My Girlfriend Cheated, so I'm Getting Married
Penulis: Twice Blessed

Chapter 1

Penulis: Twice Blessed
I ended the call as soon as I agreed to the arranged marriage Dad had set up for me and stared blankly at my phone.

It had been seven hours since I sent the message, yet Clara Cooper, my girlfriend, still hadn't responded. In the past, even when she was mad at me and refused to speak to me, she had never gone more than three hours without responding to my messages.

I wouldn't have thought much of it if Clara had simply become more distant with me, but I happened to pick up Clara's phone yesterday and noticed that her chat with Thomas Zimmerman, her assistant, was pinned to the top.

She replied to him so quickly that there was barely any time gap between his messages and her responses. She was clearly responding to him the second he sent the message.

Just as I thought about this, I instinctively scrolled through the messages Thomas had sent to provoke me earlier, with one of them being a message Clara had sent him.

"Those nine years I spent with Hunter were nine years he stole from you! You're the only one I want to marry! We're clearly childhood sweethearts, Thomas! How could I possibly love Hunter? You can rest assured that you're the only one I'm going to marry, Thomas!"

I had been with Clara for nine years—four years studying at college, then five years getting her company off the ground. She had never once brought up marriage during that period. I used to throw fits and start arguments over it in the past.

She initially said, "I'm still trying to establish myself in my career, so getting married and having a family now would only hold me back. Why can't you just try to understand where I'm coming from, Hunter?"

Yet, when things got better, she changed her tune. "Is getting married really that important to you? Why are you so concerned with something so superficial, Hunter?"

It turned out that, regardless of how her career was going, I had never been the person she intended to marry.

I heard the lock turn at the front door. Clara came in, walked right past me without even looking my way, and went straight to the bathroom.

I glanced at the date on my phone and realized our ninth anniversary was coming up. Clara had always been attentive whenever my birthday or our anniversary was near, especially when we first started dating. She would tiptoe around the subject and ask what I liked or if there was anything I needed.

She gave me a fountain pen engraved with my name, a game console I had wanted for a long time, a watch too expensive for me to buy myself, and many more. Every gift she had given me back then had been something she had chosen with care.

Yet, as time went on, Clara remembering the date at all became something to be grateful for. Her gifts became increasingly perfunctory. She would give me a gift set for my birthday and another for our anniversary.

I had once opened the gift set and caught the look of surprise on her face. I figured she had no idea what was packed in the gift set.

I thought back on everything that had happened, finding the whole thing ridiculous and pathetic. I felt ridiculous for expecting anything from this relationship and pathetic for giving it my all.

It didn't matter anymore, though, as there were only 15 days left of our nine-year relationship.

It was 11:00 pm by the time I washed up and got ready for bed.

Clara was already lying in bed when her phone rang. She immediately got up and went out onto the balcony to answer the call. She came back a few minutes later and said, "I have to go on a business trip since something suddenly came up at work."

She couldn't even bring herself to look me in the eye when she said that.

I merely hummed in assent, lowered my gaze to my book, and asked, "Are you going to be back by the 18th then?"

"You mean the day after tomorrow?" Clara froze briefly, then seemed to realize what I meant. She came closer and said, "I'll definitely be back on the 18th. It's our ninth anniversary, after all. How could I possibly forget that?"

"Alright," I said with a faint smile. I had no intention of celebrating the anniversary with her. I just wanted to break up with her on that day and put an end to these nine years together.

Clara left at 12:00 am, just as the date changed to a new one on my phone. There were exactly 14 days left before I returned home for my arranged marriage.

Thus, the days went by, and the 18th soon arrived.

I heard nothing from Clara. I saw Thomas' travel vlog instead. I noticed a slender, graceful figure walking past in the background while he flashed an arrogant grin at the camera. I recognized at a glance that it was Clara. She was actually wearing the dress I bought her for our eighth anniversary last year.

