Cassian tore through the sanctuary doors expecting to stop a childish prank, only to find a signed marriage certificate in his half-brother’s hand.

The heavy mahogany doors slammed against the stone frame, the thunderous crack echoing off the cathedral’s vaulted ceiling. Heads turned in unison as Cassian strode down the center aisle, his tuxedo disheveled, his breathing heavy and ragged.

"Serena!" His voice sliced through the stunned silence, harsh and demanding. "What the hell is this insanity?"

Serena didn't flinch. She stood on the top step of the altar, her spine straight, watching him approach with cold detachment. Beside her, Asher remained still, a shadow of quiet power.

Cassian took the marble steps two at a time, his face flushed with rage. He ignored the priest, ignored the whispering crowd, and focused entirely on the woman in the ivory silk dress.

"Enough of this ridiculous game," Cassian spat, reaching out to seize her hand. "You've made your point. You're angry. Now get your coat and let's get out of here before the press turns this into a circus."

"Don't touch me," Serena said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried a lethal clarity that made Cassian freeze inches from her skin.

"Serena, look at me!" Cassian demanded, his chest heaving. "I'm here. I told you I was dealing with Liora—it was business, damn it! I was securing the Voss deal for our future. You're throwing a hysterical tantrum, over forty minutes!"

"Sixty-seven, Cassian," Serena corrected. She raised her left hand, letting the afternoon light strike the dark gold signet ring resting securely on her finger. "And it isn't a tantrum. It's a marriage."

Cassian stared at the ring, his jaw tightening until a muscle leaped in his cheek. He shook his head, a bitter laugh escaping his lips. "A marriage? To him? You think signing a piece of paper with an outcast makes you his wife? This isn't valid, Serena. It's a joke!"

"It is legally binding, Cassian," the priest interjected, holding the official registry. "The vows were exchanged and witnessed."

"Shut up!" Cassian roared, wheeling on the priest before snapping his eyes back to Serena. "You belong to me! We've spent three years building this life. You don't just hand yourself to the family trash because you're throwing a fit!"

He lunged forward, reaching aggressively to grab Serena's wrist and drag her down the altar steps.

Before his fingers could touch her, Asher stepped smoothly into his path.

Asher’s broad frame completely blocked Cassian’s view of Serena. He stood like an immovable wall of dark tailored wool, towering over his younger half-brother.

"Step back, Cassian," Asher said, his low baritone vibrating through the quiet space.

"Get out of my way, Asher!" Cassian sneered, glaring up at the man his mother had driven out seven years ago. "This has nothing to do with you! She’s using you to get to me, you pathetic bastard. Do you really think she wants you?"

"You have no idea what I'm capable of, Cassian," Asher said, his gaze fixed and unreadable. "Don't make the mistake of finding out today."

"She’s my fiancé!"

"She was your fiancé," Serena corrected, stepping out from behind Asher, her eyes burning like polished steel. "Until you decided that lying between Liora Voss’s legs was more important than standing at this altar."

A wave of sharp, horrified gasps rippled through the front pews. Julian lowered his head into his hand, while several high-society matriarchs covered their mouths in shock.

Cassian’s face was drained of color. "Serena... shut your mouth."

"Why?" Serena asked, her voice dangerously calm as she stepped closer to the edge of the altar. "Should I hide the truth to save your precious reputation? Should I pretend you were stuck in traffic, rather than in a suite at the Plaza, fucking Liora and telling me to do my worst?”

"It was a setup!" Cassian hissed, glancing frantically toward the whispering guests. "She ambushed me, Serena! I was trying to leave—"

"You didn't sound like that though, Cassian," Serena interrupted, her voice striking him like a blade. "You didn't just abandon me. You humiliated me. You thought I was so weak, so desperately in love with you, that I would sit in this room like an obedient fool and wait for whatever scraps of time you decided to bring back to me."

"I love you!" Cassian pleaded, his arrogant composure finally cracking into raw panic. "Serena, please. We can fix this. We'll leave Manhattan tonight. We'll annul this—"

"You made your choice, Cassian," Serena said softly, looking down at the dark gold ring on her finger. "Now live with it."

