Summer's Pov

The equipment room thing should not have affected me as much as it did.

I told myself that on the ride back to school, standing in the hallway after Tyler walked me to first period, sitting through a lecture I retained absolutely nothing from. I told myself it was fine, that I had handled it, that mouthing those two words at Crew and walking away was the most dignified exit I could have managed under the circumstances and I should be proud of myself.

I was not proud of myself.

Crew’s PovSummer’s face when we landed was worth every minute of the flight. She came down the steps of the jet slowly, one hand on the rail, and then stopped at the bottom and just looked around. The air was different here, cooler, and the sky was doing something with the late afternoon light that made everything look slightly unreal.“This place is beautiful,” she said quietly, like she was saying it to herself.Gray stood beside her and said nothing, which meant he agreed completely.I let them have the moment and went to sort out the cars.***The hotel was the kind of place Richard booked without asking about price. Our suites were on the same floor, Summer in her own room between ours, and we had maybe two hours before we needed to be at the venue.Gray came to my room while I was going through my gear.He sat on the edge of the chair by the window and watched me check everything with the calm patience he had that I had stopped finding strange.“You are going to win,” he said.

  • My Hockey Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 145

Summer’s POVI was standing in the middle of my room surrounded by open bags and I could not remember what I had already packed and what I had not. This kept happening. I would put something in the bag and then get distracted thinking about everything and come back to the bag and have to check from the beginning. I had been packing for forty minutes and was approximately halfway done.Officially dating three people.I said it in my head the way you test something to see if it breaks and it did not break. It just sat there, slightly unbelievable and completely real at the same time. We had talked about the public arrangement and agreed on keeping things quiet for now. If anyone saw her out, she was with Crew. Step-siblings who were close. Strange to some people but not impossible to explain. The other two stayed in the background until the moment was right and nobody had decided when that moment was yet.It was manageable. It was actually manageable. What was also real was that Crew an

  • My Hockey Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 144

Summer’s PovI was still staring at the card when I heard the garden door open.Gray came out first. Dark suit, completely calm, like he had not just orchestrated whatever this was. Then Tyler, hands in his pockets, that specific smile he had that I had known for years. Then Crew, jacket open, looking like he had somewhere between proud and nervous which was the most unusual combination I had ever seen on his face.I looked at all three of them.“What is this,” I said. “What is all of this. How did you even – when did you – “They sat down at the table like I had not said anything. The servers reappeared from somewhere and started setting plates and filling glasses and moving with the quiet efficiency of people who had been briefed thoroughly.“Guys,” I said.“Stop thinking so hard,” Gray said. “Just eat.”I closed my mouth. The food was extraordinary. Of course it was. I could taste Gray’s hand in the preparation even with the servers presenting it, the specific way he balanced flavo

  • My Hockey Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 143

Summer’s POVThe whole ride back my mind would not settle.Crew and Gray had gone to Tyler. They had actually gone to Tyler and told him to tell me. I kept turning that over and it kept landing differently every time. Either it was the most unexpectedly generous thing anyone had ever done for me or it was the strangest thing that had ever happened in the history of human relationships. Possibly it was both.Tyler pulled up outside the house and stopped the engine.“Thank you for the ride,” I said.I reached for the door.“Summer.”I stopped.“Can I kiss you?”I looked at him. His eyes were completely steady and completely honest and had been both of those things for as long as I had known him and I had somehow spent years looking at them and not fully understanding what I was looking at.I reached over and grabbed his shirt and pulled him toward me.The kiss was nothing like Crew and nothing like Gray.It was Tyler. It was years of being known by someone, of being seen without having

  • My Hockey Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 142

Summer’s POVThe hallway noise was still going all around us and Tyler was looking at me waiting for an answer and Ruby had just said the one thing I had been hoping nobody would say out loud in front of him.Tyler turned to me. “Is that true? You were going to give them an answer today?”“I – yes.”Kayla looked between all of us with the expression of someone who had arrived in the middle of a film and was trying to catch up. “Wait, what is happening right now?”“Don’t worry,” Ruby said, already moving. She grabbed Kayla’s arm with the efficiency of someone executing a plan she had prepared in advance. “You and I are going to a café and I am going to fill you in on absolutely everything.” She looked at me over her shoulder. “I’m filling her in, right?”“Do I have a choice?”“No.” She was already dragging Kayla down the corridor. “Tyler, take care of my best friend. Summer, go talk to your other best friend. Bye.”And then they were gone.Tyler and I stood in the emptying hallway look

  • My Hockey Bully Stepbrother    Chapter 141

Summer’s PovThe last few weeks had been nothing but exams.Hard ones, easy ones, ones that sat somewhere uncomfortable in the middle. The romantic energy that had been building in the house before exams started had gone completely quiet without anyone formally announcing that it would. There was simply no room for it. Every evening was notes and past papers and revision and Crew coming home from hockey practice still in his gear and sitting straight down at the table to read because nationals were coming and he was somehow managing both at the same time without completely falling apart. No parties. No social media. Barely any phone time at all except for the calls from Richard and her mom checking in every few days.Ruby had started sleeping over because she did not want Summer to be the only girl in a house full of boys during exam period and also because Ruby studied better with company and this arrangement suited both of them perfectly. This morning the four of us were at the brea
