Chapter 10

Author: Bagel
A faint smile played on my lips. I had expected as much.

After I returned to the main tent, my colleague Matthew came over, eager for gossip.

"Was that your husband? Came all this way to find you. That's some real persistence. My ex dumped me the second he heard I was going to Africa and found someone younger."

"So, how come he didn't stay with you?"

I quietly gathered my lab notes from the table and said simply, "Not husband. Ex-husband."

Matthew paused for a beat, then wisely dropped the subject.

Soon, the relentless pace of work pushed the incident to the back of my mind.

Two years later, I was invited back to New York to give a speech at the United Nations Headquarters for my contributions to global public health.

My expertise in biomedical science had deepened, becoming both broader and more nuanced. And this time, I wasn't returning alone. My boyfriend, Jasper, was with me.

  • My Husband Said He Gifted Me a Child, So I Gifted Him a Exit   Chapter 9

The gunfire was a clash between local militants and government forces, and the conflict was spilling over into the medical camp.On instinct alone, I grabbed Liam—who was frozen solid by the gunshots and my cold rejection—and pulled him down behind a supply truck. The movement was practiced and calm.Liam collapsed to the ground in terror, babbling incoherently."Ava... are we going to die? I haven't... I still have my son to take care of..."I, on the other hand, was used to this. I calmly spoke into my walkie-talkie, coordinating with the security team."Matthew, we have active conflict in the northeast corner. Move all critical patients to the basement immediately.""Prioritize securing antibiotics and blood plasma."Liam's raw fear was a pathetic contrast to the moral high ground he'd claimed just moments before. This man, a titan of Wall Street, couldn't even stand on his own two feet in the face of real danger. After some time, the gunfire began to thin.I called over a security

My breath caught in my throat. An image of Liam flashed in my mind, feeling like a lifetime ago. A storm of forgotten emotions churned within me.Could it... could it really be Liam? Before I could even process it, he burst into the tent. "Ava! I finally found you!"He rushed forward and pulled me into a hug, burying his face in my neck, his tears hot against my skin. He was a shadow of his former self, rail-thin, his eyes bloodshot. But we were strangers now.Shortly after I arrived in Kenya, my lawyer had sent me a message. He said the divorce proceedings had been officially initiated.Whether Liam cooperated or not, the court would legally declare our marriage null and void within two weeks. So I didn't understand why he would go to such great lengths to find me now. With that thought, I pushed him away gently, my voice firm."Liam, we're divorced."Hearing this, Liam's eyes grew redder, his voice hoarse."Ava, please don't push me away. I went to every airline, checked every depart

As the plane touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, I rested my head against the window, gazing at the vast blue sky over the African continent. It felt surreal. From this moment on, I no longer belonged to any one place. I would dedicate myself to a world that needed me more. After more than a dozen hours of flying, my fellow medical team members and I deplaned, exhausted. This was a world away from the glamorous comfort of New York. It was a place of sickness and death, where a single misstep could cost you your life.In the SUV on the way to the camp, the project leader, Matthew, briefed us on the local epidemic. He handed each of us a set of protective gear, saying that while saving lives was important, protecting our own was paramount."Every pathogen you study here can be lethal," he said. "Remember, you have to protect yourself before you can save anyone else."His words filled me with a profound sense of purpose.I suddenly thought back to my years with Liam, when

Liam and the others rushed Finnian to the hospital. On the way, the stress seemed to trigger a relapse in Chloe. Her face went ashen, and she looked on the verge of collapse. The baby's face was turning blue as he gasped for air in Liam's arms. Meanwhile, Chloe clutched at Liam's sleeve, her brow furrowed in pain."Liam... my chest feels so tight... I can't breathe..."Liam's jaw was clenched, his head spinning. He was completely overwhelmed, unsure of who to comfort first. At New York's top children's hospital, Finnian was in the emergency room being treated by a team of specialists, including the head of pediatrics and a renowned neurologist. But even they were stumped.Liam grabbed the attending physician's hand, his voice shaking. "Dr. Johnson, Dr. Williams, please, you have to save my son!""I don't know what happened, he just started seizing. It's really bad... I was told an appointment was made for him with you. Please, you have to remember."The neurologist, Dr. Williams, stare

Staring at the black and white text of the documents, Liam's mind went blank. He grabbed the old butler's arm, his grip desperate. "Where did you find this? It's fake. Tell me this is a joke—that Ava's just angry and playing some kind of sick game, right?"The old butler winced, struggling to breathe under his grip. "Mr. Grant," he managed to say, "that's the madam's signature. You know it is... And besides," he hesitated before delivering the final blow, "all of her things are gone."Those words snapped Liam back to reality. In front of all his guests, he lost all composure and bolted from the church. He tried to call me.Again and again."Ava, please. Please, just pick up.""I was wrong, Ava. Please, just give me a chance to apologize..."But all he heard was the cold, robotic voice on the other end: "The number you have dialed is not in service."It was only then that he understood. My quiet compliance, my seeming acceptance of it all—it was just a front, a way to ensure he wouldn't
