Chapter 3

Author: Sugar Bun
I did as Edward directed and leaned back on the railing, prompting him to nod in approval. I pursed my lips in an act of playfulness after a while and complained, "I've been doing it for quite some time, and my clothes got dirty from leaning on the railing. I don't want to take photos anymore, Edward."

Edward eyed the railing suspiciously, stepping up to test it with a push right as I lowered the pot of roses. He had forgotten that I had over ten years of dance training and possessed incredible flexibility.

I quietly snuck up behind him and suddenly yelled, "Watch out!"

Edward was caught off guard and lost his footing.

I lunged forward to grab him, but I used too much force and sent him falling backward even faster.

In the next instant, a loud thud echoed.

Edward was sprawled on the ground below, his right leg bent at an unnatural angle while blood slowly pooled beneath him.

Those who witnessed the scene while passing by screamed at the horrific sight of him.

Victor and Mary, who had been pretending to sleep inside, rushed out of the room excitedly. "It actually worked! Let's take her to the crematorium right now!"

"Who's getting cremated?" I asked curiously.

Victor stammered, "A-A relative of ours who had just passed away. What are you still doing here?"

Mary shuffled over with difficulty. "W-Where is Edward?"

I looked over the balcony before crying out loud, "H-He lost his footing and fell from the balcony! I mean, I could inherit his estate once he's dead, but that's something only a heartless monster would do! I couldn't possibly exchange my husband's life for money—I'm too kind-hearted to do that!"

Victor and Mary were speechless, unable to offer a single rebuttal. They could only glower at me with sheer hatred, as if they wanted to tear me limb from limb.

After just a week out of the hospital, Edward was hauled off in an ambulance again.

He sure was tough to kill, surviving a drop from the fourth floor. He pulled through yet again after a day and a night of emergency treatment, suffering only a fractured leg, a fractured arm, and six broken ribs.

I let out a disappointed sigh.

Mary shot me a fierce glare. "You're the one who should have fallen off the balcony!"

I acted completely puzzled. "How could you be so certain that I'd be the one falling off, Mom? I really don't get it…"

Victor warned Mary with a pat on the shoulder and forced a smile. "Mary is only saying that because she's worried about Edward. You shouldn't take it to heart, Maddie."

I shook my head and replied, "How could I? I'm far too kind for that, Dad."

I only wished death upon someone if they wanted me dead first.

Mary prepared some soup at home and asked me to bring it to Edward in the hospital.

I downed most of it on the way over, then filled it back up with contaminated water from the hospital restroom toilet.

I pushed open the door to the hospital ward and found a beautifully dressed woman wearing an emerald necklace worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. She had a baby bump showing and was sitting beside Edward's hospital bed, acting overly familiar with him.

I placed the soup on the table and asked, "Do you have no intention to introduce her to me, Edward?"

Edward offered a sheepish smile. "She's Natalie Lambert. She works as a secretary in my company."

Natalie showed off the necklace around her neck, running a hand over it. "Mr. Zucker and I went to university together and have a great relationship. He's the one who gave me this necklace."

Edward shot Natalie a warning glare before turning to explain to me. "Natalie closed a few major deals, so it was part of her bonus."

Mom and Dad were the ones who had brought Edward's company all its business through their connections. Did Edward really take me for a fool?

I realized that everything Edward had ever given me as a gift was worth less than 7,000 dollars in total. I had thought he was simply used to living frugally after growing up poor, but now I realized that he just thought I wasn't worth the money.

I clenched my hands until my fingernails dug into my palms, the pain snapping me out of my rage.

Natalie supported her lower back and kept going. "It's exhausting being pregnant. I just hope the baby's father can get rid of the obstacle soon so he can look after the baby and me down the road."

I was the obstacle she wanted gone, but unfortunately for her, that wasn't going to happen.

Edward's mentally ill cousin was waiting for me at home, but I wasn't the one who was going to end up dead.

