Chapter 2

Author: Sully's Dimples
When I snapped out of my daze, Jacob was standing in front of me. With a sigh, he explained, "We only get one Labor Day weekend a year, Daphne. I can't ruin everyone's fun."

He quickly strode off to join Charlene and the others without even waiting for my response.

As their figures gradually disappeared from view, I turned and headed back to the cable car station.

Along the way, I found a kind-looking elderly woman who agreed to accompany me, allowing me to take the cable car down the mountain without any trouble.

My phone kept buzzing with notifications about Jacob's latest social media updates.

The first was a group photo. Standing in front of the wishing wall, Jacob stared at Charlene as she bowed her head to make a wish, his eyes full of affection. Beside them, Riley and Simon looked genuinely happy for the couple.

The second photo was a group selfie the four had taken back at the campsite. They had a barbecue going, and exactly four servings of everything had been prepared.

I recognized the packaging. They'd ordered the meat from a specialty butcher who only took reservations. This proved that they had never intended for me to stick around on this trip in the first place.

The mountain air swept through the cable car, making me shudder.

Riley had handled all the trip preparations herself. She'd handed out new winter jackets to everyone else, but when she got to me, she'd awkwardly scratched her head.

"Sorry, Daphne. The store said they were out of your size."

At the time, I didn't want her to feel guilty, so I said it was fine.

But now, it was clear to me that she didn't bother wasting money on a jacket for me since they never planned for me to be a part of the trip.

I pulled my thin jacket tighter around myself and looked at the latest message in our group chat.

Simon just posted the bill for the mountaintop barbecue. The order had been placed two days ago, for four servings of everything.

He split the total cost by five, which came to 50 dollars per person. With trembling fingers, I sent a question mark.

Simon swiftly replied, "Daphne, Charlene said that even though you didn't come up the mountain with us, we shouldn't leave you out. We want you to feel like you're still a part of the group, so you should chip in for the expenses as well."

I let out a short laugh.

The group had excluded me from the start, yet when it came time to split the bill, I had somehow become an indispensable member.

When I didn't respond, Riley jumped in. "It's just 50 dollars, Daphne. You shouldn't be excluding yourself from us over a bit of money."

I tagged Jacob, who still hadn't said anything. "Are you going to say anything?"

Less than a minute later, Charlene sent a screenshot of the 50-dollar transfer she'd made to Simon, saying, "Stop arguing, everyone. I'll just cover Daphne's share too. I don't have a ton of money, but I don't want you guys fighting."

She even added a sobbing emoji.

Finally, Jacob sent a message. "Cover your own share, Daphne. You're an adult. You should pay for your own expenses. Charlene shouldn't be paying for you."

I didn't reply. I simply left the group chat.

By the time I reached the bottom of the mountain, my stomach hurt even worse. I called a cab and headed to the hospital. After the doctor examined my test results, his expression turned grave.

"This isn't just acute gastroenteritis, Ms. Lloyd. You have gastric bleeding, and you need to be hospitalized. Here's the admission form. Pay the deposit and complete the admission process so we can begin treatment as soon as possible."

The hospital needed a deposit of 3,000 dollars before I could be hospitalized, but all my money was in a joint savings account with Jacob. I couldn't withdraw anything without his authorization as well.

I had no choice but to call Jacob. The call kept ringing for what felt like forever before he finally answered.

"Well, well. Aren't you supposed to be busy throwing a tantrum, Daphne? Why are you calling me then? Don't you think you're being rather ridiculous?"

The days continued to pass in peaceful serenity. Life was simple but filled with comforting joy. Then one day, a familiar figure showed up at my office.Jacob gestured toward me and said, "I want her to handle the negotiations."In the conference room, he handed me a contract. "I know you're at an important stage of your career right now. This deal will give you the boost you need to climb upward."The now-visibly skinnier Jacob continued, "I know I hurt you deeply, Daphne, but I'll do everything in my power to make it up to you."I shook my head and pushed the contract away. "Mr. Fowler, I think you may have misunderstood something. I'm at an important stage of my career as a result of my own capabilities. I have what it takes, and I don't need your help. In fact, what you're doing now is an insult to me."I stood up. "This is no different from how you always thought I couldn't live without you—just like how, even before you decided to hurt me, you already assumed I would forgiv