I posted a photo on Instagram once I arrived at Salvoland, and Thomas liked it. I had never blocked him on my social media or WhatsApp, even after the whole incident. He actually messaged me out of the blue. "Clara's been sentenced."I didn't realize things had gotten to the point where she could be sent to prison. I thought she had simply lost her company and gone bankrupt.Thomas explained, "She became convinced that everyone had wronged her and started taking it out on society once she went bankrupt. "She would try to break up any couple she saw being affectionate. She eventually picked a fight with a couple who were medical and law students. They suffered minor injuries, while she was seriously injured. She even got convicted of intentional assault."It turned out that was what happened.Thomas returned to his hometown and got himself a stable job. He remained single and didn't pursue another relationship. He said he wanted to build a life on his own, work hard, earn an hone

"Do you want me to turn it back on, then?" Tiana teased.I couldn't help but chuckle. "It's alright. I can already figure out the whole situation."I couldn't say I was entirely in the dark about what she was up to these past few days since Clara and I had mutual friends. Clara's reputation was in ruins, so naturally, things weren't going well for her.I wasn't much of a golfer, but Tiana was great at it. She came up behind me and taught me by guiding me through the motions herself. That was the first time we had been this physically close. We had been married for three days, yet we still hadn't slept together. It was mainly because I didn't want to rush through something so important. I wanted to treat her right, and sleeping together without genuine feelings involved felt completely pointless to me.I couldn't help but feel my heart skip a beat as Tiana's supple chest pressed against my back, taking me straight back to the spring when I turned 18 years old. I realized then t

It occurred to me that this might be the kind of love I had spent my whole life searching for. Then, the priest turned to me and asked me the same thing.I was just about to say "I do" when someone pushed the church doors open and yelled, "Hunter!"Clara was drenched in sweat, as if she had just been fished out of the water. "You can't marry her, Hunter!"She screamed as she ran toward me, only to be taken away by the Gunther family's bodyguards. She sounded so desperate, making it seem as though she was the innocent main character in a romance novel who had just been dumped, while Tiana and I were the mistress and scumbag.I paid no attention to the interruption. I placed my hand on the Scripture and looked at the priest and Tiana. "I do."In that instant, the guests broke into thunderous applause. I had officially married Tiana, becoming a part of the Gunther family as their son-in-law.In the middle of the guests' congratulations, another commotion broke out outside the churc

I froze for a moment, shook my head, and replied, "I'm not cold…"It was much warmer here than up north, so there was no way I could feel cold here. In those nine years I spent with Clara in the freezing north, I had been through every kind of hardship. I had even lived with her in a basement apartment with no heating, where the roof leaked in summer and the drafts came in during winter.I never dared to offer to pay for a bigger place because I didn't want to hurt Clara's pride. I foolishly chose to struggle alongside her instead. I had no idea that Clara would turn out to be the type who could share her hardships with me, but not the good fortune."What's on your mind?" Tiana asked gently.I suddenly realized that it wasn't appropriate for me to be thinking about my ex-girlfriend while I was sitting in my fiancee's car, but given where things stood, I still needed to fill her in. "I-I was actually—"I hadn't even finished speaking when Tiana suddenly cut me off. She took a tur

"I'm naturally getting married to my fiancee," I replied. I smiled faintly as I showed her my chat history with Dad. "I've already agreed to return to my hometown for the arranged marriage, so we're officially done, Clara."I didn't want to waste another second. Clara was still trying to stop me, so I quickly came up with an idea. I pointed behind her and yelled, "Thomas!" Clara turned around, just as I had expected.I immediately broke free from her and ran through the security checkpoint."You lied to me! You're such a big, fat liar, Hunter!"I couldn't make out Clara's expression from that distance. I could only hear her yelling and calling me a liar. I had deceived her, but she had been the bigger liar all along. She had spent nine years deceiving me. I had given my everything to her for the past nine years, yet it still wasn't enough to earn even a moment of her attention. If she had no intention of marrying me, then so be it. I would marry someone else instead.I boarded

I turned around in a daze, but the crowd behind me was moving so much that I couldn't make out where the voice had come from. I panicked as I grabbed my suitcase and ran.It was then that someone with a slender hand grabbed my backpack from behind and held on tight."Who is it?" I yelled, trying to wrench myself free and run. I caught Clara's face out of the corner of my eye and barked, "Let go of me!"Clara was still holding on to the necklace and note that I had left behind. "What's the meaning of this, Hunter?"I couldn't help but find it absurd when I saw the confusion on her face. "It's over between us, Clara!"I said it right in her face, but she wouldn't hear it. She yanked me off to the side and asked, "Didn't we agree to celebrate our anniversary later? You don't need to pull something like this just because you're throwing a fit, Hunter."She was still sidestepping the real issue. She had seen my note, so she must have seen the evidence I left on the table as well.I d