She met his gaze, her expression completely devoid of remorse. Without waiting for his response, she placed her hand on Asher's offered arm. Her grip on his coat was firm, steady, and devoid of fear.

"Let's go, Asher," she said softly.

Asher guided her down the side steps of the altar, completely bypassing Cassian, who stood frozen in the center aisle, pale, sweating, and trembling with uncontainable rage. The guests parted in shock as Asher and Serena walked side by side toward the heavy rear exit, their movements synchronized and steady.

"Look at them..."

"Is she really staying with Asher?"

"The Blackwood family is going to tear itself apart..."

The hushed voices faded as Asher pushed open the side exit doors, plunging them into the bright, blinding glare of the afternoon sun.

Flashbulbs detonated instantly. A wall of dozens of paparazzi surged past the velvet ropes, shouting over one another as they shoved microphones toward Serena's face.

"Miss Vale! Where is Mr? Blackwood?"

"Is it true you just married Asher Blackwood?”

“Did you know he was with Liora Voss?”

Asher stepped between Serena and the first surge of cameras, one hand settling firmly at her back as he guided her toward the waiting black armored SUV. He used his imposing frame to shield her from the chaotic crowd.

"Keep moving," Asher murmured near her ear, his deep voice grounded amidst the roaring street noise.

Serena kept her chin high, refusing to hide her face as the cameras captured every inch of her custom gown, her calm expression, and the dark signet ring resting prominently on her hand.

They reached the vehicle, and Asher ushered her into the leather interior before sliding in beside her and shutting out the noise of the street. The driver immediately pulled away from the curb, leaving the swarming media in their dust.

Inside the quiet cabin, the adrenaline that had carried Serena through the altar confrontation began to cool. She looked out the tinted window at the passing city skyline, her heart beating with cold, absolute certainty.

Back inside the cathedral's private holding room, Cassian slammed his fist into the antique oak table, sending a crystal glass shattering across the floor.

"Find my lawyers!" Cassian screamed at Julian, who stood near the door looking at him with pity. "Find them now! I want that marriage invalidated! I want Asher arrested for trespassing!"

His phone, resting on the velvet couch, began to vibrate violently.

Cassian snatched it up, expecting his mother or the Blackwood family attorneys.

Instead, a high-priority alert notification from the Manhattan Financial Gazette flashed across the screen, followed instantly by an official press statement from Vale Maison’s public relations network.

Cassian stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM VALE MAISON ENTERPRISES: Effective immediately, Serena Vale has ended her personal and professional relationship with Cassian Blackwood. Any future business dealings between Vale Maison and Blackwood-affiliated entities will be subject to independent review.

Below the text was a high-resolution photograph taken less than three minutes ago on the cathedral steps: Serena Vale, radiant and unbothered, her hand resting over Asher Blackwood's chest, wearing his ring for the entire world to see.

Cassian stared at the photograph.

Serena was smiling. Her hand rested over Asher’s chest. His ring gleamed beneath the camera flashes.

And for the first time that day, Cassian understood something he hadn’t believed possible.

Serena wasn’t waiting for him anymore.

The quiet late-afternoon sun warmed the high windows of the study, casting long, gold ribbons across the dark floorboards. Outside, Manhattan moved at its usual frantic pace, but inside the penthouse, the air felt slow and calm.Zora was still months away from arriving. Serena sat on the comfortable sofa with her feet tucked beneath her, wearing a soft cream knit dress that hugged her round, six-month bump.Across the coffee table, Asher set down a blue leather folder. He didn't open it like a corporate presentation this time. He simply laid it flat and looked at her, his dark eyes warm and relaxed."I revised the schedule for the next three months," Asher said, his low voice filling the quiet room. "Doctor visits, Vale Maison’s final spring checks, Blackthorne’s travel limits, and our home preparations."Serena reached over, pulling the folder toward her. She flipped through the pages with a raised eyebrow. "Asher... this is only three pages long. Where are the colo

