Chapter 1

The day my husband, Landon Warren, came home, my daughter, Lucia Warren, and I waited at the door for three hours with flowers. The moment his car came to a stop, she was the first to rush over. "Daddy!"

Landon, however, paused for a moment when he climbed out. He didn't pull Lucia into his arms, nor did he look at me.

He stood beside the car door, gazing up at the sky. The clouds hung low on that overcast day, and the sun was nowhere to be seen. Yet, he stared at it for a long while.

After the staff member reminded him, he lowered his head and asked me, "What day is it?"

I was caught off guard. "It's the first of the month. Why?"

His lips parted slightly, and his shoulders slowly relaxed. "It's nothing. I only have to wait for 14 days."

I didn't follow. When I tried to ask him again, he'd already taken Lucia by the hand and led her inside.

I made all his favorite dishes for our first meal together.

Lucia was so excited she could barely sit still. While piling food onto his plate, she asked if there really was no wind on the moon.

"Daddy, can you jump really high on the moon?"

"Yeah."

"Then, did you pick up any rocks from the moon?"

Landon's hand froze in midair. "Nope."

"Oh," she responded before picking up a meatball and bringing it to his lips. "Eat up, Daddy. Open wide!"

Landon raised his head. The moment he got a clear look at the grainy ball, the smile on his face vanished.

He stared long and hard at that meatball, and his breathing became erratic. "Get it away from me."

Lucia didn't catch what he said and brought her fork closer to his mouth. "Mommy made this. It's super yummy!"

Landon abruptly raised his hand and knocked the fork out of her hand. The meatball fell onto the table, rolled a few times, and stopped in front of him.

He sprang to his feet and slammed his palm onto it. The minced meat squeezed through the gaps between his fingers.

Lucia was paralyzed. It took a couple of seconds before she burst into tears.

I hastily pulled her into my arms. "What on earth are you doing, Landon?"

He lowered his head and looked at his hand, as if he'd only just realized what he'd done. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do that!"

He tried to wipe Lucia's tears away, but she shrank back into my arms. His hand froze in midair before he slowly withdrew it.

I thought that was the end of it. However, the very next second, he picked up the plate and dumped the fried eggs, meatballs, and cauliflower into the trash. He didn't even spare the cherry tomatoes on Lucia's plate.

He crouched in front of the trash can and crushed the food one piece at a time. Red juice mixed with meat leaked out from a tear in the bottom of the bag.

I stepped forward to stop him. "What has gotten into you?"

"These things make me uncomfortable."

"How so?"

He looked up at me with bloodshot eyes. "They're too round."

I followed his gaze and looked at the trash can. "What's wrong with being round?"

Landon fell silent.

Just then, the clock on the wall chimed. He whipped his head around and stared intently at the round quartz clock on the wall.

The second hand ticked forward, one notch at a time. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

All of a sudden, Landon lunged forward and ripped the clock off the wall. The glass casing shattered into a spiderweb of cracks.

Yet, as if that were still not enough, he raised his foot and stomped on it. He didn't stop until the clock face was completely shattered.

Lucia hid behind me, weeping quietly.

I seized Landon's arm. "Does this have something to do with what you saw on the moon?"

The moment he heard the word "moon", his entire body went rigid.

I asked Lucia to head to her room first.

As soon as her door clicked shut, I walked back to him. "I'm your wife, and I'm also part of the ground support team for your mission to the far side of the moon. You should at least tell me what you encountered out there."

Landon lowered his head, surrounded by shattered clock parts at his feet. "It's not something you can handle."

"What is it?"

He fell silent.

I reached out to touch him, but he abruptly took a step back.

We'd been married for nine years. This was the first time he'd ever shied away from me.

The living room was so silent that only his heavy breathing could be heard.

After a prolonged silence, he slowly raised his head. Those bloodshot eyes looked past my shoulder, settling on the gloomy sky outside the window.

"I saw the moon spirit."

I was sure my ears were playing tricks on me. "What did you just say?"

"On the far side of the moon." He slowly turned his head to look into my eyes. "I saw the moon spirit, Sylvia."

