an unknown number and unknown IP address, with only one simple word, "Okay."

I knew that it was Winona. Only she would contact me in such a manner.

My nightmare would be over soon.

After taking a shower, I collapsed onto my bed, only to wake up in the middle of the night with a fever. Through the feverish haze, I got up, planning on getting a glass of water.

However, I had only just made it to the curtain separating the living room from the bedrooms when I heard Cain speak, his voice deliberately pitched low.

"Kia, for his 999th test, let's have him do a full-body sealed mold."

Kiara answered somewhat hesitantly, "That's too dangerous. It would be so easy for him to lose his life."

Cain wrapped an arm around her shoulders and cajoled in a deceptively sincere tone, "This is the only way to prove that he isn't after the Sommer family's wealth and is with you because he truly loves you. Think about it. If he's even willing to risk his life for you, what reason does your family have to protest you marrying him?"

I had heard people on the black market talking about full-body sealed molds before. The person undergoing the process would be completely sealed in silicon or plaster, leaving only two holes at the nostrils for them to breathe through.

If the operator made a mistake or if someone deliberately sabotaged the process, then the person sealed inside the mold would suffocate to death. Even if all safety measures were taken, the person inside would be unable to eat or drink until the mold formed completely and they were able to leave.

No matter how I looked at it, it was either death or horrible suffering.

I was already shivering from my fever, but hearing that suggestion only made me shake harder.

Nonetheless, Cain was still trying to persuade Kiara.

"He just needs to endure this one last test. After that, you two will finally be able to marry."

Kiara was silent for a long while, long enough that I was beginning to think that she still had a shred of conscience and would reject this ridiculous suggestion.

However, when she finally spoke up, it was to say, "Alright, we'll do as you say. I'm heading back now."

The sound of her wheelchair moving had me hurrying back to bed, where I closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep.

My heart pounded like a drum.

I had to leave.

I had to protect myself while waiting for Winona to come for me.

Once Kiara was deeply asleep, I forced myself through the pain and snuck out of bed toward the front door.

Just as my hand landed on the doorknob, a blinding ray of light snapped to life behind me.

"Shane, where are you going so late at night?"

"W-What?" Kiara was dumbfounded.I slowly said, "That car accident two years ago… You arranged for it, didn't you? The whole 'jumping in to save me' act was all just a show you put on to gain my sympathy, and like an absolute fool, I believed it. I was overcome by my guilt for two entire years and was willing to be your slave. All this while, I've been nothing but a puppet dancing on your strings."Nothing but bitterness welled in me when I said those words."Y-You know everything?"Kiara looked like all the strength had been drained from her, her words getting stuck in her throat. It almost felt like something was gluing her lips shut.A few seconds later, she let out a wry laugh. "Alright. Since that's the case, let me do one last thing for you."With that, she slowly got to her feet and focused her attention on Cain, who was still trying to weasel his way out of the situation."Don't be scared, Cain," she murmured in his ear with an eerily gentle tone. "Let's go together.""

"No, Cain isn't that sort of person…" Kiara protested. When Cain realized that Kiara was wavering, he immediately panicked. He stepped out from behind her and jabbed a finger at me, yelling, "Shane Jensen, when have I ever done those things? Don't think that you can slander me just because you have someone backing you up now!"So what if you've hooked yourself a wealthy woman? Kia, just look at him! Who's to say that he didn't start cheating on you long before this!"He had barely finished speaking when several bodyguards seized him without any hesitation."What are you doing? I'm—"A resounding smack cut through the air as Winona took off her gloves and landed a vicious slap on his face."I normally don't slap people, but I can make an exception for truly vile people like you."Cain cradled his throbbing cheek as he turned to seek help from Kiara. "Kia, she hit me! Aren't you going to take revenge for me?"Kiara was just about to respond when her phone suddenly rang.Since sh

Kiara's POVKiara rushed toward the man, almost tripping over her own feet."Shane! Is that you?"However, when the man turned around to reveal a completely unfamiliar face, Kiara screeched to a halt."Miss, I think you have the wrong person.""I-I'm sorry…" Kiara apologized despondently."Kia, don't be too sad." Cain had chased after her the moment he saw her running. "Look over there. That must be the queen of the underworld, right? Let's hurry over to greet her."Kiara followed his finger and glanced in that direction, only to see a woman with her back toward them. Even so, she exuded an undeniable air of power.Beside her, also with his back toward them, stood a man in a white suit. He had a muscular build, and even from afar, he had a cool, almost distant demeanor.Taking a deep breath, Kiara forced herself to regain her composure. Then, putting on a humble smile, she walked toward the duo with Cain."Ms. Jensen, I've long heard of your name. I'm Kiara Sommer from Sommer

In truth, even after Winona said that she wouldn't bother with me anymore, when she realized that I wasn't living well, she had actually gone after Kiara a few times. However, each time, I had jumped in to protect Kiara. Now that I was giving Winona permission to take Kiara down, Winona was more than eager and happy to."I promise you, I'll make them pay a hundred times, no, a thousand times what they did to you. I'll destroy the Sommer family and set fireworks off to celebrate."…"It's been half a month now, yet why is there still no news on Shane!" Kiara roared furiously. The past two weeks of frustration and anxiety had left her with dark circles under her sunken eyes.Cain carefully pushed open the door and entered with a bowl of oatmeal."Kia, have a little something to eat.""Get lost!" Kiara shoved him away from her. "If it weren't for you holding me back that day, stopping me from going to look for him, how could Shane have disappeared?"Cain frowned, visibly upset at

Kiara dashed over and began rummaging through the ruins in search of me.When she failed to find any signs of me, she turned toward the workshop boss who had been covering in a corner and lifted him into the air with a burst of strength."Where is he? Tell me!"Blood painted the man's face from his earlier beating. He stammered in reply, "H-He was taken away by some mercenaries… It was so terrifying… Fulton, you never said he had someone backing him up…"Realizing that the boss was about to reveal his involvement in the matter, Cain hastily tried to deflect the blame. "Stop spouting nonsense. Shane is just a normal person, so where the heck would he have gotten a backer? What are you even saying?"However, Kiara wasn't listening, her mind elsewhere as she wondered where the mercenaries had come from."Shane, Shane…"She released the boss and stumbled back a few steps, bumping into a nearby steel barrel. The barrel tipped over and caused a clump of solidified silicon to roll out.

I struggled to lift my head and peer through my tear-blurred vision. This time, it wasn't a hallucination. The person in the black trench coat leading the charge, all while exuding a murderous intent, was none other than my older sister, Winona. She didn't bother wasting any breath on talking, directly ordering her men to beat up everyone in sight.Compared to these professional mercenaries, the burly men pinning me down were like lambs to be slaughtered. The crunching of gun stocks breaking bones rang out, along with horrible screams and pleas for mercy.Winona dashed through the throng and immediately caught sight of me, shackled to the workbench, naked and with wounds littering my body.In that moment, Winona, who had always been calm and composed, actually started to shake."Shane… I was too late…"She didn't even dare to touch me for fear of hurting me more.In the end, she unlocked the steel collar with trembling hands and red-rimmed eyes, then took off her trench coat an
