Chapter 1

I parted my lips, but it felt as though something was lodged in my throat.

It took me a long while to force out, "Ian and Veronica had a wedding last year?"

No one answered.

I knew everyone in this private room. We'd wined and dined together, traveled together, and sent each other gifts during the holidays. But now, all of them hung their heads, unable to meet my eyes.

In the end, my cousin, Bridget Rochelle, broke the silence. "Yes."

I stared at her blankly, unable to process her words for what felt like an eternity.

Bridget and I had grown up together. When someone picked on me when I was a child, she would stand up for me. When a teacher reprimanded me, she'd buy me candy on the way home from school.

I had always believed that anyone in this world could deceive me, but not Bridget. Yet, here she was, siding with them.

I belatedly realized that last year, when my girlfriend, Veronica Smith, claimed she was on a business trip, she was actually tying the knot with my friend, Ian Lachlan.

I felt like such an idiot. I'd been worried that she would overexert herself, so I'd ordered late-night snacks for her and delivered them to her office. My heart had gone out for her, and I'd told her not to burn the candle at both ends.

Looking back on it now, it felt as though someone had gouged out my heart with their bare hands.

I looked at Bridget. "What do you mean? Do Ma and Pops know?"

Avoiding my gaze, she responded quietly, "They were afraid you wouldn't be able to handle it, so they never told you."

My fingertips went numb, and I could barely hold myself upright in my seat.

Ma and Pops knew all along. It hit me that Veronica wasn't the only one who had lied to me. Even my own family had helped them keep me in the dark.

At long last, I understood why everyone was so calm now. They had known all along that this day would come.

Veronica looked at me and said flatly, "I know this isn't fair to you, Jesse."

My eyes burned as I held her gaze. "You knew it wasn't fair to me, yet you did it anyway."

Her brows drew together, as if she didn't like the way I was talking to her. "What's done is done. Nothing will change even if you cause a scene now."

Ian sighed. "Veronica has done so much to make it up to you over the years, Jesse. Your younger brother's medical treatment, your job transfer, and the house you live in—which of those didn't she help you with? Everyone has been considerate of your feelings, too. Be reasonable and think about it."

"Exactly! You're the most fortunate one here," someone chimed in.

After hearing that, it felt as though my blood had run cold. I was the one who didn't belong in their eyes. Plus, I had reaped all the benefits.

Apparently, they had lied to me out of good intentions, and I was supposed to be grateful for it.

Veronica leaned back in her chair, as if she had finally gotten a burden off her shoulders. "Ian and I had a wedding. We'll host one for you, too. That will make us even," she said apathetically.

For a moment, I almost laughed out loud. That made us even?

"You still want to have your cake and eat it too." I scoffed.

Her expression darkened. "I'm attempting to preserve your dignity, Jesse."

I sneered. Everyone in this room was well aware of her and Ian's affair, and now, they were supposed to show up at our wedding.

Was that what she called dignity? Was she really that eager to make me an even bigger laughingstock?

Tears pooled in Ian's eyes, and he rasped out, "I know you hate me, but the baby's innocent, Jesse."

I looked at him, feeling a tight, suffocating ache in my chest. "What about me? Was I not innocent for seven long years?"

The color drained from his face. His lips quivered, but he was at a loss for words.

I picked up the glass of wine beside me and hurled it in Veronica's face. Wine dripped down her chin and trickled downward.

Ian sprang to his feet, shrieking my name at the top of his lungs.

Yet, my gaze remained on Veronica. "I don't want the dignity you're offering me, and I sure as hell won't grant you your fairy-tale ending, either. I wish you two bastards a lifetime of happiness together!"

Having said my piece, I grabbed my coat and walked out.

Chaos erupted behind me. Bridget called after me, someone tried to stop me, and others accused me of taking things too far. Still, I didn't look back.

