Chapter 3

작가: Jasmine Woods
After Cedric left, I collapsed onto the floor, completely drained of strength.

Then I laughed through my tears.

My thoughts drifted back to our first meeting.

That day, our school organized a trip to the beach. I accidentally wandered into deep water.

The waves swallowed me whole and I thought I was going to die. Then Cedric appeared.

He came to save me, got tangled in seaweed, and nearly lost his own life.

I was drawn to his bright, handsome face and insisted on getting his contact information.

We dated for two years. On the day he proposed, he swore to me, “Elysia, you are the only woman I will ever love. No matter what happens, I will always trust you and never hurt you.”

After marriage, he truly treated me well, doting on me in every possible way.

Together, we took out loans to build a maritime rescue company.

That was also where he supposedly died in an accident.

I never expected it all to be part of his deception.

Staggering to my feet, I was about to leave when several leering men burst into the room.

I instinctively backed away, staring at them warily.

“What do you want?”

A tall, pockmarked man with a greasy smile stepped toward me.

“Relax, sweetheart. We’re not strangers.”

In his hand was a long syringe. My legs trembled in fear.

Back then, when debt collectors came to my door and I could not pay, they used those same syringes to draw my blood.

“I don’t have your money. If you want payment, go find Cedric. He’s not dead. He’s the live-in son-in-law of the Lane family.”

The man burst out laughing. He looked at me like I was an idiot.

“You still think we’re actually here to collect debt from you?

“That was just a story Mr. Foster made up to keep you distracted and away from him.

“The company you worked so hard for? It was never bankrupt. It’s being run by him and Miss Lane.”

It felt like a lightning bolt struck my mind.

Everything I had risked my life for was fake.

I was laughably stupid.

“Someone told us to ‘play with you’ however we want,” said the man with a twisted grin.

“Don’t worry. We’ll be gentle. You’ll never forget it.”

As their disgusting hands moved closer, I desperately dialed a number.

“Cedric, some men are trying to hurt me. Come quickly. I’m at the apartment from earlier.”

However, the voice that answered wasn’t his.

It was Victoria.

“Darling, you’re seriously still messing around with that girl? You go over there, and we’re done.”

Cedric’s cold voice followed, “Elysia, don’t call me again. You’re upsetting my wife.

“I know this is just your way of trying to win me back, but I won’t fall for it.”

The next second, I heard breathless sounds that shattered whatever was left of my heart.

“Honey, be gentler. I can’t take it anymore…”

I laughed. It was a hollow, broken laugh.

Cedric, you finally killed every last bit of love I had for you.

The men’s filthy hands roamed over me. Their voices were filled with obscene laughter, yet I could not hear any of it anymore.

With all my remaining strength, I slammed myself into the wall.

When I opened my eyes again, all I heard was the steady drip of medical equipment.

The nurse told me gently, “Take it slow. You suffered a severe head injury and a mild concussion.”

“And I…?”

She cut me off before I could finish.

“Don’t worry. You weren’t assaulted. Someone passing by noticed something was wrong and called the police in time.”

I let out a breath I did not realize I was holding.

Then my best friend rushed in, crying as she ran.

She handed me a paternity test report.

I looked at it and laughed.

Victoria froze in place, unable to believe what had just happened. She crawled toward Cedric, clutching at his pant leg in desperation.“No, no, don’t divorce me. Honey, I don’t want to divorce you. You’ve always loved me. You can’t abandon me.”She cried hysterically, completely broken, full of regret.Mrs. Lane stepped forward and shielded me. Her gaze was cold as she looked down at Victoria.“From today on, there is no adopted daughter in the Lane family. You have nothing to do with us anymore. Get out.”Victoria’s face turned ashen. She collapsed onto the floor.Still, she tried one last time. “I didn’t know she was the real daughter of the Lane family. I didn’t mean to hurt her…”However, no matter what she said, no one listened anymore. No one cared.Without the Lane family’s protection, everything she had — her wealth, her pride, her status — vanished overnight. As for Cedric, the man who had risen to power only through his connection to the Lane family, he was ordere

