Chapter 1

Author: Leaves Fall
When the police found me, I could no longer walk on my own.

The ambulance rushed me to the hospital. The doctor on duty cut open my soaked pant legs and asked where my family was.

I gave him Blaine Zahn's number. The nurse called twice, but no one answered.

On the third attempt, someone finally picked up. It was Lizzie Sterling.

She said, "Blaine is taking a shower. Why did you call the police, Wanda? He just wanted you to cool off. Now, you've caused trouble for him, and he'll have to answer questions."

The nurse's face fell as she said, "The patient is suffering from hypothermia. We need a family member here immediately."

Lizzie laughed softly and responded, "Please treat her first. I'll cover the cost. Wanda, you know Blaine has an important meeting tomorrow. Stop using your well-being to scare him. After all these years of you pulling that trick in your marriage, it doesn't work anymore."

With that, the call ended.

I lay on the emergency room bed, my fingers still curled around my phone as if I were still holding it.

The doctor said that if I had arrived half an hour later, the severe hypothermia could have caused a dangerous heart arrhythmia.

It was 3:00 am when Blaine finally arrived. A thin layer of snow clung to the shoulders of his coat. In one hand, he carried a change of clothes for me and a thermal flask.

When he reached my bedside, he touched my forehead first before glancing at the IV bag.

"The police contacted me," he said.

I turned my face toward the window.

He unscrewed the thermal flask and poured out some warm water. "Have some warm water."

"No."

"Are you still mad at me?"

He set the cup on the bedside table. His voice carried the familiar patience he always used when dealing with something troublesome.

Blaine said, "I admit leaving you there was wrong, but there were cars passing along that road every day. You could have flagged one down. There was no need to call the police and turn this into a serious matter."

I countered, "The road was closed."

Blaine paused.

I added, "There was a sign indicating that the road was closed at the entrance. Not a single car passed by today."

He frowned as he said, "I didn't see it."

"You didn't look back."

Silence settled over the room.

Blaine pulled over a chair and sat down, pressing his fingertips against the center of his brows.

He said, "I handled the necklace situation too hastily. Lizzie is attending her homecoming banquet the day after tomorrow, and she doesn't have the right jewelry to go with her dress. Yours matched perfectly. She'd only wear it for one night."

"So you tore it off my neck," I murmured.

His expression had turned cold when he hooked his finger through the clasp at the back of my neck and yanked hard. The silver chain had dug into my skin. The clasp had snapped, and a thin line of blood immediately appeared along my collarbone.

Mom had made that necklace by hand. It featured seven silver stars, each a different size. The back of the largest star in the center was engraved with my date of birth.

After Mom died, I'd worn it only on my wedding anniversary and on the anniversary of her death.

Blaine knew that.

The first time he had fastened it around my neck, he had been so afraid of damaging the clasp that he had practiced for half an hour before putting it on me. But now, it took him only two seconds to break it.

Blaine lowered his eyes and saw the cut. He reached toward me but stopped himself.

"I'll have someone replace the clasp."

"Give it back to me."

"After the homecoming banquet."

"I want it now."

Blaine's expression hardened. "Wanda, enough is enough. Lizzie's brother died in a snowstorm while saving my life. She spent seven years alone overseas. She has nothing to her name now. Do you really have to fight her over a necklace?"

"That necklace was Mom's."

"She's only borrowing it."

"She posted that you gave it to her."

Blaine was silent for two seconds. "That was just a caption. You know I'd never actually give away something that belonged to your mother."

I looked at him. He genuinely thought that was supposed to comfort me.

For an entire year, Blaine sent one letter to Cole every month. He never pressured me to reply, and he never asked me to come home again. Most of the letters were about small things. He wrote that the breakfast containers at home had been thrown away. The entryway light had burned out once. He said he'd gone to Sirius' grave and, for the first time, told him everything that had happened over the years. The final letter contained only one sentence. "I understand now that you weren't throwing a tantrum that night."I set my drink by the window and walked to the front gate.Blaine had lost a lot of weight. Snow had settled on his dark coat. When he saw me, he instinctively clenched his hands before quickly relaxing again. "I came to return the key."He held out the last spare key to my cabin at Stargazer Mountain Resort. "No one can enter your cabin anymore.""Thank you." I took the key.He looked at the wooden sign above the door. "Have you settled in?""Yes," I replied."Do

