“I-I’m fine.” I tried to stand up with all my strength.
“Are you crying? Are you hurt?” Mike asked. I forgot I had been crying hard and now Mike saw everything.
“It’s just a minor sprain. But I’m fine. Can you help me stand up?” Mike took my hand and helped me stand up.
Damn! I wanted to spy on them, but nothing went according to plan. But maybe Mike’s sudden arrival caught Jason and Bella in the act of oral sex.
After I was strong enough to stand, I said goodbye to Mike and thanked him. But when I pressed the elevator button, Mike, who was curious, asked again. “Why were you on the fifth floor?”
“Oh, I was at Jennifer’s apartment on the fourth floor. I originally intended to burn some calories by using the emergency stairs to go down to the fourth floor. But I slipped and fell here. I know this is embarrassing,” I replied.
“I thought you were visiting Bella. Sorry for asking so many questions. Get well soon and good night,” he replied while picking up two large packages that were lying on the floor.
As he was about to leave, I deliberately stopped him. “Mr. Turner, are you taking Emma to school tomorrow? If so, there’s something I’d like to discuss with you.”
He turned around and looked like he was thinking for a moment. “Bella is supposed to take Emma, but I’ll take her tomorrow so we can talk.”
“Thank you. Good night.”
After returning home, I waited for Jason in my room. I put the dinner I had cooked earlier in the refrigerator.
A few moments later, I heard the front door open and lock. Feeling sick, disgusted, and angry, I didn’t want to see Jason’s face. So, I lay down and close my eyes, hoping to fall asleep soon.
I heard the bedroom door open. Jason put his bag on the sofa and then turned on the bathroom light. Just before taking a shower, he climbed onto the bed and kissed me on the cheek. Jason always kissed me when I was asleep.
Half an hour later, he was lying next to me, and soon after, I heard him snoring. We were like two strangers living and sleeping together while keeping our secrets. I was tired of living like this. I didn’t know who to blame.
The next morning, Jason talked a lot while eating breakfast. He told me about Kimmy and some of his other coworkers who had been caught sleeping on the job. He looked thrilled, and his face was glowing. Meanwhile, I was drowning in a sea of bottomless sadness. My heart was tired of holding on to so many painful facts about him.
After breakfast, Jason and Jensen got ready to leave, but I stopped them. “Why? I usually take him to school,” Jason asked with a confused look on his face.
“Just today, I’ll take him to school because I want to go shopping at the supermarket.” Jason’s face immediately lit up with happiness.
“Okay. See you later tonight. Bye.” After kissing me and Jensen, he hurried away.
When I arrived at school, I saw Mike waving at Emma. After Jensen entered the school, I approached Mike.
“Morning, Mr. Turner,” I greeted him. He turned and smiled. “Morning, Mrs. Howard.”
“Just call me Hannah. We’ve known each other for two years.”
“Oh, okay.” Then, I invited him to sit on a park bench.
“What did you want to talk to me about?” he asked curiously.
When we were close enough, I saw Mike looked older than his age. He had many gray hairs on his head.
“I am going to call you Mike. Is that okay?” He nodded.
“Thank you. So, what I wanted to ask is, is it true that Emma has had a heart condition since birth?” Mike nodded again.
“Then, how do you pay for the heart transplant while supporting a family with a wife who doesn’t work and you’re renting an apartment with a high rent? I’m sorry. I don’t mean to belittle you or your profession. Hope you understand.”
“I understand, and I know all the apartment residents must be talking about my family. Bella said an old friend helped with Emma’s surgery while her parents pay the apartment rent. I feel useless because I have no skills.” His expression turned sad.
“You have abilities, and I’m sure you’re a good father and husband.” I gently patted his shoulder. Suddenly, he wiped his eyes. It seemed like my words moved him.
“Thank you.”
“Do you know her friend’s name? If I may ask.”
“I didn’t ask her friend’s name because I was so happy at that moment when Emma finally recovered. Do you want me to ask her?”
I shook my head and waved my hand a few times. He smiled. “I trust Bella. So, I’ll leave everything for her. Do you have questions? Because I have to go to work.”
“One more question. Do you think it’s important for a husband to give his wife a diamond ring or bracelet as a birthday gift or something like that? I want to know your opinion.” I tried to dig deeper into his life with Bella.
He seemed to think for a moment. “It’s important to give gifts occasionally as a sign of appreciation if you can afford it. But if you can’t, I think a hug or a thank you would suffice, right?”
Dang! Doesn’t he know about the diamond Bella is wearing?
“But, it seems like you’re pretty romantic for buying Bella diamonds. I’m jealous of her because the diamond bracelet she wears is so beautiful. My husband rarely gives me diamond gifts,” I said, pretending not to know anything.
Mike’s expression turned confused. His forehead wrinkled and his eyes stared at me. “Are you sure it’s a diamond? Because I’ve never bought her a diamond bracelet or anything. I’m just a construction worker; how could I afford to buy her a diamond bracelet or ring?”
The facts Mike just mentioned reinforced other facts.
“I am sure it’s a diamond. You can check it later.”
“I don’t know if Bella has a diamond bracelet or ring.” Mike looked even more confused.
“Maybe it’s a gift from her parents?” Mike shook his head.
