Amelia’s POV
I wake up from the backseat. Still in a daze, I’m slow in thinking and I’m trying hard to figure out where I am. The car door has opened. A tall and strong figure stands in front of me and blocks the light outside. It’s Nyx, if that’s his real name. He leans over, holds me in his arms, and stands up straight. A tall and magnificent building comes into sight. Many terrible thoughts flash through my mind. Those rumors and legends about rich men with all kinds of quirks that I heard on the grapevine flood me and give me goosebumps. I slowly turn my head to Nyx, trying to get a hint of my situation from his expression. Meeting my eyes, his lips gradually curl up into a smile. The way he looks at me and smiles sends shivers down my spine. The handsome face and lethal smile that pulled my heartstrings at the party now only seem scary and cruel. Why did he bring me here? What does he want from me? At this moment, I can’t help but feel a wave of self-pity. Just when I thought things were finally looking up, that I might actually have a chance at a normal life, I find myself standing in front of this mansion, not knowing what the future holds for me. If this is some cruel joke life is playing on me, it’s one I’m not sure I can bear. He holds me tightly in his arms and walks inside the mansion. Close to his broad chest, I can hear his heartbeats and feel his breath. He carries me and walks with perfect ease. I would think of him as a strong bodyguard if he wasn’t greeted by everyone on the way. The door opens. God, I’ve never wished so strongly that I’m stepping into my crowded, shabby, bug-infested rented room in the slum, not this spacious and luxurious mansion. He puts me down on the sofa and sits by my side. Jesus, this sofa is so soft and smooth. I can’t help feeling it with my hand. What’s its upholstery made from? I glance around the living room of the mansion. And I’m completely dazzled. The exquisite rug, the dazzling crystal ornament, the ceiling adorned with a grand chandelier… everything inside is so amazing. This is beyond my imagination. Nyx, who are you? My probing eyes finally fall on this mysterious man, who brings me to a place where I’ll never get access by myself. He stares at me with a smile. For the whole next minute, he does nothing but stare at me and smile brightly. It’s so damn weird. I would definitely jump to my feet and run away from him if he wasn’t so handsome. Finally, he moves his lips, which makes me nervous. I know what he’s going to say will determine my fate. He utters, “Hello, mate.” My eyes widen. He says so quickly that I almost doubt my ears. What does mate mean? He senses my tension and confusion, but he doesn’t clear my confusion immediately. “Amelia, have you ever heard about werewolves?” I shake my head. Of course not. Werewolves sound like the types of characters in legends or bedtime stories. And during my childhood, I don’t have such a thing as bedtime stories, all I have is bedtime tears. “It’s OK. Human beings don’t know much about us. I understand.” His words make my jaw drop. Human beings? Us? Aren’t they human beings? What is he talking about? He clears his throat and takes on a serious tone. “I know what I’m going to tell you may be too shocking for you to sound real, but it’s true.” I swallow hard, with my heart in my throat. “I’m a werewolf, technically, I’m the alpha, the leader of the Sapphire Pack…” I laugh. Of course, it can’t be real. Is it a prank or is it a show? Nyx gestures to me to let him finish. He continues. “I’m not going to tell you everything about werewolves now, because it will be time-consuming. And you’ll get to learn more about it as you live with me…” Another earth-quaking piece of news for me! Living with him? “Yes, you’re going to live with me, because you’re my mate.” He nods affirmatively as he speaks. I frown deeply. And what is mate? “You talked about mate. What does it mean exactly?” I finally ask the question. “Being my mate is basically like having a relationship and getting married in human society. You’re my mate, so you’ll live with me, just like a married couple.” I’m so shocked that my eyes almost pop out. What is he talking about? I’m only nineteen and I’ve never thought about marriage. Nyx keeps talking. He looks around the mansion and adds, “Do you like this place? We’ll start a family and you’re going to live here with me.” Does he own this mansion? He must be kidding! And living here with him? No, this isn’t real!Amelia’s POVIt’s eight-thirty in the morning. Nyx has left for work. He came back at midnight yesterday and I don’t even know when he gets up this morning. He’s literally working his guts out. I want to check his injury and I still don’t get the chance. But I bet that wound is quite severe. I can tell from his pale face.I get dressed, leave the pack house, and walk a long way to the appointed place, a coffee shop. It’s in somewhere remote in the pack and it’s a nice place for some private talks.I enter the shop, order two cups of coffee, and begin to wait.As I’m waiting, I look around the coffee shop. The wall next to me is something like a mirror, reflecting my face and my determined look.Soon, the guy I wait shows up and sits in front of me.“Hi, Duke,” I push a cup of coffee in front of him.I can see that he’s a little nervous because I asked him out without telling him the reason.“Remember that promise?” I ask.Duke nods calmly. But he keeps drumming his finger on the table
