My girlfriend, Kiara Sommer, gets one of her legs crippled in order to save me. Her adopted younger brother, Cain Fullton, suffers from heart failure after shielding us from harm. Since then, his heart becomes extremely weak, and he has to rely on the expensive imported medication just to survive. In order to gather enough money for their surgical bills, I take on a body-casting job in the black market. Not only are my limbs encased in scalding hot silicon, but I also have to endure it whenever a few female perverts cop a feel of me. I can't even move an inch when I'm doing my job. After all, I'll have to compensate for the damages if I ruin the mold. I can only grit my teeth and endure the agony, only to get slapped a few times in the face afterward. "You already have the guts to take on a job like this, and yet you're frightened of getting groped?" As I withstand the humiliation and the burning pain, I return to the hospital with the money in hopes of buying more medicine for Cain. When I walk past a VIP lounge, I hear familiar laughter erupting from within. "Kia, this is the 998th test, right? Once Shane passes 999 tests, are you really going to marry him?" Kiara frowns slightly at the question, though she soon replies coolly, "Yeah. The tests stem from my family's rules, and you're ordered to serve as the supervisor. But still, don't go overboard, yeah? Shane is the only one meant to be my husband." So, Kiara lies to me and torments me to this point just so she can marry me? As I stare at my broken and bruised reflection in the mirror, I feel my lips curling into a smile all of a sudden. With trembling hands, I dig out the old phone that I haven't used for the past two years. My eyes slowly redden as well. Then, I draft a text message. "I regret everything now, Winona. Please take me home."

Chapter 1

After sending the message to my older sister, Winona Jensen, I endured the agony shooting through my whole body and decided to leave. I had to get out of here before the people inside the room came out.

However, before I could make a move, the door to the lounge opened.

Almost instinctively, I hid myself in the nearby emergency stairwell and peeked through the gap.

Cain Fullton exited the room while holding a box of supplement drinks. After taking a sip, he said mockingly, "That Shane might be worthless, but there's no denying that he has an eye for the good stuff."

For the sake of that box of supplement drinks, I had almost been taken advantage of by a few perverts while trapped in the mold. At the time, all I could think of was how respectful and nice Cain was to me, of his ghastly pale face as he gasped for breath. Hence, I had forced myself to endure it, all so I could get him something to boost his health.

Never would I have expected that he didn't even need it.

"Mind your mouth. At the end of the day, Shane is still your future brother-in-law, so don't talk about him like that," a familiar woman's voice replied.

Following that, Kiara Sommer, my girlfriend who broke her legs two years ago and needed help to even use the toilet, actually stood up.

She walked toward Cain, her gait steady, strong, and elegant. There was nothing to show that she had been crippled, not even a slight limp.

In fact, she even took out a pair of shoes and offered them to Cain.

"It's the newest limited edition on the market. Try it out and see if it fits."

"Kia, my heart isn't feeling too good. Could you help me put it on?"

Cain plopped down on the couch with a playful smile as he extended a leg toward her.

To my shock, Kiara actually crouched down and helped him with the shoelaces.

"Fine. As long as you're willing to help me and let Shane pass the tests, I'll do whatever you say."

When Kiara finished speaking, Cain used the tip of his toes to lift the hem of her skirt teasingly.

It was a blatantly flirtatious motion, yet all Kiara did was laugh indulgently.

I had seen the netizens talking about those shoes online before, and they were worth at least 20 thousand dollars.

In the last two years, Kiara had expressed to me more than once how she and Cain couldn't even afford to buy any painkillers.

Thus, to scrounge up enough money for them both to undergo surgery, I couldn't even bring myself to buy those cheap five-dollar shoes, not even when my only pair of shoes split at the seams. When the biting chill of winter froze my toes and caused sores to form, all I did was secretly apply some toothpaste to help stop the itch.

I never told her about it out of fear that she would worry, that she would think she was a burden to me.

Yet, as it turned out, I had been nothing but a fool, thorough and thorough.

I had no idea how I managed to leave the hospital, but when I pushed open the front door to our home, Kiara was already back in her wheelchair.

"Shane, you're back! Why were you so late tonight? You must be exhausted."

She pressed a hand against her leg as she put on a concerned look, though she kept her brow slightly furrowed, as though she were trying to endure tremendous agony.

If this had been in the past, I would've immediately rushed over to massage her legs when I saw this.

Now, however…

"Shane…"

Cain also came out of his tiny room. He used the wall to support himself as he walked, stopping every few steps to pant for breath. It made him look like he was liable to collapse at any moment.

"Shane… I've finished my medication. Did you buy any back today? My chest feels so tight…"

He could've won an award for his acting skills. If I hadn't seen with my own eyes how his skin had been flushed a healthy pink at the hospital, I might've even believed him.

Like a fool, I had been running between the hospital and the black market, all because I had been worried about him dying.

Yet, it had been an act all along, be it his injury or the resulting sickness.

Could it be that the car accident Kiara took on my behalf two years ago was also fake?

I curled my fingers into tight fists, deciding to give her one last chance.

"I was too exhausted today, and I also burned my hands, so I didn't buy it."

Then, I showed them my hands. Old calluses were everywhere, and the skin was currently swollen, red, and had newly-formed boils.

"Kia, I burned my hands. Could you… Give me some money to buy some burn cream?"
