Chapter 1

"Don't touch me! Who even are you? Never seen a man before? Throwing yourself at me like that!" Lawrence Henwood snapped, shoving me away with a look of disdain.

I stumbled and nearly fell.

"Lawrence, what's wrong with you? It's me, your wife—Nadine Coolidge," I replied, my voice trembling.

I stared, confused, at my husband, who lay in the hospital bed.

"Wife? I don't know you at all! The first person I saw when I woke up was Sophie. If I'm married to anyone, it's her—not you!" Lawrence exclaimed, pulling Sophie into his arms and holding her tightly.

The love shining in his eyes pierced my heart.

The man who had once promised to love me had forgotten me—and now, he wanted to marry another woman?

"Nadine, Mr. Henwood accidentally hit his head. The doctor said he has amnesia and doesn't remember anything—except me," Sophie said, lowering her head shyly.

However, the smugness in her eyes was impossible to miss.

Fighting back the ache in my chest, I spoke coldly. "It's just temporary amnesia. With proper treatment, he'll recover in time."

I had heard rumors about Lawrence and his assistant, Sophie Lucy.

She had just graduated from university this year. Her looks weren't extraordinary, but she was young and bore a passing resemblance to the woman Lawrence had once loved, who was now abroad.

Since she had joined the Henwood Group, his favoritism had been obvious to all.

I had confronted him about it before, but he denied everything, insisting I was overthinking things and that I was the only one in his heart.

Now, with his memory gone, he had forgotten me.

"Nadine, is it? I don't remember you, but I do remember Sophie. Clearly, she's the one I truly love.

"There's no point in forcing this. Let's get a divorce and set each other free," Lawrence said, his tone filled with annoyance.

For a brief moment, I thought I saw a flicker of guilt in his eyes. Maybe I was mistaken.

I refused to believe that the man who had pursued me for three years and spoiled me for six would abandon me so easily.

"Lawrence, you're just confused right now. Don't worry. I'll arrange for the best medical team to help you. You'll be fine," I reassured him.

"You don't get it, do you? I can't stand the sight of you. There's no way I'd ever want to stay married to you." Lawrence's rejection was sharp, his disdain palpable.

"Nadine, Mr. Henwood doesn't love you anymore. Why cling to him like this? Isn't it embarrassing?" Sophie chimed in, her voice soft but dripping with condescension.

Fury surged through me.

"Shut up! If it weren't for you, he wouldn't have had the accident! I haven't even begun to hold you accountable!" I snapped.

"Don't you dare speak to Sophie that way!" Lawrence scolded, pulling her protectively into his arms. "I don't love you anymore. You should reflect on yourself instead of blaming others."

"Lawrence, today is our fifth wedding anniversary. You promised me you'd spend it with me. But then she called, and you left—and had the accident. And now I can't even say anything to her?" I demanded, my voice breaking.

His unwavering defense of Sophie felt like a dagger to my heart.

"Lawrence, don't be angry. Nadine is just worried about you. I understand why she's upset," Sophie said, her tone soothing. "Nadine, I'm ill. I might not have long left. My only wish is to marry someone I love. Please, do us a favor and let us be together."

Her tears fell like pearls from a broken string as she pleaded, a picture of frailty and innocence.

"Sophie, don't beg her," Lawrence said, then turned to me. "Nadine, meet me at the courthouse tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. If you don't, we'll take legal action. Get out—I don't want to see you for another second!"

With that, he shoved me out of the ward.

"Lawrence, you've only forgotten me temporarily. I'll get experts to treat you. Once you remember, you'll regret everything you've said today," I said with confidence, though it was as much to myself as to him.

However, I never expected it was all a lie.

Due to the wedding scandal, the Henwood Group's stock price began to plummet. This was precisely why I had sold my shares in advance.Former partners quickly canceled their contracts, and without new projects, the company teetered on the brink of bankruptcy. My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of my phone ringing. It was Lawrence."Nadine, I want to transfer the Henwood Group to you. After all, it represents years of our hard work," he said."There's no need. A company like the Henwood Group, now rotten to its core, doesn't deserve to exist," I replied."Nadine, for the sake of what we once had, please save it. I can't bear to see it fall apart under my leadership. I promise to leave it entirely and never return," Lawrence pleaded."If that's the case, sell me your shares at market price. Afterward, the Henwood Group will have nothing to do with you," I proposed. He agreed, "Alright... I'm sorry."…I bought the Henwood Group at a low price and merged it into Coolidge C