“So that’s Mr. Foster's ex-wife? I heard she’s been living pretty miserably.”“She actually came to the Lane family’s reunion banquet to cause trouble? She has no shame.”“She looks beautiful, but who knew she was so vicious?”Every mocking word felt like a needle piercing Cedric’s skin.Panic surged through him. He reached for my arm and tried to pull me down the stage. “Leave now. Stop causing trouble!”I effortlessly sidestepped his outstretched hand and looked at him with cold indifference. Not a flicker of emotion crossed my face. It was as though I were looking at a complete stranger. At that moment, Mrs. Lane hurried to my side. After she shot Cedric a warning look, she firmly took my hand. The smile in her eyes was warm and reassuring. Then she turned toward the crowd and announced clearly, “Everyone, this is my biological daughter, Elysia.“My precious daughter, whom I’ve been searching for for over twenty years.”The entire ballroom fell silent.A DNA test report

That day at the hospital, my best friend took a strand of my hair and secretly arranged a DNA test with Mrs. Lane.Neither of us expected the result. I was truly the Lane family’s long-lost biological daughter.By the time Mrs. Lane found me, I had already been locked in the basement by Cedric’s men.I made a deal with her.If she got me out, I would return to the Lane family and reclaim my place.I also asked her to keep my identity a secret for the time being.Cedric and Victoria could not find out.She agreed. Not only did she arrange for me to be rescued immediately, but she also had all traces of my personal information erased. No matter how hard Cedric searched, he would never find me.When the news broke, the entire city was stunned. The Lane family was the wealthiest family in Ocean City. The loss of their biological daughter had been Mrs. Lane’s greatest regret for over twenty years. After searching all over the world, they had finally found her. When Victoria hea

While taking photos of Victoria in Provence, Cedric found his mind was completely filled with Elysia. The way she had blushed when he proposed and accepted his ring. The way she had sobbed uncontrollably at his “funeral,” as though her entire world had collapsed. Also, the way she had knelt before him, forced to apologize to Victoria. Her eyes were filled with despair as she looked at him.Lately, he had begun to suffer from insomnia. He would wake up in the middle of the night, drenched in unease. He even found himself unconsciously buying two souvenirs — one for Victoria, and another for Elysia. It was as though some part of him still expected to bring it to her.Victoria finally noticed something was wrong.“Honey, what’s going on with you? You’ve been spacing out lately.”She looped her arm through his, slightly displeased.“Nothing.” Cedric came back to his senses and forced a faint smile. “I’m just a little tired.”He was lying to her, and to himself. The trip stretch

After Elysia was dragged away, Cedric immediately called for a doctor in a panic.“Doctor, hurry and check on Victoria. She’s pregnant. She was pushed earlier and she’s in bad shape.”Victoria leaned against his chest, fingers tightly gripping the bedsheet. A flicker of panic flashed across her eyes. She was not pregnant at all.It had all been a lie, something she blurted out in the heat of the moment. She wanted to completely crush Elysia to make sure Cedric would never trust that woman again. Now she had taken it too far. If the doctor examined her, everything would fall apart.Cedric noticed the sweat on her forehead and gently comforted her.“Don’t be scared, baby. I’m here. Nothing will happen to you or the child.”Victoria nodded weakly, hiding her unease. No one noticed the stiffness in her expression.A few minutes later, the doctor removed the stethoscope, looking awkward.“Mr. Foster, Miss Lane is not pregnant.”Cedric froze for a moment. “What did you say?”“Th

No sooner had my best friend left than the hospital room door burst open.Cedric stormed into the room. His eyes blazed with murderous intent. He threw a phone onto my bed. A video was playing on the screen.“I already told you I’d make it up to you.“Victoria never did anything to hurt you, so why would you hire people to go after her?!”I stared at him in disbelief. Then I saw the footage and laughed bitterly. The video showed exactly what I had gone through not long ago. When I called Cedric begging for help, he had been busy sleeping with Victoria. Now they were turning around and accusing me of doing the same thing to her.“I didn’t do any of this. Victoria set me up. Believe it or not.”Cedric let out a mocking laugh. His voice dripped with sarcasm.“Victoria is the kindest person I know. Do you really think I’d believe you?“She’s still traumatized from what happened.“You’re going to apologize to her. Right now.“You’ll keep apologizing until she forgives you.H
