Chapter 2

Author: Leaves Fall
The next morning, my lawyer, Cole Jepsen, texted me the divorce papers.

When I opened them to review the documents, Blaine was standing with his back to me while calling his assistant.

He instructed, "Keep the police report under wraps. Don't let it affect Lizzie's homecoming banquet. And send Wanda another piece of jewelry she likes. She'll calm down after a few days."

I closed the document and forwarded it to a print shop. This time, I didn't want to wait for him to come and make it up to me.

When I finally got discharged from the hospital, Blaine didn't come to pick me up. Instead, his driver handed me a jewelry box.

"Mr. Zahn said you wouldn't be angry once you saw this."

Inside was a diamond necklace with a price tag enough to buy the mountain cabin Mom had left me.

Nevertheless, it wasn't my seven-star necklace.

I closed the box and said, "Take it back."

The driver looked troubled. "Mr. Zahn also said you have to attend Ms. Sterling's homecoming banquet tonight. Word about the police report has gotten out, and people are saying Ms. Sterling broke up your marriage. He needs you to show up and clear things up."

"Clear up what?" I asked apathetically.

"Tell everyone you only got out of the car that night because you were angry, and that Ms. Sterling had nothing to do with it."

So the necklace wasn't an apology. Blaine was trying to buy my silence.

The banquet was being held at Stargazer Mountain Resort, one of the Zahn family's properties. Mom had run a tiny six-room inn there when she was alive.

After she passed away, I included the inn in the Zahn family's resort, but I kept the wooden cabin in the backyard. Blaine had once told me it would always be a place I could return to.

By the time I arrived, the banquet was already underway.

Lizzie stood in the middle of the crowd in a white dress, with the seven silver stars resting against her collarbone. The clasp had been replaced, but the center star had a noticeable scratch across it.

Blaine was standing beside her.

When he saw me walk in, his eyes immediately fell to my thin shoes and socks. "Didn't the doctor tell you to keep warm?"

He took off his coat and held it out to me. Right away, Lizzie sneezed beside him. His hand stopped in midair. A moment later, he draped the coat over her shoulders instead.

He commented, "It's cold up here. Why didn't you wear something warmer?"

Lizzie pulled the coat tighter around herself and looked at me apologetically. "I'm sorry, Wanda. Blaine was just being thoughtful. Don't take it the wrong way."

People around us laughed awkwardly, trying to smooth things over.

"Taking care of Lizzie has practically become second nature to Mr. Zahn."

"If it weren't for that accident back then, maybe they would've ended up together."

Blaine's voice remained indifferent. "That's in the past. Don't make assumptions."

He didn't deny the last part.

Soon, the host invited me onto the stage. A microphone was placed in my hand. Down below, Blaine looked up at me and gave me a slight nod.

It was his usual way of handling things. He never needed to give me an order. With one look from him, I was supposed to clean up whatever mess he left behind.

I gripped the microphone and began, "About the police report that night when it snowed..."

Lizzie nervously grabbed Blaine's sleeve.

He patted her hand and said reassuringly, "Don't be afraid. She knows what she's doing."

I watched the gesture and continued, "The police will handle the matter according to the facts. The surveillance footage and statements clearly show who left me on a road that had been closed and who took my personal property."

The room fell completely silent.

Blaine's face darkened. "Wanda."

I lowered the microphone and went on, "And there's one more thing—that necklace wasn't a gift. Please return it to me now, Ms. Sterling."

Lizzie's eyes immediately reddened. "Blaine said I could wear it until the banquet was over. I didn't know it meant that much to you."

"Well, it's over now," I said, holding out my hand.

She didn't move. Blaine, however, stepped onto the stage and positioned himself between us.

He lowered his voice and hissed, "Everyone is watching. Do you really have to humiliate her in front of all these people?"

I shot back, "I was the one left out in the snow."

"I already apologized, and I compensated you."

"So I'm supposed to lie for you?"

He caught me by the wrist. His grip wasn't hard, but it kept me from moving forward.

Blaine commanded, "You're still recovering. Go upstairs and rest. I'll give you the necklace tomorrow."

"I want to go back to my cabin," I said firmly.

His gaze flickered. "You can't stay there for now."

"Why?"

Lizzie quietly explained, "Blaine is turning it into my studio. The workers just moved in today, so it might be a little messy."

There were only two keys to Mom's cabin. I had one, and I had handed the other one to Blaine on our wedding day.

I looked at him and questioned, "Did you agree to this?"

Blaine explained, "Lizzie needs a quiet place to start over. The cabin has been empty for three years, and you hardly ever go back."

I retorted, "That's because you told me the mountain roads were dangerous and wouldn't let me come here alone."

He released my wrist.

His tone was calm and almost matter-of-fact as he said, "If you're not going to live there, there's no point letting it sit empty."

A row of newly installed lights illuminated the backyard. Under their glow, workers were removing the wooden sign Mom had personally nailed to the cabin door.