"You're insane!" Lawrence roared."Insane? Reality drove me insane! Why is life so unfair? Some people are born into wealth, while I was born into poverty and abuse."From the moment I was born, I was a 'worthless girl'—eating scraps, doing the hardest work, and getting beaten by my parents just for existing. My only purpose, in their eyes, was to serve my younger brother," Sophie retorted bitterly."When they needed money for his wedding, they were ready to sell me to a 60-year-old bachelor for a bride price. Even letting me go to school was just a way to fetch a higher price."If they couldn't pay for his wedding, I'd have been sold to that old man. What choice did I have? Selling myself was the quickest way to survive."She continued, her voice thick with grief. "And guess what? The richer the client, the sicker and more perverted they were."When I found out I was infected, I had an epiphany. My life was already ruined. If I could take some of you down with me, it'd be worth

Sophie crawled to Lawrence's feet, clutching his pants and begging, "Lawrence, my stomach hurts so much... Please... save my baby."Lawrence kicked her away. "Do you think I'm a fool? You destroyed my family, ruined my reputation, and turned me into a laughingstock in our circle. And now you want my help? How dare you?!"He snapped, "I wish I could kill you! Turning a blind eye is already the greatest mercy I can offer. Deal with it yourself!""Hah, Lawrence, you self-righteous jerk. Do you really think you're any better than me? You couldn't resist temptation, got bored of your wife, and even faked amnesia to abandon her. If you had been firm and loyal, could I have had any chance to seduce you?" Sophie retorted. The facade was gone, and Lawrence was furious."Shut your mouth!" he shouted at Sophie, then turned to me. "Nadine, I regret it... I shouldn't have—"I was startled to hear my name amidst the drama.I quickly cut him off, "There's no such thing as regret. And she's rig

On the day of the wedding, I attended as promised, dressed to perfection. The lavish, romantic decorations tugged at something deep in my heart. I couldn't help but recall our own wedding.I remembered the night before—how Lawrence had been so excited he couldn't sleep. He woke up early the next day, meticulously preparing himself. He paid attention to every detail, even down to the last strand of his hair."This is the most important and happiest day of my life," he had said. "I need to show up looking my absolute best."When we exchanged rings, he held me tightly, crying uncontrollably. "Honey, I finally married you. We finally have a home together."Back then, his eyes were filled with pure love.Now... the difference between love and indifference was painfully stark.Exhaling deeply, I pushed the sadness away. What was gone was gone—let the wind carry it.The ceremony began.Sophie walked in, dressed in a custom designer wedding gown, arm-in-arm with the dashing Lawrence.

The next day, we finalized our divorce.Sophie arrived, dressed in her designer best—a Chanel suit, an expensive watch, and a diamond necklace. The entire outfit likely cost over 100,000 dollars, the most a newly minted graduate like her could have. It was clear that Lawrence had spared no expense on her."Nadine, you absolutely must come to our wedding," Sophie said, her voice dripping with provocation.I smiled. "Don't worry. I wouldn't miss it for the world. I'll even bring you a special gift.""There's no need to put on a brave face, Nadine," she said mockingly. "I know you must be devastated. But love can't be forced. Take care of yourself."I couldn't be bothered to argue further. I simply got in my car and drove off.…Back home, I quickly packed my belongings and listed both of our marital homes for sale. The thought of what had happened there made me feel sick.As for Lawrence's things, I told him he could come and collect them if he wished. Whether he did or not was

As soon as I got home, I received a call from Lawrence."Nadine, are you done? I've already forgotten about you. Let's stop torturing each other, alright?" he asked."Okay," I answered without hesitation."What did you just say?" Lawrence asked, disbelief evident in his voice."I agree to the divorce. You can have your lawyer draft the divorce papers as soon as possible," I replied. There was a pause on the other end of the line before he asked, "Why did you suddenly agree?"For some reason, Lawrence sounded a bit disappointed.I couldn't help but scoff. "Lawrence, you've been the one pushing for this divorce. Why are you acting surprised now?"You should hurry and finalize the papers before I change my mind. Otherwise, I can't promise what I might do next."Before he could respond, I hung up.…By 8:00 a.m. the next morning, Lawrence showed up with the papers in hand.He couldn't wait, could he?"Take a look. If everything seems fine, just sign it," he said flatly. When