Landon's hand stiffened against the glass. "What did you just say?"The moon spirit toyed with the lunar dust crystals. Her smile widened. "Don't you understand? It was all a lie."Landon hurled his body against the glass wall. "You lied to me… You gave me your word! I handed Sylvia over to you. I even gave up my own family!" "You did that of your own free will," the moon spirit answered softly through my lips. "I only asked if you wanted to live forever. You were the one who fell to your knees and begged me to take your wife." Landon shook his head frantically. "That's impossible. What about the others? They've been alive for 20 years!" "They merely existed." The moon spirit chuckled. "Their wives are gone, and they never attained immortality. If they admitted they'd been deceived, wouldn't everything they'd done become a joke? So, they helped me conceal the truth, waiting for the next person to go to the moon so they could fool themselves all over again. Landon, you're just a

Lucia didn't budge. Her gaze shifted from the plea that had been wiped away to my face. "Are you really my Mommy?" The corners of my mouth slowly lifted. "Silly girl, of course I am." "In that case, do you remember when we went to the aquarium to see the dolphins for my fifth birthday?" The woman inside my head chuckled. Using my voice, she answered, "Of course, I remember. You even threw a tantrum because you wanted to bring the dolphin home." Lucia's tears immediately spilled over. "You're lying. I had a high fever on my fifth birthday. We didn't go anywhere." She pounded on the glass. "You're not my Mommy! Give me my Mommy back!" Her words pierced my consciousness like needles. I repeatedly hurled myself against the icy wall with all my strength. The excruciating pain felt as though it was splitting my skull in two. At last, I reclaimed my voice. "Lucia." I pressed my forehead against the glass. "Don't open the door. Stay away from me!" Lucia nodded, weeping.Ca

Lucia let go of my hand. "You're not my Mommy." I wanted to tell her that I was her Mommy. Yet, my mouth wouldn't obey me. "Of course, I am." I reached out to caress her face. "From now on, I'll never grow old, and I'll never leave you." Lucia stumbled backward, knocking over a chair. Caleb rushed into the hospital room and shielded her behind him. "Sylvia, can you hear me?" I looked at him and smiled faintly. "You've aged."Caleb stiffened. "Two decades ago, you had the courage to look me in the eye. Why can't you do it now?" That wasn't my voice, yet every word came out of my mouth. I was trapped inside my own body. I could see Lucia crying, but I couldn't move a single finger. The woman chuckled inside my mind. "Give up. Hand your body over to me, and I'll take care of your daughter in your place."I hurled myself against the icy wall separating me from my consciousness. Each time I struck it, it felt as though my mind was being ripped apart. However, she showed

The pounding on the door continued, one deafening blow after another. The elation on Landon's face instantly turned to terror. He pulled out the knife, and blood spurted from my shoulder. Black spots swam before my eyes, but I clung desperately to his pant leg. "Run, Lucia!"Lucia had just gotten to her feet when Landon seized her in a vice-like grip. He pressed the tip of the knife against our daughter's neck. "Stay back! If any of you set foot inside, I'll kill her!"The pounding on the door stopped. "Let the girl go, Landon." The police officer outside softened his tone. "You can tell us what you want.""Get back, all of you!" Landon dragged Lucia back toward the window. Lucia trembled all over, but she bit her lip down hard. I clutched my wound and rose to my feet. "I'm the one you want, Landon. Lucia has nothing to do with this." The woman's voice sounded again in the hallway. "She's stalling for time. Kill her!" Landon shuddered. The edge of the knife drew a thin s

I shielded Lucia behind me and slowly backed toward the window. Landon stood at the doorway, holding his knife horizontally. "Listen to me, Landon.""Don't call me that." His eyes were bloodshot. "Every time you call my name, I can't bring myself to do it." I stared at him. "Were the 11 men before me just like you?" Landon stopped in his tracks. "Did they also cry and apologize before handing their own wives over with their own hands?" "Shut up!""Did they attain immortality?"The muscles on his face twitched. I knew I had hit the mark. "Two decades have passed. Has the moon spirit ever fulfilled her promise?" "I told you to shut up!" He swung his knife at the headboard. The blade hacked into the wood, and Lucia burst into tears. Landon panted heavily. "They failed. Their wives wouldn't listen, and in the end, they couldn't bring themselves to do it. I'm different from them!" I followed his line of reasoning and asked, "Because you can kill me?" His lips quiv

Landon's hand jolted violently. "What do you get?"I kept my eyes on the knife pressed against my chest. "Is killing me the only way you can attain immortality?" It clattered to the ground. Landon stumbled backward and sank to his knees beside the bed. "No… I'm not trying to kill you."He clutched his hair as tears streamed down his face. "She just wants to borrow your body. You won't be in pain for long, Sylvia. She promised me!"My stomach churned. "What about me, then? If she takes my body, where am I supposed to go?" He parted his lips, yet he couldn't find his voice.I sneered. "Did she not tell you, or did you not bother to ask?" Landon shook his head frantically. "I genuinely had no choice. When I saw her on the moon, she showed me what would happen to me. I'd age, fall ill, and eventually become so weak I couldn't even get out of bed. Lucia would grow up, and you'd grow old, too. "Both of you would sit by my bedside, watching me rot away. I couldn't accept it, Syl
