Chapter 2

Author: Roaring River
Mom raised her hand and slapped Kendrick hard across the face. "You weren't this desperate back when our families were social equals, Kendrick. You've suddenly learned how to kneel and beg now that you're bankrupt and on the verge of death, huh?"

Kendrick kneeled in the pouring rain, refusing to leave until he saw me.

I allowed him in since the doctor said he would likely die if he didn't return to the hospital.

I was sitting on Daniel's lap while he was standing there in a miserable state. I slowly read aloud the love letter he had written me, saying, "I'll provide you with the best future, Jasmine."

I let out a derisive laugh and tore his heartfelt letter to pieces. "You can't even afford your medical bills, Mr. Fisher. What kind of future could you possibly give me? Do you intend to give me your bloodied lungs, your failing heart, or that pocket change from moving bricks at a construction site?

"You can still walk out of here alive if you get lost right now; otherwise, you'll be leaving on a stretcher. Do you get what I'm saying, you pathetic loser?"

Kendrick raised his head and stared straight at me, his gaze terrifyingly chilly and his voice incredibly hoarse. "You'd better remember what you said today, Jasmine Lawson. I'll make you regret this one day."

He turned and left with bloodshot eyes, his frail silhouette unsteady in the downpour, stumbling repeatedly and nearly collapsing.

I was already completely numb with pain; I felt nothing at all, even as my fingernails dug deep into my palms. I yelled after him as he walked away, "I'll be waiting for you, then! I'd like to see just how long your miserable life can last!"

That sentence marked our final parting.

Kendrick hated me so much that he fought desperately to survive. He seized every single chance, and within four years, he successfully restored the Fisher family to its former glory, coming back even stronger than before.

He returned to Brindlehow once he was armed with enough capital to destroy the entire Lawson family.

It was said that Kendrick's first order of business upon his return was to exact revenge on the Lawson family, and now everyone was waiting on the sidelines, looking forward to the unfolding drama.

In the meantime, the head of security scurried over to Kendrick with a fawning smile and said, "T-That madwoman..."

Kendrick gestured for him to be quiet, his black overcoat brushing against the crushed lilies on the ground. He came to a stop three steps before the coffin, casting a shadow over Mom's hunched back.

I looked at him in panic, fearing that he would retaliate against Mom.

Mom suddenly looked up, her clouded eyes looking frighteningly bright. "K-Kenny?"

Those around immediately fell silent after hearing that long-forgotten nickname that hadn't been used for four years.

Mom's filthy sleeves were pulled back slightly to reveal needle marks, evidence of the forced sedatives administered at the asylum. She still smiled like a child catching sight of candy, asking, "You brought Jasmine back, didn't you?"

She pointed her emaciated finger toward the empty coffin and said, "Oh, wait. Jasmine is asleep right now. She's right here—right inside this coffin..."

Kendrick's pupils dilated sharply as he rushed toward the coffin in a few quick strides. "Did Jasmine really die?"

Mom smiled dazedly and reached out to pat the coffin. "Jasmine is right here. She's wearing her red dress right now. She looks so beautiful!"

Kendrick's breathing hitched. He pushed his hands forward in a panic, causing the coffin to crash heavily onto the ground and kick up a cloud of dust. He froze slightly after noticing that the coffin was empty, his breathing gradually easing.

Mom beamed with joy as she began talking to the empty space around her. "Kenny came to see you, Jasmine. You must be very happy now, right?"

Those around immediately grew restless, their whispers breaking out all around.

"That crazy old woman is acting up again. That coffin is obviously empty, yet she insists someone's in there!"

"Get her sent to a psychiatric hospital at once! She's such a harbinger of misfortune!"

That coffin was empty because my body hadn't been placed inside yet. That funeral was taking place that day, while the burial itself was set for the day after tomorrow.

