Chapter 3

Penulis: Deep Sea Miner
Cain stood behind me with a flashlight in hand, which he shone right in my face.

Forcing myself to appear calm, I pointed at my swollen hand. "My hands were hurting too much, so I wanted to get some fresh air outside."

Hearing that, Cain smiled, grabbed a glass of water, and began walking toward me with frail steps.

"Shane, you have a fever, and going outside will only make it worse. Here, have some water."

He had barely finished speaking when he released his grip on the glass, sending it crashing to the floor.

"What was that? What's happened?"

The shattering of the glass jolted Kiara out of her sleep. She wheeled herself out of the room, and when she noticed me standing by the front door, her face fell.

"Shane, where are you going?"

The ease with which they played off each other finally caused my taut nerves to snap.

"Kiara Sommer, stop with the act. Your legs are perfectly fine, and Cain isn't sick either. You two have been deceiving me all along, haven't you?"

Kiara's expression froze at my words.

Showing her the boils littering my palms, I rasped lowly, "I'm really in a lot of pain and want to go to the hospital. Please, just let me go."

A hint of panic flashed in Kiara's eyes before she seized my wrist, her fingers just so happening to wrap around the biggest burn there.

"Let go!" I groaned at the pain, instantly breaking out in a cold sweat.

Nonetheless, not only did she not release me, but she even tightened her grip.

"Shane, I know you're in pain, but this is going to be the very last time. Once you've passed the test, we'll get married, okay?"

I stared at her, taking in her anxious expression, and found myself staring at a stranger. It was a terrifying sensation.

Two years ago, right before a car was about to crash into me, she had leaped forward without any hesitation to protect me.

At the time, I had been beyond touched and vowed to take care of her for the rest of our lives.

When Winona, who was involved in both the legal and criminal worlds, heard this, she immediately protested.

"There's something off about that car crash. Shane, come back here. I'll help you pay the compensation money, even support her for the rest of her life, just as long as you don't get so close to her."

I refused to believe her back then. I assumed she was just paranoid from dabbling in illegal matters all the time and thought the worst of everyone.

That infuriated her so much that she went off on a bout of swearing before saying she wouldn't bother with me ever again.

Now, it looked like everything Winona had said was true.

"I don't want to marry you anymore. Kiara Sommer, I don't love you anymore. I just want to go home…" My expression was stony as I ripped my wrist from her grasp.

A tinge of violent malice flashed in Kiara's eyes when she heard that. "This is your home. Where else are you going? Who are you going to marry if not me?"

"Kia, since he's discovered the truth, let's not wait till tomorrow," Cain stated lowly.

Kiara was silent for a second before she nodded.

"You're right. Better to do it now than have complications arise later."

Subsequently, she stood up from her wheelchair.

Although she was a woman, the Sommers were all trained in combat regardless of gender. That, coupled with the agony of my burns, left me powerless to fight back.

In no time at all, she had me pinned against the wall.

That damp, dark underground workshop was only two streets away from where we lived.

"Shane, don't blame me for this. I just love you too much."

At three in the morning, the streets were empty.

My raging fever left me in a daze. Before I knew it, Kiara and Cain had brought me to the underground workshop and placed me on the workbench.

"Don't be scared, Shane. I've already instructed the boss to adjust the temperature so that it's just right. You won't get hurt."

Her kiss landed on my forehead, cold and slimy like a venomous snake.

"Just take a little nap in there, okay? Once you wake, we'll go get our marriage certificate."

Then, she turned to the workshop's boss.

"Pay close attention and ensure he isn't harmed."

"Got it, Ms. Sommer. You can leave it to me."

With that, the door shut with a resounding thud.

"How stupid."

Kiara had barely left when the boss strolled over to my side casually. Picking up a pair of scissors, he waved them in my face.

"Who the hell has the time to keep an eye on the temperature? Mr. Fullton paid me good money to ensure you die in there."

"W-What?" Kiara was dumbfounded.I slowly said, "That car accident two years ago… You arranged for it, didn't you? The whole 'jumping in to save me' act was all just a show you put on to gain my sympathy, and like an absolute fool, I believed it. I was overcome by my guilt for two entire years and was willing to be your slave. All this while, I've been nothing but a puppet dancing on your strings."Nothing but bitterness welled in me when I said those words."Y-You know everything?"Kiara looked like all the strength had been drained from her, her words getting stuck in her throat. It almost felt like something was gluing her lips shut.A few seconds later, she let out a wry laugh. "Alright. Since that's the case, let me do one last thing for you."With that, she slowly got to her feet and focused her attention on Cain, who was still trying to weasel his way out of the situation."Don't be scared, Cain," she murmured in his ear with an eerily gentle tone. "Let's go together.""

