Chapter 1

I sat on the edge of the bed, clutching the crumpled honeymoon itinerary in my hands.

I'd spent three sleepless nights putting it together.

A day out on the water. An evening watching the sunset. A candlelit dinner at the cliffside restaurant. A private honeymoon photoshoot—just the two of us.

I'd drawn a tiny little heart next to every item.

When Justin Hudson first saw it, he'd laughed. "Zoe, why does our honeymoon itinerary look like something an elementary school kid made for a field trip?"

My cheeks had burned as I replied, "This is our once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon. Aren't you excited?"

He'd pulled me into his arms and smiled. "Of course I am. Nothing matters more than my wife."

I'd believed every word.

But now, my mother-in-law Karen Cruz's suitcase sat open beside our bed. The honeymoon suite I'd booked had become a family room. And the itinerary filled with plans for "just the two of us" had turned into nothing more than just a cruel joke.

Karen leaned against the headboard, massaging her temples. "Oh, my back is killing me. Flying always leaves me sore. Zoe, would you mind going down to the front desk and asking if they have a hot water bottle?"

Justin got to his feet. "I'll go, Mom."

Karen stopped him. "Don't fuss over me. Let Zoe go. She's young—she'll be much faster."

I didn't move.

Justin frowned. "Zoe, didn't you hear what Mom just said?"

My stomach sank. "I was on that same seven-hour flight," I said quietly. "I'm exhausted too."

He froze. In the past, I rarely pushed back. I'd always rush to explain myself first. But for the first time, I realized I didn't want to explain anymore.

Karen chuckled. "Oh, forget it. It's your honeymoon, after all. Of course, Zoe comes first. I'm just an old woman. I can handle a little discomfort."

She turned away and coughed twice.

Justin's face darkened instantly. "Zoe, after everything my mom just said, what more do you want?"

I met his gaze. "What did I do?"

"She's family," he said, lowering his voice. "She raised me all by herself. Do you have any idea how hard that was? She's come all this way with us, so can't you show her a little kindness?"

A suffocating weight settled in my chest. Without another word, I picked up the room key and headed down to the front desk

"We don't have any hot water bottles," the receptionist said.

I ended up walking three blocks to a nearby convenience store before I finally found some heat packs and a cup of hot chocolate.

By the time I returned to the room, Karen was already lying in bed. Justin sat next to her, showing her photos on his phone.

Karen's eyes crinkled with a smile. "If only Hannah had come along. With a figure like hers, she'd look absolutely stunning in those honeymoon photos. You know she's always had a soft spot for you.

She added, "Sharon always says she likes how family-oriented you are. She'd have complete peace of mind if Hannah married you."

Justin chuckled. "Mom, that was years ago."

I stood frozen in the doorway. For a moment, I felt less like the bride and more like a hotel employee who'd wandered into the wrong room.

I set the hot chocolate on the table. "I'm back."

Justin finally looked up. "What took you so long?"

"It was a long walk," I replied.

Karen quickly pushed herself up. "Thank you for going through all that trouble, Zoe. Justin, thank your wife. From now on, we'll always put Zoe first."

She spoke as though I came first, yet the first thing she did was reach for the cup of hot chocolate.

Justin slipped the straw into the cup and held it to her lips. "Careful. It's still hot, Mom."

I said nothing.

Inside my suitcase were the matching pajamas and slippers I'd picked out for us, as well as the tie I'd planned to surprise Justin with on our walk along the beach. Now they lay forgotten at the bottom of the suitcase, mocking me.

Karen called for Justin twice more that night. The first time, she complained that the curtains weren't blocking enough light. The second, she said the blanket was too thin.

Justin turned to me, impatience written across his face. "You're not asleep, are you?"

I stared up at the ceiling. "No."

"Then could you get my mom another blanket? I have to drive tomorrow."

I looked at him for a long while before getting out of bed and placing an extra blanket beside Karen's bed.

Outside, the waves rolled in, crashing against the shore again and again. Inside the room, all I could hear were the hushed voices of Justin and his mother.

The sea breeze blew through the night.

I'd only just gotten married, and already, I was homesick.

