Chapter 1

That evening, I'd just finished packing the last box of carving tools when Matteo came home.

He came through the door with the chill from outside still on him. When he saw me, he took my hand out of habit and frowned. "Why are your hands so cold?"

Then he took off his coat and draped it over my shoulders.

It was such a familiar gesture.

For a moment, it even took me back. Then I looked past his shoulder and saw Lia standing outside the door.

Matteo followed my gaze and turned, like he'd only just remembered there was someone else there. He reached out and brought her in. "Elena, this is Lia Conti. Her adoptive parents owe money to a casino, and they tried to hand her over to the collectors to pay it off. She's staying here for now. Once it's dealt with, I'll send her off."

He wasn't asking. He was telling me.

I slowly took the coat off my shoulders, laid it back over his arm, and looked at his chest.

"Her name is already inked over your heart. Do you really need to tell me who she is?"

Some of the tenderness left Matteo's face. "It's just to cover the scar. She said it looked too scary. The tattoo artist came up with it on the spot, and I didn't think much of it."

"On the spot. So he put her name there?"

"Elena." He rubbed the bridge of his nose, clearly getting impatient. "You really have to fight with me over something like this?"

Something like this.

Back then, he'd called that bullet our second wedding ring. He'd said that every time he saw the scar, he'd remember who brought him back.

Now that scar had another woman's name on it.

And to him, it was just something like this.

Lia suddenly stepped forward and tugged gently at Matteo's sleeve. "Matteo, it's all my fault. I'm the one who said the scar looked painful and suggested getting something inked over it. Don't fight with Elena."

I looked up.

In private, I only ever called him Matteo during our most intimate moments. In front of the Moretti family, I always called him Don Moretti or simply Moretti because his authority mattered to him more than anything.

But on her very first day in the house, this woman was already saying his name as intimately as I ever had.

And Matteo didn't correct her.

All at once, I had no more questions. I turned to go upstairs.

But Lia came after me and caught my arm. "Elena, wait."

She took a black velvet box out of her purse and opened it. Inside was the diamond ring from the auction.

"Matteo insisted on giving me this. Someone like me can't wear something this expensive. You should take it."

She sounded as though she were giving it up, but she kept one fingertip pressed against the most visible part of the band.

The hallmark of the Moretti family's private jeweler was stamped there.

Five years ago, Matteo personally picked out everything he gave me. He said the Moretti family could buy the most expensive jewelry in the city, but anything he gave me had to be one of a kind.

I looked at the ring for two seconds and pulled my arm free. "No, thanks. I don't take other people's hand-me-downs."

Lia's eyes went red.

Matteo frowned right away and stepped in front of her. "Enough. She was just trying to be nice and give you the ring. Do you have to humiliate her the minute she walks in?"

Then he grabbed the ring and shoved it into my palm.

The cold diamond dug into my hand.

I looked down at it and suddenly laughed.

"Matteo, we're done."

His expression faltered.

Before he could say anything, someone cried out in pain beside us.

Lia had backed into my toolbox and knocked it over. A long, thin carving knife slid off the edge of the table and plunged into the top of her foot.

Blood soaked into the pale rug.

She went white and sagged.

Matteo barely hesitated before he scooped her up.

"Whatever you have to say can wait till I get back."

He carried Lia toward the door.

At the same time, my phone buzzed.

"Helicopter is in the air. Arriving in 20 minutes."

I locked my screen, looked at Matteo's back, and said softly, "We have no future."

He stopped for half a second.

But Lia was gasping in his arms, saying it hurt, and he still didn't look back.

I looked up at Matteo."What else do you want to hear?"He looked back at me. "I want to hear you say it yourself. That we're really over.""Then I'll say it."Everything around us went quiet."The first time our marriage ended was when you tattooed Lia's name over the bullet scar on your chest."Matteo's lips moved."It ended again when you copied the black rose that had been mine alone and gave it to her."It ended a third time when one accusation from her was enough for you to have Sofia pinned down and beaten."And the final time was when the Cassano helicopter landed on your north lawn. You knew Sofia was badly hurt, but you still listened to Lia and sent me out there alone."I looked at him. "At that moment, it was obvious who mattered more to you. It was her, not me. There was nothing left to explain."Matteo's eyes slowly reddened. "I was just afraid that if the Cassano men came onto the estate, things would get out of hand. I knew they'd never really hurt you—""See?"I cut hi