With the Labor Day holiday over, I returned to the office.Riley came to my desk with a bunch of skincare products I'd always wanted but could never bring myself to buy. Her eyes were filled with tears, and her voice was heavy with remorse. It was the first time she'd ever cried in front of me.She told me that after Charlene realized she had no chance with Jacob, she'd immediately gotten together with Simon instead.Riley cried her heart out, but she wasn't crying over the things she'd done to hurt me. She was mourning the end of the unrequited love she'd carried for a decade.I remained expressionless, offering none of the comfort I'd always given her in the past.Riley noticed the change in me, too. She lowered her head, not daring to meet my eyes. "Daphne, I'm sorry. I was wrong to trust Charlene. I'm the fool who fell for a snake's lies and got stabbed in the back. I'm already suffering because of my actions, so please forgive me, okay?"She pushed the skincare products tow

When Jacob found Charlene, she was curled up in Simon's arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Simon's hands hung stiffly at his side, but his eyes gave him away. They were filled with affection for Charlene.Jacob lost his temper and punched Simon in the face. The two immediately broke into a brawl. As the situation started spiraling out of control, Charlene panicked."Stop fighting! Please, I'm begging you! Stop!" Her tears fell once again, but this time, no one paid her any attention. In the end, Riley, who had rushed over after hearing the commotion, was the one who finally put an end to the farce.Jacob was still demanding answers. "I've always treated you like a brother, Simon, and yet you betrayed me?"Simon's expression shifted, but his voice remained firm. "It's true that I have feelings for Charlene, but I never betrayed you. You're the one who won't give up on Charlene even when you already have Daphne."He finally voiced the resentment he'd been bottling up this whole time. "I

The morning sunlight had only just begun to spill across the island when someone knocked on my door. I opened it to find Edna waiting for me. "Daphne, I've brought your new friend to meet you," she said.A handsome man stood behind her. She gave him a little shove forward. "Your turn to speak!"The man shook his head helplessly. "It's nice to meet you, Ms. Lloyd. My name is Carter Graves. Thank you for taking care of my grandma."I looked up at him and, for some reason, felt that he seemed strangely familiar. When he noticed me staring, a suspicious flush crept up the tips of his ears.Snapping out of my thoughts, I quickly replied, "I'm the one who's been imposing on your grandma."Edna's smile widened at our interaction. "Enough chit-chat. It's the last day of the Labor Day holiday. We must make the most of it."It really was a small world. I ended up running into Jacob and the others again at a lake. Now that Jacob and Charlene had come up with the story of wanting to reliv

Sunview Island was a popular tourist destination, known for the scenic views along its coast. Edna told me that this island was considered a must-see at least once in life.As soon as I got off the ferry, I heard Simon's voice. "See, Jacob? What did I tell you? Daphne is perfectly fine now, isn't she? She's even secretly followed us to Sunview Island!"Jacob walked up to me and said, "Daphne, I know you're upset, but Charlene is leaving as soon as this trip is over. I promise I'll cut off all contact with her after that. Just let me spend the last three days reliving the memories of my youth with her."Riley held Charlene's hand and pleaded with me, "Daphne, we've been best friends for over ten years, and I've never asked you for anything. Love is the most precious thing in the world. Can't you find it in your heart to do them this one small kindness?"I stared at the people in front of me. We'd known each other for so many years, but I was only now realizing just how much of a str

Jacob stiffened, his eyes widening. He was just about to speak when Charlene let out a shriek. Then her body went limp, and she collapsed unconscious onto the floor.Riley immediately grabbed Jacob, pulling him over to Charlene. He looked back at me, a hint of guilt in his eyes. "Daphne, wait for me to come back. I'll explain everything later."The rest of them scrambled to take Charlene to the hospital, abandoning me yet again. As my abdomen continued to churn in agonizing pain, I spat out another mouthful of blood. Fighting through the dizziness, I called an ambulance for myself before surrendering to the darkness.…When I woke up, I was already in the hospital. There was no one by my side.I overheard two nurses whispering to each other as they made their rounds."If they'd brought the patient in Bed 24 in any later, the doctor would've had a hard time even finding anything wrong with her.""Meanwhile, the patient in Bed 27 has gastric bleeding, and no one has come to check
