Chapter 1

After the parent-child activity ended, the other parents gradually filed out of the classroom with their children.

I was just leading Evan Jepsen toward the door when his teacher, Beatrice Woods, stopped me.

"Ms. Sewall," she began, a troubled look on her face. "Evan hasn't been himself lately."

My heart sank.

"What's wrong?"

"He's been using his building blocks as a pretend phone, sitting by himself in a corner and practicing what to say," Beatrice replied, sighing. "When I asked him what he was doing, he told me he wanted to keep practicing until his dad stopped finding him annoying."

That reminded me of one time when Evan approached Xavier Jepsen with a toy spaceship he'd just finished assembling.

"Think about what you want to say and get to the point," Xavier said, not even bothering to look up. "I don't have time to listen to you ramble."

My heart had ached for Evan. I'd tried to explain for him, but Xavier had cut me off, too.

"Handle something this trivial yourself. Don't waste my time with every little thing."

Yet, that very night, when Annette Borden called to say she couldn't sleep, Xavier had canceled a meeting and spent two whole hours talking to her.

When I finished speaking with the teacher, Evan immediately got up from where he'd been waiting nearby.

"Mommy, did I say something wrong?" he asked, his voice barely audible.

I pulled him into my arms, my throat tightening until I couldn't find the words to comfort him.

Evan rested his head on my shoulder for a while before carefully folding his drawing and slipping it into his backpack.

As we reached the kindergarten entrance, a black sedan pulled up in front of us. Xavier stepped out, and Evan's face immediately lit up.

"Daddy! I drew something today. Look!"

He hurriedly rummaged through his backpack, tugging at the zipper so frantically that it nearly broke, but Xavier didn't even take the drawing from him.

"Put it away for now, and be careful not to damage it," he said, pressing a hand against the bag. "I'll look at it tonight."

Then he turned to me and held out his hand.

"Give me the car keys."

I stared at him in disbelief.

"Did you come all the way here just to get the keys?"

"Annette's car is in the shop, and she needs one today," he said. "I was passing by anyway."

Evan's hand, still holding the drawing, slowly fell to his side. But he wasn't willing to give up yet.

"Daddy, you promised you'd work on a puzzle with me tonight," he asked, looking up at Xavier. "Are you still coming?"

Xavier glanced at his phone and replied without skipping a beat, "Of course."

"Evan has a follow-up appointment at the hospital tonight to have his hearing checked," I reminded him. "You promised you'd come with us."

He frowned.

"It's just a routine checkup. You can take him yourself."

"His hearing hasn't been right since he had a high fever when he was three. The doctor said they need to reassess his condition today."

"I'm not a doctor," Xavier replied. "There's nothing I can do by being there."

I looked at him and let out a bitter laugh.

"Last month, you spent six hours at the hospital with Annette when she had an endoscopy."

His expression darkened.

"Tania, can you stop dragging her into everything?"

Just then, Xavier's phone rang.

Annette's name flashed across the screen, and he answered the call immediately.

"What's wrong?" he asked, his voice softening the moment he heard her. "Don't panic. I'm on my way."

Evan stood beside him, calling out to him softly, but he didn't even look at Evan.

He simply held out his hand to me again.

"The car keys. I'll head to the hospital tonight."

I remained silent for a few seconds before handing them over.

"Daddy!" Evan called after him. "You still haven't looked at my drawing."

Xavier had already turned and climbed into the car.

…

During the hearing assessment, Evan kept glancing toward the door. By the time the doctor removed his headphones, the hope in his eyes had faded.

After reviewing the results, the doctor looked grim.

"His hearing hasn't improved as much as I hoped. Has he been under a lot of stress lately?" he asked. "The high fever he had when he was younger damaged his auditory nerve. This isn't an ordinary hearing problem.

"His anxiety also needs attention. If he's under constant emotional pressure, it could affect more than his hearing. I'd recommend having his emotional well-being assessed as well."

I called Xavier multiple times, but he never answered.

