Emma replayed the video three times.

Then a fourth.

Then a fifth.

Each time, the result was the same.

Her heart pounded harder.

Her hands trembled more.

And the fear growing inside her became impossible to ignore.

"If Emma finds out what really happened, we're all dead."

Daniel's words echoed through her mind like a warning she couldn't escape.

What really happened?

And who exactly was "we"?

Emma paused the video and stared at her husband's face frozen on the screen.

He looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Not angry.

Terrified.

That realization unsettled her more than anything else.

For two days, she'd convinced herself that Daniel was living a secret life with another woman and child.

The evidence certainly pointed that way.

But now...

Now something wasn't adding up.

A man having an affair didn't usually look like that.

A cheating husband didn't talk about people dying if the truth came out.

There was something much bigger hidden beneath the surface.

Something dangerous.

Something Daniel had spent years protecting.

Or hiding.

Emma leaned back in her chair.

Outside, New York traffic moved as usual.

People laughed.

Cars honked.

Life continued.

Meanwhile, her entire world was unraveling.

A sudden knock on the apartment door made her jump.

Her pulse instantly spiked.

She glanced at the clock.

Three thirty in the afternoon.

Daniel shouldn't be home for hours.

The knock came again.

Slow.

Firm.

Deliberate.

Emma carefully approached the door.

"Who is it?"

Silence.

A knot formed in her stomach.

The third knock was louder.

Emma hesitated before opening the security camera feed.

The hallway outside appeared empty.

No one stood there.

No delivery person.

No neighbor.

No visitor.

Nothing.

Her blood ran cold.

Slowly, she unlocked the door and opened it.

The hallway was deserted.

Completely empty.

But something sat on the floor directly outside her apartment.

A small black envelope.

Emma stared at it.

Every instinct screamed at her not to touch it.

Yet curiosity won.

She picked it up.

Inside was a single photograph.

And a note.

The moment she saw the picture, her knees nearly gave out.

It was her.

A younger version of herself.

Maybe twenty years old.

Standing beside Daniel.

Both of them smiling.

Holding hands.

Emma's breath caught.

"No..."

Her voice cracked.

She turned the photograph over.

A date was written on the back.

Ten years ago.

The same year stamped on the photograph of Daniel, Sophia, and Lily.

Emma's head spun.

That wasn't possible.

She had met Daniel eight years ago.

Not ten.

At least, that's what she remembered.

She looked down at the note.

Five handwritten words.

Memory can be stolen too.

A chill swept through her entire body.

She quickly looked around the hallway.

Still empty.

Whoever had left the envelope was gone.

But they couldn't have gotten far.

Emma rushed toward the elevator.

The doors opened instantly.

Empty.

She pressed the button for the lobby.

The ride down felt endless.

When the doors finally opened again, she hurried outside.

The streets were crowded.

Thousands of faces.

Thousands of strangers.

No way to know who had delivered the envelope.

No way to know who was watching her.

Or why.

Defeated, Emma returned upstairs.

The note remained clutched tightly in her hand.

Memory can be stolen too.

The words haunted her.

Could memories be manipulated?

Could entire years disappear?

The idea sounded insane.

Impossible.

Yet the photograph existed.

And she couldn't explain it.

Not rationally.

Not logically.

The sound of her phone ringing interrupted her thoughts.

Daniel.

Emma stared at the screen.

For several seconds, she considered ignoring him.

Instead, she answered.

"Hello."

His voice sounded distracted.

"Hey. How's your day?"

The question felt absurd.

How's your day?

As if her world wasn't collapsing.

As if she hadn't just discovered evidence suggesting parts of her own life might be missing.

"It's fine."

A pause.

"You sure?"

"Why wouldn't I be?"

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Almost cautious.

Emma felt her heartbeat quicken.

Was he suspicious?

Did he know she was investigating?

Then Daniel spoke again.

"I just wanted to check on you."

Something about his tone felt genuine.

And that only confused her more.

Because if Daniel was lying, he was doing an incredible job.

"I'm okay."

"Good."

His voice softened.

"I'll be late again tonight."

Of course.

Emma nearly laughed.

"Work?"

"Yeah."

A lie.

Or maybe not.

At this point, she wasn't sure of anything.

After hanging up, Emma immediately opened her laptop.

She needed answers.

Real answers.

Not anonymous messages.

Not mysterious photographs.

Facts.

She began searching old records.

College archives.

Yearbooks.

Social media histories.

Anything connected to her past.

Hours passed.

Then suddenly—

She found something.

An old university article.

Dated ten years ago.

Emma clicked it open.

The article covered a charity event hosted by wealthy students.

A group photograph accompanied the story.

Emma scanned the faces.

And froze.

There she was.

Younger.

Smiling.

Standing beside Daniel.

Exactly like the photograph from the envelope.

The article identified everyone by name.

Emma Lawson.

Daniel Hart.

Sophia Bennett.

All three of them.

Together.

Ten years ago.

Emma's stomach dropped.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Too warm.

Too suffocating.

She wasn't imagining it.

The photograph was real.

Which meant one thing.

She had known Daniel two years earlier than she remembered.

And Sophia had known both of them.

A sharp pain exploded behind Emma's eyes.

She gasped.

The laptop slipped from her lap.

The pain intensified.

Images flashed through her mind.

Brief.

Broken.

Incomplete.

A woman's scream.

Rain pouring from a black sky.

Bright headlights.

A road.

Blood.

Then—

A little girl crying.

"Daddy!"

Emma's eyes flew open.

The memory vanished.

Her breathing became ragged.

What was happening to her?

Why were these images surfacing now?

And why did they feel familiar?

Her phone suddenly buzzed.

A text message.

Unknown Number.

Emma hesitated before opening it.

The message contained only one sentence.

Stop looking into the past if you want to stay alive.

Her blood froze.

Another message arrived immediately afterward.

This one included a photograph.

Emma clicked it open.

And nearly dropped the phone.

The image had clearly been taken minutes ago.

From outside her apartment building.

Someone had photographed her standing at her own living room window.

Watching.

Waiting.

Monitoring her.

The realization sent terror through every nerve in her body.

She wasn't investigating alone anymore.

Someone knew exactly where she was.

Someone was watching every move she made.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown caller.

Emma stared at it.

The screen seemed to glow in the darkening room.

Ring.

Ring.

Ring.

With shaking fingers, she answered.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a man's voice emerged.

Low.

Urgent.

Terrified.

"Emma, listen carefully."

Her heart stopped.

She knew that voice.

Somehow, she knew it.

But before she could place it, the stranger continued.

"You don't have much tim

e."

"What?"

"If Daniel finds you first, you'll never remember what happened."

Emma's breath caught.

"What are you talking about?"

The man ignored the question.

Instead, he said five words that shattered everything she thought she knew.

"Daniel Hart isn't your husband."

The call disconnected.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, Emma realized the truth might be far worse than betrayal.

Because if Daniel wasn't really her husband...

Then who had she been married to for the last seven years?