Victor and Mary returned home once they had spent all their money on Edward's medical bills, only to find that the apartment had already been sold. They finally set aside their pride and called me, pleading with me to have mercy on Edward. "Edward may have mistreated you before, but after three years of marriage, your history together should outweigh the hurt he caused. "We've seen what kind of person Natalie really is now, so we know you're the one Edward should have treasured."I remained silent for a while as I listened. I had no idea what I had done to make them think I was so forgiving. I had always been the kind of person who held a grudge and got even.Mary was still trying to talk me into it when I got to the hospital. "You two are meant to be together. Edward has learned his lesson, so just patch things up already and go back to being happy together again, Maddie."I scoffed. "You're being utterly delusional—even daydreams are supposed to be somewhat realistic. I have

Victor clutched his chest as he struggled to breathe, refusing to believe what he had just heard. "I'll never be able to live this down! Our family bloodline actually ends with Edward!"He pointed at Natalie and bellowed, "You shameless slut! What did Edward ever do to deserve this?"Mary's eyes were completely bloodshot as she slapped Natalie hard across the face. "That baby isn't even Edward's! How dare you take all the supplements I gave you! You'd better return them all to me!"Natalie grabbed Mary by the collar and returned the slap with even more force. "I only put up with you because Edward gave me money. I won't tolerate you anymore since he's completely ruined now!"Victor tried to kick her, but she kicked him instead. "Your useless son wasted years of my youth, so you're also to blame for how badly you raised him."Natalie gave Victor and Mary a beating. Once she was satisfied, she warned them, "I know all of your son's little schemes, which means you two are just going

Edward's expression hardened the moment he heard the Lawsons' demands, as if he knew that meeting them would cost him everything he had.I pulled up a chair and sat down with a smile. "They might be asking for a lot, but they did lose Larry. Isn't it just money at the end of the day? How could it ever compare to a human life?"Larry's parents nodded in agreement. "You're absolutely right, Maddie. You're the only kind one here, unlike the rest of the Zucker family, who are all rotten to the core."I was indeed a kind person. I was the one who told them exactly how much money Edward had, after all.Edward seemed completely drained of all spirit once the Lawsons' demands were met. He just lay there on the bed in complete silence, staring blankly at the ceiling. He burst into a wild, hysterical laugh once he spotted me, the one who had dropped by to enjoy his misery."You've ruined me and left me with nothing, but I will get my revenge. It's a fight to the death between us now. I wo

Mary grabbed my hand and said through gritted teeth, "Larry is considered mentally ill."I held my chest, barely hiding my delight. "If a mentally ill person kills someone, they can't be punished like a normal criminal. I'm quite grateful that I wasn't the victim! Otherwise, no one would have cared about my injustice."Mary flew into a rage and bellowed, "How can you be so heartless? Edward is your husband!"I shrugged like I couldn't care less. "In times of trouble, even married couples look out for themselves."I leaned down slightly to meet Mary's gaze. "Is it possible that this is karma for something Edward has done, Mom? He's been injured three times recently, after all. Why does it keep happening to him, Mom?"Mary's eyes widened slightly in shock.Just then, the ambulance pulled up, and the police officers loaded the stark-naked Edward onto the stretcher. The paramedic sighed heavily and said, "He's severely injured below the belt. He's very likely going to be rendered st

Upon hearing that, the neighbor exclaimed, "Have you lost your mind? We're only doing this for your own good!"In the end, no matter how loudly Victor and Mary protested, the police sirens still sounded downstairs. "What happened here? Who's the screaming man inside? Why is there such a strong smell of blood?""It's no one you need to worry about! It's a family matter that we can take care of ourselves!"Hearing the police officers' voices outside, Edward thought help had finally arrived. "Help! Please let the police come inside! Larry is hurting me! I'm so sorry, Maddie! Please save me!"Victor and Mary refused to believe it, convinced it was just Edward's way of throwing off suspicion. They were hell-bent on making sure that I was dead, so they did everything they could to block the police officers."We lost the keys! You'd better not break down our door. Otherwise, we'll file a complaint against all of you! How dare you push me! Is this how the police treat civilians now? How o

When I heard the elevator start up, I knew that Victor and Mary were on their way back. I stepped into the stairwell and hid myself.Victor laughed excitedly. "Do you hear that? Larry's making so much noise! That bitch must be going through pure hell right now! She managed to survive the first two attempts, but she's definitely dying today!"Mary was fuming too. "I put up with that bitch for four years. If it weren't for her parents setting Edward up for life, I would've straightened her out on day one. "She wouldn't do any of the wedding traditions—wouldn't toast to us or join in on any of the wedding games. She just acted like she was too good for it!"I clutched my chest, trying desperately to hold back the rage burning inside me. Mary's version of wedding traditions wasn't just a little harmless teasing. She was mentioning the kind of hazing that went on at weddings that had actually made the news—stripping the bride down and groping the bridesmaids. Why should I have to go
