Chapter 1

The words carved into the wishing wall stabbed right into my heart. In that very moment, three years of love crumbled to dust.

Tears streamed down my face, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't stop them.

Their lively chatter continued to reach my ears.

Charlene Slater let out a long sigh of relief before leaning against Jacob Fowler, her whole body visibly relaxing. "We finally got rid of that jinx, and it's all thanks to you, Riley."

Jacob affectionately brushed the loose strands of hair from Charlene's face and tucked them behind her ear. "I'm sorry for everything you've had to put up with, Charlene."

All of them looked like they felt bad for Charlene, even though I was the one who'd known them far longer.

As I watched them pack their things, preparing to continue their climb, I forced myself to walk toward them despite the intense pain in my abdomen.

The moment Jacob noticed the tears on my face, concern filled his expression. "Daphne! Why haven't you gone down for treatment yet? Does it hurt a lot?"

He placed his hand on my stomach and began massaging it clockwise, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. His voice sounded loving and tender as he spoke.

I stared at him. "The staff at the cable car station told me that anyone who's sick or injured must be accompanied by a family member when going down the mountain."

Jacob's hand paused. After a long silence, he asked, "Isn't there any other way?"

I closed my eyes and let my tears fall. "No."

Simon Hoffman spoke up then. "Daphne, I know you can't do any strenuous activity right now, so how about this? We'll make it quick. As soon as we reach the summit, we'll come straight back down and take you to the hospital."

Riley White took me from Jacob and helped me to a gazebo on the side. "Daphne, stay here and wait for us."

Then she walked back over to Charlene without any hesitation. Charlene had a frown on her face, looking somewhat aggrieved. I didn't know what Riley said to her, but just a few words were enough to bring a smile back to her face.

The sight of the others getting along happily without me filled me with pain. It hurt everywhere from my abdomen to my heart.

My vision started to dim. I figured it was time for me to leave them behind.

The days continued to pass in peaceful serenity. Life was simple but filled with comforting joy. Then one day, a familiar figure showed up at my office.Jacob gestured toward me and said, "I want her to handle the negotiations."In the conference room, he handed me a contract. "I know you're at an important stage of your career right now. This deal will give you the boost you need to climb upward."The now-visibly skinnier Jacob continued, "I know I hurt you deeply, Daphne, but I'll do everything in my power to make it up to you."I shook my head and pushed the contract away. "Mr. Fowler, I think you may have misunderstood something. I'm at an important stage of my career as a result of my own capabilities. I have what it takes, and I don't need your help. In fact, what you're doing now is an insult to me."I stood up. "This is no different from how you always thought I couldn't live without you—just like how, even before you decided to hurt me, you already assumed I would forgiv

With the Labor Day holiday over, I returned to the office.Riley came to my desk with a bunch of skincare products I'd always wanted but could never bring myself to buy. Her eyes were filled with tears, and her voice was heavy with remorse. It was the first time she'd ever cried in front of me.She told me that after Charlene realized she had no chance with Jacob, she'd immediately gotten together with Simon instead.Riley cried her heart out, but she wasn't crying over the things she'd done to hurt me. She was mourning the end of the unrequited love she'd carried for a decade.I remained expressionless, offering none of the comfort I'd always given her in the past.Riley noticed the change in me, too. She lowered her head, not daring to meet my eyes. "Daphne, I'm sorry. I was wrong to trust Charlene. I'm the fool who fell for a snake's lies and got stabbed in the back. I'm already suffering because of my actions, so please forgive me, okay?"She pushed the skincare products tow

When Jacob found Charlene, she was curled up in Simon's arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Simon's hands hung stiffly at his side, but his eyes gave him away. They were filled with affection for Charlene.Jacob lost his temper and punched Simon in the face. The two immediately broke into a brawl. As the situation started spiraling out of control, Charlene panicked."Stop fighting! Please, I'm begging you! Stop!" Her tears fell once again, but this time, no one paid her any attention. In the end, Riley, who had rushed over after hearing the commotion, was the one who finally put an end to the farce.Jacob was still demanding answers. "I've always treated you like a brother, Simon, and yet you betrayed me?"Simon's expression shifted, but his voice remained firm. "It's true that I have feelings for Charlene, but I never betrayed you. You're the one who won't give up on Charlene even when you already have Daphne."He finally voiced the resentment he'd been bottling up this whole time. "I

The morning sunlight had only just begun to spill across the island when someone knocked on my door. I opened it to find Edna waiting for me. "Daphne, I've brought your new friend to meet you," she said.A handsome man stood behind her. She gave him a little shove forward. "Your turn to speak!"The man shook his head helplessly. "It's nice to meet you, Ms. Lloyd. My name is Carter Graves. Thank you for taking care of my grandma."I looked up at him and, for some reason, felt that he seemed strangely familiar. When he noticed me staring, a suspicious flush crept up the tips of his ears.Snapping out of my thoughts, I quickly replied, "I'm the one who's been imposing on your grandma."Edna's smile widened at our interaction. "Enough chit-chat. It's the last day of the Labor Day holiday. We must make the most of it."It really was a small world. I ended up running into Jacob and the others again at a lake. Now that Jacob and Charlene had come up with the story of wanting to reliv

Sunview Island was a popular tourist destination, known for the scenic views along its coast. Edna told me that this island was considered a must-see at least once in life.As soon as I got off the ferry, I heard Simon's voice. "See, Jacob? What did I tell you? Daphne is perfectly fine now, isn't she? She's even secretly followed us to Sunview Island!"Jacob walked up to me and said, "Daphne, I know you're upset, but Charlene is leaving as soon as this trip is over. I promise I'll cut off all contact with her after that. Just let me spend the last three days reliving the memories of my youth with her."Riley held Charlene's hand and pleaded with me, "Daphne, we've been best friends for over ten years, and I've never asked you for anything. Love is the most precious thing in the world. Can't you find it in your heart to do them this one small kindness?"I stared at the people in front of me. We'd known each other for so many years, but I was only now realizing just how much of a str

Jacob stiffened, his eyes widening. He was just about to speak when Charlene let out a shriek. Then her body went limp, and she collapsed unconscious onto the floor.Riley immediately grabbed Jacob, pulling him over to Charlene. He looked back at me, a hint of guilt in his eyes. "Daphne, wait for me to come back. I'll explain everything later."The rest of them scrambled to take Charlene to the hospital, abandoning me yet again. As my abdomen continued to churn in agonizing pain, I spat out another mouthful of blood. Fighting through the dizziness, I called an ambulance for myself before surrendering to the darkness.…When I woke up, I was already in the hospital. There was no one by my side.I overheard two nurses whispering to each other as they made their rounds."If they'd brought the patient in Bed 24 in any later, the doctor would've had a hard time even finding anything wrong with her.""Meanwhile, the patient in Bed 27 has gastric bleeding, and no one has come to check