“That’s impossible. Even if they only rely on their bakery business. They couldn’t afford to buy a diamond. I think you must have seen it wrong. I have to go now. Talk to you later. Bye.” Then Mike hurriedly left the place.
HannahAfter showering and putting on our Christmas-themed pajamas, Chris and I hurried downstairs to join the others. That night, we were all wearing the same Christmas-themed pajamas, with the same pattern but different colors. The women wore red pajamas, while the men wore green pajamas. We also wore red Christmas hats.“Finally, you’re here,” Mark said.“We’ve all been waiting for you,” Mom said as she carried two large paper boxes filled with salty and sweet popcorn.“Hmm, I want popcorn,” I said.“Later. Now help us in the kitchen,” Mom answered. I joined Mom, Anne, and Chloe in the kitchen to prepare dinner. Meanwhile, Alice and the twins were to set the dining table. Chris, Mark, and Jensen set up the living room, which would be used for gift exchange and watching movies together. So, after the gift exchange, we would watch a movie together. We had agreed on the movie a long time ago. Therefore, Mom prepared popcorn, potato chips, and Cokes.I saw that the roast chicken in the
HannahAfter going to our respective rooms and lying down, I still couldn’t close my eyes. Chris felt the same way.“I’m still scared and shocked. I can’t imagine what would happen if something bad happened to Alice and Jensen,” he said.I hugged him and rested my head on his chest. “Me too. Everything was unexpected. Luckily, that man helped Alice.”“Yes. She must be traumatized. Would you mind keeping her company when you’re not busy? Maybe women can understand each other better,” Chris asked.“Okay. It looks like she’s getting close to Jensen.”“Yes, I saw them holding hands all the way. There is a lesson behind everything,” Chris replied. After that, we were silent, just thinking to ourselves. Destiny is unique and funny. After a tense event, a close relationship was formed. At first, Alice was cold towards us. But on the way home, she rested her head on Jensen’s head, and they held hands. An event connected a broken thread. I don’t know whether I should be grateful or sad because
Alice Walker“Sister?” I blurted out spontaneously.Jensen turned around and gave me a wink. I understood his signal. Together with the twins, we took a few steps back from him.“Please don’t cause any trouble and leave us alone. If you insist, we’ll call the police,” Jensen said. I didn’t expect him to be so articulate. But that wasn’t what moved me. It was his courage and attitude that amazed me.An unexpected reaction occurred. A group of five teenagers, all tall and well-built, laughed loudly. If I guessed correctly, they were high school students. Probably tenth or eleventh graders. Two of them had acne-covered faces and were slightly overweight. The other three were quite handsome and had athletic bodies like basketball players. However, I didn’t like the look in their eyes. It was a look that wanted to strip me naked. They licked their lips as if they thought I was food they wanted to taste. But I knew what they meant. I had seen eyes like theirs when my mom was hugging two men
Alice WalkerThat morning, when Ms. Hannah and I met at the villa entrance, I greeted her with an icy stare and attitude. I realized I had made a mistake. But I was only trying to protect myself and my family.I had indeed been rude and hurt her feelings. But I didn’t know her true intentions in pursuing a relationship with my dad. No one knows what’s in another person’s heart. I could only wait and watch her behavior. Grandma would surely tell me the truth. After that unpleasant greeting, I went into my bedroom and lay down. My head hurt, and sadness crept back into my heart. Why did my parents have to divorce? Why was my family different from other families? When I was little, I thought I had a perfect and happy life. I had everything that other people didn’t have. Grandma, Dad, and Mom spoiled me, especially since I was an only child and the heir to the Walkers Company. Of course, everything I needed and wanted was fulfilled. However, Grandma and Dad were quite strict and disciplin
HannahSince we had bought premium tickets at the carnival entrance, we could go straight onto the Ferris wheel. All the cabins were full, and the reason for our mischievous idea was that I noticed each cabin was very enclosed, like a small room that provided complete privacy for each passenger. Before entering the cabin, Chris bought two large Cokes, a large cup of popcorn, and French fries. After entering the cabin, we sat close to each other, leaning back in our seats without talking, just staring at the night sky decorated with many stars.“The sky is so beautiful,” I said.“Do you like this vacation?” Chris asked.“Yes. I’ve never been on vacation to a villa, soaked in a hot spring, or gone to a carnival, tried all the rides, and bought lots of food. Because my mother had little money, we prioritized the important things first. Vacations, carnivals, and snacks were just secondary needs that didn’t have to be fulfilled. To be honest, my childhood wasn’t very pleasant. I rarely tra
Hannah“Sorry to hear that. I didn’t know you had a tough childhood,” Alice said. Her tone was empathetic.“Thank you. Because my mom worked two jobs, I was to cook, while my big brother was to clean the house and put the laundry in the washing machine. I saw my mom when the sun had already set. She would come home, take a shower, eat, say hello to us briefly, kiss us on the forehead, and then go to bed. The next morning, I would prepare breakfast. That routine continued until we grew up and could support ourselves.”“What happened next?” she asked curiously.“Once our family’s financial situation stabilized, my mom only took one job. My big brother moved to Sunnyville to study and work. Luckily, he got a scholarship. I studied at Riverford and still live with my mom. Besides studying, I also worked part-time at a fast-food restaurant every afternoon until evening, five days a week. I used the weekends to sleep in, read books, and go out with my best friend, April. I didn’t expect tha
