Chapter 4

Autor: Lena
When I went inside, Julian was still awake.

After hearing my footsteps, he slowly peeled his eyes open. The moment he saw it was me, tears pooled in his eyes.

He grasped my hand. His grip was so weak that it felt like he might slip away at any moment. "Jesse."

I hastily tightened my grip around his hand. "I'm here. Don't worry."

He stared at me for a long time before tears trickled down his cheek. "Are you a homewrecker, Jesse?"

My whole body went rigid. I wasn't afraid of what others said about me, nor did I care how much their words hurt me.

Julian, however, was different. Had he not donated his kidney to save me back then, I would've died. Because of the complications from that surgery, he could no longer live like a normal person again.

I shook my head frantically, my throat raw and aching. "No, I'm not."

He wept even harder. "But everyone online says you're clinging to someone else's wife!"

I bent down, pressed my cheek against his hand, and kept telling him over and over that it wasn't true.

Right then, the door to the hospital room was pushed open. I turned around, and my entire body instantly tensed up.

Ian had arrived with Veronica's sister, Talia Smith, in tow.

I immediately stood up and planted myself between them and the hospital bed. "What are you doing here?"

Ian clutched a fruit basket and said softly, "I'm here to clear things up. Those comments online are too harsh. I don't want Julian to get the wrong idea."

After hearing that, Julian's eyes actually lit up. He looked at Ian, as if he was clinging to the last ray of hope. "My brother isn't a homewrecker, right, Ian?"

I looked at Ian too. For a split second, I hoped he would tell the truth, even if it was just a single sentence.

Ian nodded. "That's right. He's not."

Julian visibly relaxed.

However, the very next second, Talia scoffed. "Why are you covering for him, Ian? He's a homewrecker, isn't he?"

The room went dead silent. I whipped my head around to gape at her.

Julian was stunned as well. Talia stood at the threshold and said casually, "My sister's legally married to you, yet he still won't let her go. If he's not a homewrecker, then what is he?"

Julian blanched. He stared at Ian intently, as if he was waiting for him to deny it.

Ian, however, merely stood there. His lips were pale, and he didn't utter a single word.

At that moment, I could only watch as the light in Julian's eyes slowly shattered.

The heart monitor began to wail. His breathing became erratic, his chest heaved violently, and his face instantly turned ghastly pale.

"Julian!" I lunged forward to press the call button before turning around and shoving Ian away. "Get out! Who told you to come here?"

The fruit basket crashed to the ground, scattering fruit all over the floor.

Ian stumbled back a couple of steps, and the color drained from his face. "Listen to me. That's not what Talia meant, Jesse!"

I stared at him long and hard, my whole body shaking like a leaf. "In that case, why didn't you deny it? Why did you just stand there and watch him collapse without saying a single word?"

By the time the nurses and doctors rushed in, the hospital room was already in complete chaos.

I called for the doctor while pushing them out. "Get out. All of you, get the hell out!"

Just then, Veronica arrived. The moment the door swung open, I thought she would at least take a look at Julian.

Yet, the first thing she did upon rushing in was to support Ian. "Are you okay?"

Tears instantly welled up in his eyes, and he seized her arm. "I only came here to clear things up, but he shoved me out of the blue, Veronica."

Veronica immediately shifted her attention toward me, and her expression hardened. "Enough's enough, Jesse! Ian came to check on your brother out of the kindness of his heart. Besides, I'm pregnant. Do you have to make a scene until I get stressed out too?"

I stood beside the hospital bed, and when I heard those words, something inside me suddenly went hollow. Julian was being resuscitated, surrounded by doctors and nurses while the heart monitor blared nonstop.

Yet, she couldn't see any of it. The only thing that mattered was her and Ian's unborn child.

I looked at her, and all of a sudden, I didn't feel like uttering another word. I raised my hand and pointed toward the door, my voice so hoarse that it barely sounded like my own. "Get out. All of you, scram!"

The doctor also ordered all unauthorized personnel to leave in a stern voice. The ward finally quieted down.

After a long, desperate effort to resuscitate Julian, he was finally pulled back from death's door.

I sat beside his bed and stayed with him until well into the night before he came to. The moment his eyes fluttered open and met mine, tears spilled over.

I leaned down and held him tightly. "Let's leave."

Julian trembled softly in my arms.

I stroked his hair, my voice barely above a whisper. "I'll take you away. We'll sell our old house and leave this city behind for good."

Julian wept and nodded. "I'll leave with you, Jesse."

…

In the days that followed, I barely slept.

A week later, we finished all the procedures.

Before the plane took off, I took one last look at my phone. There were no new messages. I snapped my old SIM card in half and never looked back.

The hospital refunded the remaining treatment fees to the original account, with a simple remark. "The patient has been transferred to another hospital."

Veronica was at her wedding venue when she saw the message. She frantically dialed my number, but no one answered.