"No, Cain isn't that sort of person…" Kiara protested. When Cain realized that Kiara was wavering, he immediately panicked. He stepped out from behind her and jabbed a finger at me, yelling, "Shane Jensen, when have I ever done those things? Don't think that you can slander me just because you have someone backing you up now!"So what if you've hooked yourself a wealthy woman? Kia, just look at him! Who's to say that he didn't start cheating on you long before this!"He had barely finished speaking when several bodyguards seized him without any hesitation."What are you doing? I'm—"A resounding smack cut through the air as Winona took off her gloves and landed a vicious slap on his face."I normally don't slap people, but I can make an exception for truly vile people like you."Cain cradled his throbbing cheek as he turned to seek help from Kiara. "Kia, she hit me! Aren't you going to take revenge for me?"Kiara was just about to respond when her phone suddenly rang.Since sh

Kiara's POVKiara rushed toward the man, almost tripping over her own feet."Shane! Is that you?"However, when the man turned around to reveal a completely unfamiliar face, Kiara screeched to a halt."Miss, I think you have the wrong person.""I-I'm sorry…" Kiara apologized despondently."Kia, don't be too sad." Cain had chased after her the moment he saw her running. "Look over there. That must be the queen of the underworld, right? Let's hurry over to greet her."Kiara followed his finger and glanced in that direction, only to see a woman with her back toward them. Even so, she exuded an undeniable air of power.Beside her, also with his back toward them, stood a man in a white suit. He had a muscular build, and even from afar, he had a cool, almost distant demeanor.Taking a deep breath, Kiara forced herself to regain her composure. Then, putting on a humble smile, she walked toward the duo with Cain."Ms. Jensen, I've long heard of your name. I'm Kiara Sommer from Sommer

In truth, even after Winona said that she wouldn't bother with me anymore, when she realized that I wasn't living well, she had actually gone after Kiara a few times. However, each time, I had jumped in to protect Kiara. Now that I was giving Winona permission to take Kiara down, Winona was more than eager and happy to."I promise you, I'll make them pay a hundred times, no, a thousand times what they did to you. I'll destroy the Sommer family and set fireworks off to celebrate."…"It's been half a month now, yet why is there still no news on Shane!" Kiara roared furiously. The past two weeks of frustration and anxiety had left her with dark circles under her sunken eyes.Cain carefully pushed open the door and entered with a bowl of oatmeal."Kia, have a little something to eat.""Get lost!" Kiara shoved him away from her. "If it weren't for you holding me back that day, stopping me from going to look for him, how could Shane have disappeared?"Cain frowned, visibly upset at

Kiara dashed over and began rummaging through the ruins in search of me.When she failed to find any signs of me, she turned toward the workshop boss who had been covering in a corner and lifted him into the air with a burst of strength."Where is he? Tell me!"Blood painted the man's face from his earlier beating. He stammered in reply, "H-He was taken away by some mercenaries… It was so terrifying… Fulton, you never said he had someone backing him up…"Realizing that the boss was about to reveal his involvement in the matter, Cain hastily tried to deflect the blame. "Stop spouting nonsense. Shane is just a normal person, so where the heck would he have gotten a backer? What are you even saying?"However, Kiara wasn't listening, her mind elsewhere as she wondered where the mercenaries had come from."Shane, Shane…"She released the boss and stumbled back a few steps, bumping into a nearby steel barrel. The barrel tipped over and caused a clump of solidified silicon to roll out.

I struggled to lift my head and peer through my tear-blurred vision. This time, it wasn't a hallucination. The person in the black trench coat leading the charge, all while exuding a murderous intent, was none other than my older sister, Winona. She didn't bother wasting any breath on talking, directly ordering her men to beat up everyone in sight.Compared to these professional mercenaries, the burly men pinning me down were like lambs to be slaughtered. The crunching of gun stocks breaking bones rang out, along with horrible screams and pleas for mercy.Winona dashed through the throng and immediately caught sight of me, shackled to the workbench, naked and with wounds littering my body.In that moment, Winona, who had always been calm and composed, actually started to shake."Shane… I was too late…"She didn't even dare to touch me for fear of hurting me more.In the end, she unlocked the steel collar with trembling hands and red-rimmed eyes, then took off her trench coat an