After the divorce, Evan and I finally found some peace. He still had to attend rehabilitation sessions and adjust to life at kindergarten, but he slept more soundly than before. He no longer woke up in the middle of the night, asking if Daddy had left again. And whenever a phone rang, he no longer covered his ears in fear.I continued working at the children's bookstore. Every day, I took him to and from kindergarten, helped him with his hearing exercises, and sat beside him as he carefully worked through his homework.Whenever he felt ready to talk, I listened until he had finished. …One day, his kindergarten held another parent-child drawing activity. The teacher asked the children to draw what they most wanted to become. This time, Evan drew a tree. Beneath it was a cottage with its lights on, and he and I stood at the entrance."Why do you want to become a tree?" Beatrice asked. "Because trees don't have to run after anyone," Evan replied. "They can just stand the

Xavier asked to spend a day with Evan before our marriage officially ended.I didn't make the decision for Evan. After dinner, I asked him what he thought. "Do you want to go?"Evan held his cup and thought about it for a long time. "Mommy, are you coming too?""If you want me there, I'll go."He lowered his head, absently rubbing the rim of the cup. "Can Daddy leave his phone behind?"I told Xavier about Evan's condition for going, and he agreed. …That weekend, we went to the zoo. Xavier left his phone in the car and locked the doors in front of Evan. "I'm not answering any calls today."Evan didn't immediately believe him. He held my hand, keeping his distance from Xavier. Xavier didn't force him. He simply stayed nearby, carrying Evan's water bottle and jacket and standing in line to buy tickets. When Evan stopped to look at the giraffes, Xavier crouched beside him and told him about the animals. Evan listened without turning to look at him. When we passed a

Xavier didn't give up easily. He sent me message after message, telling me that our old home had been put back in order and that no one would touch Evan's room again. He promised that from then on, he'd focus on his family and make appropriate arrangements for Annette."So you still think taking care of her is your responsibility," I replied. He didn't respond for a long time. The next day, he showed up outside the children's bookstore and waited across the street. He didn't come inside. Even when it rained, he stayed there.Evan noticed him a few times, but paid him no attention and continued drawing. It wasn't long before Annette came looking for me. Wearing a long dress, she stopped beside one of the bookshelves. "Tania, what exactly do you want?"I put away the storybooks the children had returned. "Please leave.""Every time Xavier left, it was his own choice," she said, lowering her voice. "I never forced him to go anywhere.""But you knew Evan was injured," I s

I'd moved with Evan into the old house Grandma had left me. It wasn't big, but it was close to the hospital.Evan's bed was pushed against the wall, with storybooks and a box of medicine on the bedside table.I'd also returned to the children's bookstore where I'd worked before I got married. I spent my mornings organizing books and my afternoons reading stories to children.Once Evan was well enough, he started attending a local kindergarten. After school, he would sit in a corner of the bookstore and draw. He drew a dining table set for two, a little cottage, and flowerpots on a balcony. He rarely drew phones anymore.Evan froze as soon as Xavier appeared. He clutched my shirt tightly, refusing to look up. Xavier placed a bag of blocks on the table. "Evan, I bought you some new ones."Then he took out a children's phone. "You can call me directly with this."The moment Evan saw the phone, the color drained from his face. I immediately held out a hand to stop Xavier. "

After I left with Evan, Xavier returned home. Most of our belongings were gone, leaving the house feeling empty and lifeless. He sent me a message."Tania, enough is enough. Evan needs a stable environment."I deleted it as soon as I read it. When my lawyer, Andrew Birkin, contacted Xavier to discuss the separation arrangements, Xavier simply replied, "She's just upset." Later, Xavier contacted Evan's kindergarten, only to learn that he'd taken a leave of absence. "Evan used to wait by the window for his dad every day," Beatrice told him as she handed him a booklet. "But when you never showed up, he eventually stopped waiting."Xavier took the booklet home and sat in the living room, flipping through its pages for a long time. The lights stayed on all night.…The following day, Annette began making herself at home, claiming that she'd been feeling emotionally overwhelmed lately and needed someone to keep her company. She moved her clothes into the master bedroom and sp

Xavier froze as he stared at the divorce agreement. His lips moved, but no words came out. He hurriedly contacted his assistant and finally found out where Evan was hospitalized. But when he finally rushed over, a nurse stopped him. The doctor said Evan was still in critical condition. Xavier tried to enter the intensive care unit, but the nurse blocked his way, saying it wasn't visiting hours yet. "I'm his father!" Xavier cried, his voice trembling with anxiety. The nurse glanced at the registration records. "I'm not so sure about that," she replied bluntly. "The hospital tried to reach Evan's father all night, but no one answered. You still can't go in outside visiting hours. Then we'll need to verify your identity."Xavier stilled in the hallway, clenching his fists as he looked at me. "I didn't know it was this serious," he said, his voice hoarse. I kept my eyes on Evan through the glass. "By the time you found out, it was already too late."The color drained from
