chapter 7 - Something is Missing

Whenever she closed her eyes, she heard the sound over and over again. Whirr... click... whirr It didn't sound loud at this point. But she could hear it clearly. She turned to the left side of the bed and pulled a blanket over her head. She acted like it would stop but it didn't. It was inside her. Her fingers moved towards her chest region. "Why do you sound like that..." she whispered. She could not understand anymore. The more she thought about it, the scarier she became. In the morning, she already made up her mind about going to the hospital. Her eyes were heavy when she woke up. This time, she wasn't asking politely. She was going to force out answers. Anna walked into the hospital with a different energy this time. She was no longer afraid. She went straight to the front desk. "Good morning" she greeted the nurse at the receptionist. "Morning" "I would like to see the doctor that handled my surgery." She said, "The nurse looked at her. "Did you book an appointment with him?" "No." "I'm sorry, you have to..." "I'm not leaving," Anna cut in. She spoke in a calm voice but she was quite confident. The nurse paused and studied her face. "I'll check," the nurse said finally. Upstairs, the doctor looked at Anna's file. "Is she back?" he asked "She is, and she is asking for you." The doctor exhaled. "She should not be here... she can't be here." The room remained silent. "You know what... bring her in" the doctor Said finally Anna came into the office after some time. The doctor gave her a short smile like everything was normal. "How are you feeling today?" he asked. She remained standing "I want the truth" The doctor didn't stop smiling. "You are fine. The surgery was successful." Anna gave a quick laugh. "What do you mean successful!" she asked. "My mother is dead." The doctor's expression hardened. "I'm sorry for your loss..." "Stop it." Anna cut in The strange rhythm started again "I hear it," she said quietly "Hear what?" "My heart" The room went still. "It doesn't sound normal. It doesn't feel normal. and you keep telling that there is nothing wrong." The doctor leaned back. "After surgery..." "No" She cut in again. "This is not normal. ok?" It is something else.". She looked at him with intent. "What did you do to me? Everywhere was quiet. The doctor gave a grin. "You are imagining things," he said. Anna gave him a stern stir. Then she nodded slowly. "Okay." She turned and walked out. This time, she did not leave the hospital. Anna moved slowly down the hall. She looked at everything carefully. rooms, people, everything. Something was off here. Whirs... click. Whirs... "Not again." she whispered. She began to hear the sound getting louder and louder as she walked so she stopped walking. That pull. That Same feeling. She started walking again at a very slow rate. Then she stopped. Her breath caught. She moved her head slightly. He was there again. standing near the window. He kept on watching her calmly. Anna's chest reacted immediately faster this time. "What is wrong with me!" she whispered Adrian didn't move. Her heart reacted again. stronger than it did last time. Like it recognized her. His eyes stayed on her. every movement she made. She looked weaker today. Something was wrong. He took a step forward. Anna stepped back immediately out of fear. "No," she said under her breath. She turned and walked away very quickly.