"No," I said, answering Lizzie's question. Her eyes reddened as she reluctantly said, "He clearly loves you. He just never knew how to treat you right."I looked at her. "When someone is drowning, it doesn't matter whether the people on shore are debating whether they love her or not."Blaine approached from the end of the hallway.Lizzie immediately grabbed his sleeve. "Blaine, Sirius' death anniversary is coming up. You promised you'd go to the snowy mountains with me."He looked down at her hand.Every time she'd mentioned Sirius in the past, he had given in. But this time, he slowly pulled his sleeve free."I'll go pay my respects to him, but I won't go with you," he said."Why?""Because I owe him a debt. I don't owe you everything you want."Lizzie's face went absolutely pale. She tried to say something, but a staff member had already come to escort her in for questioning.Blaine walked over to me and handed me the signed divorce agreement. "The cabin authorization has

Lizzie finally admitted that she had deliberately damaged the necklace. "I just wanted to see what would happen. It was Wanda's necklace. I wanted to know whether you'd actually have the heart to blame me."She sat on the edge of the bed and said in a trembling voice, "In the end, you didn't blame me."Blaine held the broken piece in his palm. Its sharp edge left a thin red mark on his skin."What happened to her messages asking for help?""I deleted them.""Why?""Because I knew you'd go back the moment you saw them."Lizzie suddenly laughed. "Why are you pretending to regret it now? You were the one who made her get out of the car. She froze out there for four hours while you sat by the fireplace fastening that necklace around my neck. Even without me, you never put her first."The color slowly drained from Blaine's face. He didn't argue.Lizzie threw her phone onto the bed. "My brother saved your life. You promised you'd take care of me."Blaine responded, "I've taken care

On the day of our divorce mediation, Blaine arrived 20 minutes late.He saw me in the hallway and immediately quickened his pace. "Why did you change your number?"I said, "My old number was part of our family plan. I canceled it.""You could've transferred it into your own name.""I don't see the need for that."He looked like he was about to say something else, but Cole pushed open the door to the mediation room. The mediator asked us whether we were willing to proceed with the divorce."Yes," I said."No," Blaine said. The moment his answer echoed through the room, I looked at him seriously for the first time."Why?" I asked.Blaine insisted, "We haven't reached the point where we have to get divorced.""You abandoned me in the snow, took Mom's keepsake from me, used my premarital property without permission, and forged an authorization document. Any of those is enough to ask for a divorce, don't you think?""I'll take care of all of it," Blaine said, pushing a document

By the time Blaine followed me all the way to my apartment downtown, it was already dark outside. He stood outside my door, holding a box containing the seven-star necklace.I opened the door only a crack. "If you have something to say, talk to Cole."Blaine said, "I'm returning the necklace."I reached for it, but he didn't let go immediately."Let me come inside. We need to talk.""There's nothing to talk about.""Wanda, I've suspended the art exhibition at the resort. I'll also have the cabin restored to its original condition.""That's what you should do.""The reporters cornered Lizzie today. She had a panic attack and was taken to the hospital. Are you happy now?"I looked up at him. "So did you come here to return my necklace or to scold me on her behalf?"Blaine swallowed. "That's not what I meant.""That's what you always say, every time," I responded quietly. The necklace finally dropped into my palm. The chipped silver star dug into my skin.I asked, "Did you se

The gates of the resort closed behind me.Cole opened the car door for me and said, "All your belongings have been moved out of the Zahn residence. Should we go to your apartment downtown or straight to your aunt's place?""The apartment," I replied."What about the cabin?""I'll reclaim it tomorrow morning."As the car drove down the mountain road, I didn't look back.An hour later, Blaine was finally done with the exhibition's opening reception. When he returned to the lounge and saw the divorce papers on the table, his expression barely changed.Lizzie followed him in. "Did Wanda really leave? Should I ask the driver to go after her?""No," Blaine replied, flipping to the last page of the agreement. My signature was already there. His fingertip lingered over the date before he finally closed the document. "Whenever she gets angry, she stays at a hotel for a couple of days. Once she calms down, she'll come back.""But she left her wedding ring," said Lizzie."She took it