Evelyn poured silver-filtered tea into a bone china cup, the sharp, floral aroma of bergamot rising into the quiet air of her townhouse drawing room. Rain tapped a steady, rhythmic pattern against the tall street-facing glass.Across the mahogany table sat Mara Forbes. She had not removed her dark coat, and her hands rested flat on her lap, her eyes cool and unreadable as she looked around the velvet-draped room."I appreciate you coming on short notice, Mara," Evelyn said smoothly, setting the silver teapot back on its saucer with a delicate clink. "I know my son can be difficult to manage, especially when his pride is wounded."Mara didn't touch her cup. "Cassian told me you wanted to set up a trust for the baby. He also said you had specific terms."Evelyn smiled softly, leaning back against her armchair. She smoothed the front of her silk blouse, keeping her tone warm and reasonable. "I am a grandmother thinking about the future, Mara. Nothing more. Cassian’s cur

"If we drop the hand-woven silk coats from the opening segment, the entire narrative of the spring line falls apart," Serena said, her voice firm as she tapped her pen against the glass table. The main conference room at Vale Maison smelled of warm coffee, freshly printed line sheets, and the crisp, cold air leaking through the high Manhattan windows. At six months pregnant, Serena sat at the head of the table in a soft burgundy dress, her hand resting over her rounded bump.Marcus rubbed his forehead with a heavy sigh. "I know, Serena. But Continental Luxury just called from Paris. Their main factory in Lyon had a power grid failure. The custom silk runs are delayed by two full weeks. If we wait for them, we miss the buyer showcase in Milan.""And if we replace the silk with standard satin, the collection looks cheap," Serena countered sharply, looking around the room at her design leads. "Every fashion column in the city is already watching us. They think because I announced my preg

Four months had melted away into the crisp, biting cold of late winter, taking Serena’s morning sickness with them and leaving behind a soft, unmistakable curve beneath her cashmere sweaters. At twenty weeks pregnant, the quiet uncertainty of the early days had transformed into a steady, daily rhythm. The snow had started falling over Manhattan early that evening, covering the big glass windows of the study in soft white. Inside, the room was warm, smelling of cedarwood and hot tea.Serena sat with her legs crossed on the big rug, surrounded by paper spread all over the floor. At five months pregnant, her belly was now a soft, round bump under her dark sweater."Asher, this isn't a list of baby names," Serena said, holding up a thick sheet as he walked into the room carrying two hot mugs. "This looks like a business report."Asher set the mugs on the coffee table and knelt beside her on the rug. "It’s a list of choices. I sorted them by where they come from, how they

After the public pregnancy announcement, Cassian had spent forty-eight hours trying to erase the image of Asher and Serena from his mind.He had failed. Every time he opened a browser, glanced at a newspaper on a diner counter, or passed a newsstand on Lexington, their faces were there—smiling, composed, and celebrated by a city that had discarded him. Comparison was a poison he knew he shouldn't drink, but watching Asher build a bright, public future made Cassian’s own cramped reality feel suffocating. His phone buzzed on the coffee table. A text from Mara.We need to finalize the schedule and expenses for the next few months. Are you available at three?Cassian stared at the message, swallowed his pride, and typed back a single word: Yes.They met at a quiet, unpretentious café off Third Avenue. Mara was already sitting in a corner booth, a notebook and a neat folder open before her. She looked composed, her dark hair pulled back, completely unbothered by the r

A few days had passed since the announcement went live, and the initial wave of media noise had finally settled into a manageable background hum.Asher returned to the penthouse just as the sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the living room walls in soft shades of amber and rose. He set his leather briefcase on the entryway table and unbuttoned his suit jacket, stepping quietly onto the dark hardwood floors. In the sunroom overlooking the river, Serena sat on the plush velvet rug surrounded by floor plans, fabric swatches, and architectural sketches. She had a pencil tucked behind her ear and a cup of warm tea resting on a tray beside her.Asher walked over, leaning against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets. "I see you've taken over the floor."Serena looked up, a bright, welcoming smile touching her lips. "I’m reviewing options for the room down the hall. The one we agreed would make the most sense for the nursery."Asher walked into the room