  • My Husband Brought Another Woman Home, I Left by Helicopter   Chapter 8

Matteo stood outside the Cassano gates for three days. The first day, he was still neatly dressed in a black overcoat. The second day, it started raining. He didn't leave.By the afternoon of the third day, his jaw was covered in stubble and his eyes were bloodshot. The head of the Moretti family had always kept everything firmly under control, but now, for the first time, he looked like he had no idea what to do next.I hadn't planned to pay any attention. That changed when I heard engines rumbling in unison in the distance. The Cassano guards quickly opened the outer gates.Six black town cars rolled up the tree-lined drive.Someone murmured, "It's the De Santis family.""Luca came in person?"Matteo's head snapped up.The De Santis family and the Cassano family had been allies for decades. The man my grandfather had wanted me to marry five years ago was Luca De Santis.Matteo had obviously heard the name too.As the cars neared the gates, he stepped right into the middle of the road

When the helicopter landed on the hill behind the Cassano estate, I saw my grandfather standing at the far end of the helipad. His hair had grown much whiter in the five years since I'd last seen him. He still wore a dark suit and carried the wooden cane I'd always thought was ugly when I was little.I'd thought he'd yell at me.After all, five years ago, I'd turned down the match he'd arranged for me because of Matteo, right in front of the entire Cassano family. I'd even said I'd never come back as long as I lived. But when my grandfather saw the blood on my shoulder and Sofia lying unconscious, the cane he'd raised stopped in midair. Instead, he brought it down hard against the ground."Save her first."The medical team wheeled Sofia away.I stood there, not knowing what to say.My grandfather came up to me and looked at me for a long time."So you finally remembered the way home?"My eyes stung. "I did."He sighed."I'm glad you're home."At those words, the tears I'd been holding

When two enforcers grabbed Lia, she finally dropped the helpless act."Why are you playing the devoted husband now?"She struggled, laughing shrilly. "You bought the ring. You took me to get the tattoo. You're the one who had me sit with you at your anniversary dinner. And your men beat Sofia like that on your own orders!"Elena's gone. You can skin me alive, and she still won't come back!"Matteo didn't say anything. That only made her more smug. "What, you regret it now? You only just realized the Cassano family has more power than you thought, and now you're scared. Isn't that it?"Matteo looked up.That look made Lia's voice falter for a second. She gritted her teeth, then sneered. "Touch me, and every Moretti secret will end up in the Baldi family's hands."The room went dead quiet.Matteo slowly straightened up.Lia thought she'd found his weak spot, and her words came faster. "The container numbers for next month's South Docks shipments. The locations of your three safe houses.

"Find out."Matteo crumpled the list in his fist. For the first time, his voice wavered."Whose helicopter was that?"One of his men went out and came back in less than ten minutes, looking uneasy. "Cassano's."The living room went silent.Matteo slowly looked up. "Which Cassano?"The man forced himself to answer. "The Cassano family on the West Side. The one that runs three docks, the North Shore shipping line, and a handful of casinos."Matteo's fingers froze.Five years ago, Elena and her grandfather had fought so bitterly over her decision to marry Matteo that they'd nearly cut each other off.Back then, Matteo had thought Elena was simply from an old-money family. He'd never really asked how much power the Cassano family had, and Elena had never used her family's connections to get anything for herself. But now he finally understood. It wasn't that Elena had nowhere to go.It was that she'd once shut every door behind her for him.Lia leaned in and said quietly, "Matteo, I was so

When I agreed to sit down, Matteo visibly relaxed. He even pulled me into his arms like he used to and brushed his lips against my hair. "That's more like it. Stop talking about leaving every five minutes. I don't like hearing it."Lia's perfume still clung to his shirt collar. My stomach turned. The old hourglass I'd been using to keep track of the time stood in the middle of the dining room, its sand almost gone.It was less than ten minutes to eight.Matteo had his men release Sofia, but he didn't actually let her leave. The two enforcers still stood behind her. Her right hand hung limp, her wrist clearly dislocated, and there was blood on her neck and at the corner of her mouth.I couldn't let myself look at her for long.I was afraid one more glance would make me start a war with the Moretti family on the spot.Matteo seemed to think I'd finally given in. He peeled a shrimp for me himself and put it on my plate. "Relax, Sofia's not going to die. After dinner, I'll have a doctor tr