For an entire year, Blaine sent one letter to Cole every month. He never pressured me to reply, and he never asked me to come home again. Most of the letters were about small things. He wrote that the breakfast containers at home had been thrown away. The entryway light had burned out once. He said he'd gone to Sirius' grave and, for the first time, told him everything that had happened over the years. The final letter contained only one sentence. "I understand now that you weren't throwing a tantrum that night."I set my drink by the window and walked to the front gate.Blaine had lost a lot of weight. Snow had settled on his dark coat. When he saw me, he instinctively clenched his hands before quickly relaxing again. "I came to return the key."He held out the last spare key to my cabin at Stargazer Mountain Resort. "No one can enter your cabin anymore.""Thank you." I took the key.He looked at the wooden sign above the door. "Have you settled in?""Yes," I replied."Do

"No," I said, answering Lizzie's question. Her eyes reddened as she reluctantly said, "He clearly loves you. He just never knew how to treat you right."I looked at her. "When someone is drowning, it doesn't matter whether the people on shore are debating whether they love her or not."Blaine approached from the end of the hallway.Lizzie immediately grabbed his sleeve. "Blaine, Sirius' death anniversary is coming up. You promised you'd go to the snowy mountains with me."He looked down at her hand.Every time she'd mentioned Sirius in the past, he had given in. But this time, he slowly pulled his sleeve free."I'll go pay my respects to him, but I won't go with you," he said."Why?""Because I owe him a debt. I don't owe you everything you want."Lizzie's face went absolutely pale. She tried to say something, but a staff member had already come to escort her in for questioning.Blaine walked over to me and handed me the signed divorce agreement. "The cabin authorization has

Lizzie finally admitted that she had deliberately damaged the necklace. "I just wanted to see what would happen. It was Wanda's necklace. I wanted to know whether you'd actually have the heart to blame me."She sat on the edge of the bed and said in a trembling voice, "In the end, you didn't blame me."Blaine held the broken piece in his palm. Its sharp edge left a thin red mark on his skin."What happened to her messages asking for help?""I deleted them.""Why?""Because I knew you'd go back the moment you saw them."Lizzie suddenly laughed. "Why are you pretending to regret it now? You were the one who made her get out of the car. She froze out there for four hours while you sat by the fireplace fastening that necklace around my neck. Even without me, you never put her first."The color slowly drained from Blaine's face. He didn't argue.Lizzie threw her phone onto the bed. "My brother saved your life. You promised you'd take care of me."Blaine responded, "I've taken care

On the day of our divorce mediation, Blaine arrived 20 minutes late.He saw me in the hallway and immediately quickened his pace. "Why did you change your number?"I said, "My old number was part of our family plan. I canceled it.""You could've transferred it into your own name.""I don't see the need for that."He looked like he was about to say something else, but Cole pushed open the door to the mediation room. The mediator asked us whether we were willing to proceed with the divorce."Yes," I said."No," Blaine said. The moment his answer echoed through the room, I looked at him seriously for the first time."Why?" I asked.Blaine insisted, "We haven't reached the point where we have to get divorced.""You abandoned me in the snow, took Mom's keepsake from me, used my premarital property without permission, and forged an authorization document. Any of those is enough to ask for a divorce, don't you think?""I'll take care of all of it," Blaine said, pushing a document

By the time Blaine followed me all the way to my apartment downtown, it was already dark outside. He stood outside my door, holding a box containing the seven-star necklace.I opened the door only a crack. "If you have something to say, talk to Cole."Blaine said, "I'm returning the necklace."I reached for it, but he didn't let go immediately."Let me come inside. We need to talk.""There's nothing to talk about.""Wanda, I've suspended the art exhibition at the resort. I'll also have the cabin restored to its original condition.""That's what you should do.""The reporters cornered Lizzie today. She had a panic attack and was taken to the hospital. Are you happy now?"I looked up at him. "So did you come here to return my necklace or to scold me on her behalf?"Blaine swallowed. "That's not what I meant.""That's what you always say, every time," I responded quietly. The necklace finally dropped into my palm. The chipped silver star dug into my skin.I asked, "Did you se

The gates of the resort closed behind me.Cole opened the car door for me and said, "All your belongings have been moved out of the Zahn residence. Should we go to your apartment downtown or straight to your aunt's place?""The apartment," I replied."What about the cabin?""I'll reclaim it tomorrow morning."As the car drove down the mountain road, I didn't look back.An hour later, Blaine was finally done with the exhibition's opening reception. When he returned to the lounge and saw the divorce papers on the table, his expression barely changed.Lizzie followed him in. "Did Wanda really leave? Should I ask the driver to go after her?""No," Blaine replied, flipping to the last page of the agreement. My signature was already there. His fingertip lingered over the date before he finally closed the document. "Whenever she gets angry, she stays at a hotel for a couple of days. Once she calms down, she'll come back.""But she left her wedding ring," said Lizzie."She took it