Zayne pursued me for two years. There were no grand gestures. Just a hundred small ones.Whenever my stomach acted up, he'd show up outside my door with medicine and a bowl of chicken soup.If I didn't feel like seeing anyone, he'd leave everything hanging from my doorknob and quietly head home ten minutes later. If I texted him after working past midnight saying I wasn't in the mood for supper, he'd claim he'd only bought one portion for himself. Then he'd pull another container out from the bottom of the bag, saying, "I figured you might change your mind."That winter, Zayne and I officially started dating. He wasn't good with romantic words, but he remembered that I didn't drink milk, didn't eat mangoes, was allergic to seafood, and hated it when people made plans for me without asking. The first time he took me to meet his parents, he asked me three times, "If you don't want to go, we won't go. And if my mom says anything that makes you uncomfortable, I'll handle it."Over d

A year later, I transferred back to my hometown.I'd barely stepped out of the train station when someone called after me."Ms. Myle! Wait up!"I turned and saw Zayne Wheeler jogging toward me. He dragged his suitcase with one hand while carrying my laptop bag in the other. His shirt collar was crooked from running. He was the structural engineer on the Sandston project. Even though he was two months younger than me, he always insisted on acting older than he was."Is your place far?" he asked between breaths. "Your mom said she's making beef stew tonight. Should I pick up some fruit on the way?"I sighed, half amused. "My mom was just being polite. You actually took her seriously?"He looked genuinely puzzled. "Of course. Your mom invited me herself. It would've been rude not to come."I spotted Justin as soon as I stepped out of the station. He was standing just beyond the crowd in a black overcoat, looking quieter somehow than I remembered.Zayne noticed him too. "A friend?

After relocating to Sandston, I barely had a moment to breathe. The new project moved at breakneck speed. I was on-site by eight every morning and rarely made it back to my apartment before ten at night. In a way, the heavy workload was a blessing. By the time I crawled into bed each night, I was too exhausted to dwell on everything that had happened. After the divorce papers were served, Justin still refused to sign them. My lawyer said we'd try negotiating first. If that went nowhere, we'd file for divorce in court.Three months later, Karen showed up at my office.I was in a conference room making revisions to a proposal when the receptionist called to say someone was here to see me.When I stepped into the lobby, Karen was sitting on one of the couches. She was impeccably dressed, with a thermal food container resting in her lap."Zoe," she said with a smile. "I made your favorite soup."I glanced at the container before looking back at her. "How did you know I was here?"

The day before I was due to join the IPO team, Justin came back.He was waiting downstairs outside my parents' apartment building with a suitcase beside him. He looked noticeably thinner and more worn out than before.I happened to run into him on my way to take out the trash. The scene felt strangely familiar. Except this time, I was carrying a bag of kitchen scraps, and my hair was tied back in a messy ponytail. I looked nothing like a newlywed bride. The moment Justin saw me, his eyes lit up. "Zoe."I shifted the trash bag to my other hand. "Could you move? The dumpster's behind you."He faltered. There had been a time when I couldn't wait to see him, when I'd greet him with a smile and a dozen things to tell him. Now, I had nothing left to say to him.Justin stepped aside. I tossed the trash into the dumpster and turned to head back inside. He reached out, stopping me."Can we talk?" he asked."Everything I have to say is in the divorce papers.""I'm not here to talk a

The next day, I met with a divorce lawyer. After hearing me out, he explained that the marriage had been so short that dividing our assets would be fairly straightforward. The house belonged to Justin. He'd bought it before we got married. However, I'd paid 180,000 dollars toward the renovation. The honeymoon had cost me another 70,000 dollars. Most of the gifts from the wedding had ended up in Karen's hands. She said she was keeping it safe for us.I pulled out every receipt and bank statement, organizing them one by one. By the end of it, I couldn't help laughing.Getting married had been like taking on a pro bono project for the Hudson family. I drew up the plans. I fronted the money. I swallowed every grievance. And in the end, even our honeymoon had to revolve around Karen. Justin finally called from an unfamiliar number that afternoon.I answered. His voice was hoarse as he called my name, "Zoe."I didn't respond. After a long silence, he asked, "Did you cancel our h

I landed back home on the fourth day after our wedding. The moment I turned my phone back on, it lit up with a flood of missed calls. They were from Justin, Karen, and several numbers I didn't recognize. I ignored every single one.Wheeling my suitcase behind me, I spotted my dad waiting by the arrivals gate. He was holding up a handwritten cardboard sign that read, "Welcome home, Zoe. Dinner's waiting."My eyes stung, and I almost started crying. His smile faded when he realized I was alone. "Where's Justin?""Still overseas. He's with his mom."A muscle in Dad's jaw twitched. "Weren't you two supposed to be on your honeymoon?""We were."He didn't ask another question and simply took my suitcase from my hand. "Come on. Your mom made soup."Mom called while we were on the drive home. "Did you pick her up?" she asked.Dad switched the call to speaker. "I did. She's lost weight."Mom's voice was filled with concern. "What? It's only been a few days. See? I told you that boy w