Veronica had lost a lot of weight. The poise she once had seemed to have been worn away in the last two years. When I didn't turn on my heel and walk away, she seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and asked, "How have you been?""Pretty good."Veronica gazed at me, as if she couldn't quite believe it. "Are you really doing well?" "I am."The wind blew in from the end of the street, stirring the fallen leaves scattered across the ground. She was silent for a long time before uttering, "I used to think you would never really leave. I thought that no matter what I did, you'd always stay put."I listened and didn't respond, because she was right. The old me was indeed far too forgiving. However, those days were over. Veronica lowered her head and rasped out, "Is there really no chance for us anymore?"I looked at her. "It's too late."She seemed to have expected that answer, but she still froze for a moment. It took her a long while before she nodded. "I know."She paused for

Two years later, Julian and I returned home. When the plane touched down, it was still bright outside. The familiar city slowly spread out before me. I sat in my seat and looked out the window for a long time. I no longer felt suffocated like I had when I left, nor was I feeling as uneasy as I had imagined I would be. I simply felt calm. It was as if I had taken a long, winding detour, only to finally find myself back where I started. Sophia was already waiting at the airport exit. She didn't bring flowers or arrange an elaborate welcome; she simply took our luggage and handed us hot drinks. "How was the flight?"Julian clutched his cup and murmured, "Thank you."She smiled and casually opened the car door for us. Sophia didn't bring up the past in the car. She merely told us that she'd already arranged a place for us to stay, and it was close to both the hospital and the company. If we didn't like it there, we could move. There was no rush. I sat in the back seat, watchi

After receiving a full year of treatment abroad, Julian's condition finally stabilized. He still needed to continue with rehabilitation, and he still couldn't walk normally. However, he no longer woke up with a start in the middle of the night, and he no longer trembled whenever he heard certain names. On the day of his follow-up appointment, the doctor closed his medical chart and told me, "His body will heal in time, and so will his mind." I sat in the chair and breathed a sigh of relief. I'd been stretched thin all year. I could never sleep soundly the night before every follow-up appointment.Whenever I woke up in the middle of the night, I would check on Julian to make sure his breathing was steady, his forehead wasn't too warm, and he had taken his medication on the nightstand on time. Later, when he was gradually able to take care of some things on his own, I started taking on remote work. It didn't pay much, but at least we no longer had to rely solely on the money l

  • My Girlfriend, My Best Friend, Their Secret Vows   Chapter 7

Initially, I thought that once Veronica couldn't find me, she would eventually give up as time went by. However, I had underestimated her. One day, when I returned from the drugstore with a bag of medication and reached the door of the hospital room, I saw someone outside. The woman wore a black coat, though she had lost a considerable amount of weight. I stopped in my tracks. Veronica spotted me as well. Before I could part my lips, Julian went as white as a sheet on the hospital bed. His fingers abruptly tightened around the edge of his blanket. His breathing became ragged, and his shoulders began to tremble uncontrollably. I hurried over, set the medicine down on the cabinet, and stepped directly in front of the hospital bed to shield him. "What are you doing here?" Veronica looked at me, and her Adam's apple bobbed. "I came to pay you a visit.""Now that you've seen us, you can leave." But she didn't budge. Her gaze sailed past me and landed on Julian's face. Julian

During my first month abroad, I hardly had a full night's sleep. Julian's condition was worse than the doctors had expected. During the day, he seemed relatively calm, but at night, problems always arose. Sometimes, he would cry with his eyes closed, repeating the same words. "It's not my brother... It's not my brother..." I sat by his bedside, holding his hand and repeatedly calling his name. Yet, no matter what I did, I couldn't wake him. During the day, I accompanied him through his checkups, and at night, I kept watch over him. I was afraid to waste even a minute to wash my face. When we first arrived abroad, I wasn't fluent enough in the local language to navigate the hospital on my own. The medical terminology was the hardest part. When the doctors spoke too quickly, I could only listen and take notes. Then, I'd go back and look everything up one word at a time. Once, after a consultation ended, I sat on a bench in the corridor with a stack of documents in my arms.

  • My Girlfriend, My Best Friend, Their Secret Vows   Chapter 5

When Veronica arrived at the hospital, no one was in the hospital room. The nurse looked up at her. "You're too late. The patient's family just finished the paperwork, and the patient has been transferred to another hospital." "Where was he transferred?" "I'm afraid I can't disclose that."Veronica stood at the threshold, her expression slowly darkened. She pulled out her phone and called me. However, all that came through was the automated response. "The number you have dialed is no longer in service." Veronica then went to the place where I had lived. My landlord was crouching by the door, sorting vegetables. When she asked about me, he didn't even look up. "He already moved out. He already turned in the keys. He didn't even have time to ask for the deposit back, and he left in a rush."Veronica stood outside that door for a long time without saying a single word. …The storm didn't die down just because I had left. Initially, the internet was filled with criticism