Veronica had lost a lot of weight. The poise she once had seemed to have been worn away in the last two years. When I didn't turn on my heel and walk away, she seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and asked, "How have you been?""Pretty good."Veronica gazed at me, as if she couldn't quite believe it. "Are you really doing well?" "I am."The wind blew in from the end of the street, stirring the fallen leaves scattered across the ground. She was silent for a long time before uttering, "I used to think you would never really leave. I thought that no matter what I did, you'd always stay put."I listened and didn't respond, because she was right. The old me was indeed far too forgiving. However, those days were over. Veronica lowered her head and rasped out, "Is there really no chance for us anymore?"I looked at her. "It's too late."She seemed to have expected that answer, but she still froze for a moment. It took her a long while before she nodded. "I know."She paused for

Two years later, Julian and I returned home. When the plane touched down, it was still bright outside. The familiar city slowly spread out before me. I sat in my seat and looked out the window for a long time. I no longer felt suffocated like I had when I left, nor was I feeling as uneasy as I had imagined I would be. I simply felt calm. It was as if I had taken a long, winding detour, only to finally find myself back where I started. Sophia was already waiting at the airport exit. She didn't bring flowers or arrange an elaborate welcome; she simply took our luggage and handed us hot drinks. "How was the flight?"Julian clutched his cup and murmured, "Thank you."She smiled and casually opened the car door for us. Sophia didn't bring up the past in the car. She merely told us that she'd already arranged a place for us to stay, and it was close to both the hospital and the company. If we didn't like it there, we could move. There was no rush. I sat in the back seat, watchi

  • My Girlfriend, My Best Friend, Their Secret Vows   Chapter 8

After receiving a full year of treatment abroad, Julian's condition finally stabilized. He still needed to continue with rehabilitation, and he still couldn't walk normally. However, he no longer woke up with a start in the middle of the night, and he no longer trembled whenever he heard certain names. On the day of his follow-up appointment, the doctor closed his medical chart and told me, "His body will heal in time, and so will his mind." I sat in the chair and breathed a sigh of relief. I'd been stretched thin all year. I could never sleep soundly the night before every follow-up appointment.Whenever I woke up in the middle of the night, I would check on Julian to make sure his breathing was steady, his forehead wasn't too warm, and he had taken his medication on the nightstand on time. Later, when he was gradually able to take care of some things on his own, I started taking on remote work. It didn't pay much, but at least we no longer had to rely solely on the money l

  • My Girlfriend, My Best Friend, Their Secret Vows   Chapter 7

Initially, I thought that once Veronica couldn't find me, she would eventually give up as time went by. However, I had underestimated her. One day, when I returned from the drugstore with a bag of medication and reached the door of the hospital room, I saw someone outside. The woman wore a black coat, though she had lost a considerable amount of weight. I stopped in my tracks. Veronica spotted me as well. Before I could part my lips, Julian went as white as a sheet on the hospital bed. His fingers abruptly tightened around the edge of his blanket. His breathing became ragged, and his shoulders began to tremble uncontrollably. I hurried over, set the medicine down on the cabinet, and stepped directly in front of the hospital bed to shield him. "What are you doing here?" Veronica looked at me, and her Adam's apple bobbed. "I came to pay you a visit.""Now that you've seen us, you can leave." But she didn't budge. Her gaze sailed past me and landed on Julian's face. Julian

  • My Girlfriend, My Best Friend, Their Secret Vows   Chapter 6

During my first month abroad, I hardly had a full night's sleep. Julian's condition was worse than the doctors had expected. During the day, he seemed relatively calm, but at night, problems always arose. Sometimes, he would cry with his eyes closed, repeating the same words. "It's not my brother... It's not my brother..." I sat by his bedside, holding his hand and repeatedly calling his name. Yet, no matter what I did, I couldn't wake him. During the day, I accompanied him through his checkups, and at night, I kept watch over him. I was afraid to waste even a minute to wash my face. When we first arrived abroad, I wasn't fluent enough in the local language to navigate the hospital on my own. The medical terminology was the hardest part. When the doctors spoke too quickly, I could only listen and take notes. Then, I'd go back and look everything up one word at a time. Once, after a consultation ended, I sat on a bench in the corridor with a stack of documents in my arms.

  • My Girlfriend, My Best Friend, Their Secret Vows   Chapter 5

When Veronica arrived at the hospital, no one was in the hospital room. The nurse looked up at her. "You're too late. The patient's family just finished the paperwork, and the patient has been transferred to another hospital." "Where was he transferred?" "I'm afraid I can't disclose that."Veronica stood at the threshold, her expression slowly darkened. She pulled out her phone and called me. However, all that came through was the automated response. "The number you have dialed is no longer in service." Veronica then went to the place where I had lived. My landlord was crouching by the door, sorting vegetables. When she asked about me, he didn't even look up. "He already moved out. He already turned in the keys. He didn't even have time to ask for the deposit back, and he left in a rush."Veronica stood outside that door for a long time without saying a single word. …The storm didn't die down just because I had left. Initially, the internet was filled with criticism