Nyx’s POVStartled by my words, Eva stops all her movement and looks at me, fear and tension evident in her eyes.I signal her to sit back. She does accordingly. I’m already clenching my fist for fear that I might lose control and kill her. Yes, this can totally happen.“Eva, there’s one thing that you need to explain. Why did the emergency happen exactly after you poisoned me?” I cross my arms and examine her expression closely while I speak, trying to tell whether she’s going to lie or not.“What do you mean?” Eva looks at me in disbelief.I sneer, “Should I make it clearer? Amelia, the rogues attack the pack at the time that fits them the best and ambush me at the right place. What role did you play in this?”She looks at me with her eyes wide, as if she can’t believe my eyes. So she’s playing the victim now. If it wasn’t for her, things wouldn’t have come to this.“Nyx, do you mean it? I’ve been the Luna of the pack for such a long time. Now you’re suspecting me! Do you really th
Amelia’s POVI check the message. Still no reply.I don’t believe a word Eva says. But I can tell from Eva’s reaction that Nyx is fine.He must be very busy now. He’s out on a trip and an emergency happens. There must be a lot for him to handle. But I hate that I have to know it from a third person, especially a woman I hate.It sucks.Anyway, I’ll just come back home and wait. After taking a quick shower, I change into my sleeping gown, lie on the sofa in the living room, and pull a blanket over my body.I need to know it immediately when he comes back. I also need sleep. So I’ll just wait for him in the living room.Because of fatigue, I fall sound asleep very quickly.Somehow my forehead feels wet. Someone kisses me.Is it a dream?I slowly open my eyes. Nyx’s face is what I see first.Nyx is back! I’m not dreaming, am I?Seeing that I’m awake, he pulls me into his arms tightly and kisses me on my lips.I wrap my hands around his body. All the tension and worry for the whole night
Amelia’s POV“Amelia, you’re not escaping from the pack, right?” Duke asks with suspicion. What is he talking about? This idiot!Well, he has a good reason to doubt me, because it’s a godsent chance to leave here, with Nyx out of trace and the pack in a mess. But I’ll prove to him that I’ll stay and help.“I’m going to the hospital,” I say to Duke firmly.Duke looks at my expression closely before he nods. Then he stops a warrior and orders him to take me to the hospital. The warrior nods.As I enter the hospital, I’m shocked by what I see.The corridor is crowded with injured warriors. And the physicians are moving in and out of wards. It looks quite similar to the hospitals in the human world.Growing up alone, I have to learn a lot of medical knowledge, because I have no one to turn to when I’m ill. I’ve also learned something about first aid. And these days I’ve been studying the herbs. I believe I can be helpful.A woman in white comes over and notices me. Before I say anything,
Nyx’s POVI give my arm a hard pinch so that the pain can sober me up. Before she touches me again, I summon all my force to kick her on her stomach. She lies on the ground and looks at me bitterly.I stumble to the window, open it, and tear the window gauze. I climb on the windowsill. I’ve promised Amelia that I won’t be alone with Eva. I need to get out of here! Damn, it’s the eighth floor. If I’m not posioned, this would be easy for me. But now my head is spinning and my eyelids are heavy, I’m not sure.“Nyx, don’t!” Eva’s voice is getting louder from behind. She’s coming over! No time to hesitate, I swing my legs and take a leap out of the window. I’d rather get injured than stay in the same room with her.Luckily, I steady myself on a narrow ledge outside, gripping the outer wall of the hotel with finger.“Nyx!” Eva looks outside from the window. It’s windy, but the wind doesn’t make me more lucid. And I can feel the strength losing out on me. Shit, I need to get down there fas
Amelia’s POVI don’t know exactly when Nyx leaves, because I’m sound asleep at that time. The moment I’m awake alone in the bed, I’m seized by a sense of loss. I begin to miss him.I get up, enter the study room, and try to kill time with books. But I just can’t focus on books! Nyx comes to my mind from time to time and always distracts me. Now I’m learning the effect of bloodroot. And the next second, I’m thinking about what Nyx might be doing now, whether he will miss me, and how he and Eva will get along. He’s out on a pack visit, so I refrain from contacting him. But I miss him so much and I’m expecting his messages. Every time the message notification comes out, I will grab my phone and see if it’s from Nyx. And I will be disappointed. It’s gonna be a long day. Finally, it’s night!More precisely, the sun has set and it has just turned dark. But I can’t wait to contact him! I can’t wait to listen to him talk about his day! I can’t wait to see his face!I know the schedule is v