Kendrick continued, "You were the one responsible for arranging the shirts in the wardrobe every morning, for turning off the coffee machine in the middle of the night, and for putting away all the documents in the study!"I felt my heart nearly stop—if a ghost could even have a heartbeat. I realized then that he had actually noticed all those subtle things I did without even thinking. I then laughed through my tears, exclaiming, "You're such a big dummy for only noticing it now, Kendrick!"Kendrick suddenly laughed through his tears, looking like a kid who just got a piece of candy. "I heard that, Jasmine."I didn't know how much time I had left with Kendrick. I could feel my soul fading by the day, to the point where even picking up a pen took multiple attempts. I still welcomed every single extra day I could get, though.Kendrick began learning how to pinpoint exactly where I was. He would suddenly look at my empty chair in the middle of business meetings and cock his brow sligh

Kendrick trembled as he took out an old wallet from his inner suit pocket and carefully removed a faded photo of the two of us taken at the amusement park before the SATs. I was beaming at the camera while he was secretly staring at the side of my face.He gently traced his fingers across my smiling face in the photo. "You said you wanted to make me live to a hundred, but without you, how am I supposed to get through these 50 years, Jasmine?"It was raining heavily, causing the photo to be soaked. Kendrick frantically wiped it with his sleeve, but he only ended up smudging it further. He suddenly went rigid, staring at the blurred photo. He suddenly froze in place as he stared at the distorted image on the photo, letting out a broken, tearful laugh."You are always like this, leaving whenever you say so, leaving at a moment's notice, without even leaving a single intact photo for me…"In the meantime, the distant rumble of an engine echoed through the air as Yvonne drove away.Ken

I wished so badly that Kendrick could have just lived his life without ever finding out the truth.Mom stumbled over to the memorial altar and picked up the stale box of cotton candy nougats. "Jasmine was still holding onto this the day she died…"There was a crumpled piece of paper inside that box of nougats. "You must live a long and healthy life, Kendrick."Kendrick's hands shook as he unfolded the slip of paper. He suddenly broke into a violent coughing fit. He spat a mouthful of blood across the paper, smudging the handwriting. He then fell to his knees, his voice completely cracking while sobbing. "I've come back too late, Jasmine…"I was eventually cremated and placed into a small urn. I was laid to rest while it was drizzling.Kendrick collapsed in front of my tombstone, his black suit completely drenched by the rain as he remained completely motionless like a statue. He repeatedly traced my name on the tombstone, the pads of his fingers wearing down to blood, the rain car

It was as if time had frozen for me for four years, with only the heart transplant scar on my chest standing as a brutal reminder of the truth.Kendrick dropped to his knees before the refrigerated coffin, the sound of his knees smashing against the floor tiles making everyone shudder. His fingers trembled as they brushed against the glass coffin lid, but curled up at the exact instant they were about to touch my face."Jasmine!" Kendrick's voice cracked and rasped, as if it were forced out with difficulty from his shattered lungs. In the meantime, the Lawson family quietly withdrew, no longer pressing for my cremation.Kendrick knelt there all by himself. He went without food or water for an entire week, watching over the coffin like a statue.I hovered beside him, watching him visibly wither. His once immaculate hair now hung loosely over his brow, and his expensive suit was now crumpled and disheveled. I couldn't help but feel my heart ache, though there was nothing I could do

Kendrick stared down at the torn death certificate in his grip, his chest heaving. He scoffed, his gaze turning chillingly intense. "You're trying to fool me again, huh? You're still putting on a show, even now?"He slowly shredded the death certificate, letting the pieces fall from his grip. However, the name "Jasmine Lawson" on those pieces felt like a branding iron, causing his hands to tremble. In that instant, everyone in the room held their breath. It was obvious to everyone that Kendrick was on the verge of a breakdown. It was quite odd, though, as the Lawsons remained completely still and silent. Their expressions held no fear, just profound grief. Mom even managed a weak smile, though it was far more devastating than watching her cry."You bunch of lunatics!" Kendrick hissed through gritted teeth, then turned on his heel and stormed out.It was the following day when Fisher Group made a massive public announcement about Kendrick's engagement to Yvonne. Those prominent fam

Daniel gulped nervously and shuffled closer, rubbing his hands together ingratiatingly. "I already helped you get back at Jasmine. Do I not deserve something in return, Mr. Fisher?"Kendrick crushed the wine glass in his hand, spilling wine onto the carpet. He stared at Daniel with a chilling smile before saying, "You must be quite drunk, Mr. Ziegler. Who is this Jasmine? Is she someone I should know?"I instantly felt tears welling up in my eyes. I still felt a wave of grief washing over me after hearing him say that, even though my heart had already shattered a million times before this.Kendrick pulled a wad of cash from his inner suit pocket and casually threw it on the floor. Those bills were scattered across the floor, a few landing right at Daniel's feet.In that instant, the snickering of the guests throughout the venue came to a sudden halt.Daniel's expression contorted, slowly dropping to his knees. He licked his lips, his eyes locked on the pile of cash. "You're absol
