Chapter 3

Author: Sully's Dimples
Jacob sounded furious over the phone, and Simon, who was standing nearby, fanned the flames.

"See, Jacob? I told you that you don't have to worry about appeasing her. She'll come crawling back to admit she's wrong on her own. We've put up with her for too long, and now she takes our patience for granted. She's nothing like Charlene, who's the sweetest, most thoughtful person ever."

My stomach was killing me. I could barely speak above a whisper. "My stomach is bleeding, Jacob. I need money to pay for my treatment and hospitalization fees, and all of my savings are in our joint account. I need you to authorize my withdrawal."

Before Jacob could respond, I heard Riley remind him in a low voice, "Jacob, don't let her fool you. Daphne only ate a bit of the ghost peppers I put in her food. Could it really be that serious?"

The next moment, Jacob's icy voice rang out. "Daphne Lloyd, you know I hate being lied to more than anything. We've really been far too tolerant with you.

"How dare you fake a medical condition just to ruin our trip? You're wasting all of our time! We're really disappointed in you, Daphne. Use this time to reflect on what you've done!"

The call ended, and the silence was deafening.

Without the deposit, I couldn't be admitted into the hospital.

I fished a debit card out of my bag. A long time ago, Jacob handed it to me with a solemn expression, saying, "I've saved 143,000 dollars in here. The PIN is your birthday. It's the money I set aside for our future."

Clutching the card, I stumbled toward the nearest bank branch. However, when I went to the counter to withdraw some money, the teller's response sent a chill through me.

She told me that there wasn't any money in the account. The 143,000 dollars had been withdrawn a month ago.

That was the day Charlene returned to the country.

I still had the written promise Jacob had sent me because of her return. Back then, I'd gotten jealous when I heard he'd gone to the airport to pick her up and take her out for a meal. When he found out how I felt, he wrote a long letter filled with his promises, just to reassure me.

He said that I was the only woman he loved. He promised that if he were to ever betray me, the 143,000 dollars in the account was his way of making it up to me.

I'd foolishly believed him.

Now I knew he'd already taken the money out even before he'd written those promises.

"I want to take out a loan." The pain in my stomach made my voice tremble violently.

Jacob had spent three years lavishing me with care and affection, but it was now a cage that trapped me in a sea of desperation.

My only chance of survival was to fend for myself.

I had to live.

The teller looked at me with a hint of pity in her eyes. Her hands moved quickly as she processed the paperwork.

By the time I'd completed the process, received the loan, paid the hospital bill, and finally settled into my hospital bed, two hours had passed. Slowly, the medication trickled through my veins. Only then did I realize that my body had grown numb from the pain.

As the tension seeped out of me, exhaustion took over. I let myself sink into slumber.

In my dream, Jacob was still as tender as ever. "Daphne, from now on, I'll take good care of you. No matter what happens, I'll never leave you to face things alone."

But later, the Jacob in my dream stopped saying my name. He called out Charlene's instead.

When I woke up, my pillow was soaked with tears. I looked up and realized that my IV drip had finished some time ago. Because I hadn't called a nurse in time, blood had already begun to backflow into the IV tubing.

"Let me call a nurse for you," the middle-aged woman sitting beside the neighboring bed offered. "Why are you here all alone?"

I turned my head. A little girl lay in the bed beside me, surrounded by family members who had come to care for her.

I thought of Jacob and the others, then forced a bitter smile and told a lie.

"I'm traveling alone. Everyone's too far away to come. But it's okay. I can manage on my own."

I didn't want any of them in my life anymore.

The days continued to pass in peaceful serenity. Life was simple but filled with comforting joy. Then one day, a familiar figure showed up at my office.Jacob gestured toward me and said, "I want her to handle the negotiations."In the conference room, he handed me a contract. "I know you're at an important stage of your career right now. This deal will give you the boost you need to climb upward."The now-visibly skinnier Jacob continued, "I know I hurt you deeply, Daphne, but I'll do everything in my power to make it up to you."I shook my head and pushed the contract away. "Mr. Fowler, I think you may have misunderstood something. I'm at an important stage of my career as a result of my own capabilities. I have what it takes, and I don't need your help. In fact, what you're doing now is an insult to me."I stood up. "This is no different from how you always thought I couldn't live without you—just like how, even before you decided to hurt me, you already assumed I would forgiv

With the Labor Day holiday over, I returned to the office.Riley came to my desk with a bunch of skincare products I'd always wanted but could never bring myself to buy. Her eyes were filled with tears, and her voice was heavy with remorse. It was the first time she'd ever cried in front of me.She told me that after Charlene realized she had no chance with Jacob, she'd immediately gotten together with Simon instead.Riley cried her heart out, but she wasn't crying over the things she'd done to hurt me. She was mourning the end of the unrequited love she'd carried for a decade.I remained expressionless, offering none of the comfort I'd always given her in the past.Riley noticed the change in me, too. She lowered her head, not daring to meet my eyes. "Daphne, I'm sorry. I was wrong to trust Charlene. I'm the fool who fell for a snake's lies and got stabbed in the back. I'm already suffering because of my actions, so please forgive me, okay?"She pushed the skincare products tow

When Jacob found Charlene, she was curled up in Simon's arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Simon's hands hung stiffly at his side, but his eyes gave him away. They were filled with affection for Charlene.Jacob lost his temper and punched Simon in the face. The two immediately broke into a brawl. As the situation started spiraling out of control, Charlene panicked."Stop fighting! Please, I'm begging you! Stop!" Her tears fell once again, but this time, no one paid her any attention. In the end, Riley, who had rushed over after hearing the commotion, was the one who finally put an end to the farce.Jacob was still demanding answers. "I've always treated you like a brother, Simon, and yet you betrayed me?"Simon's expression shifted, but his voice remained firm. "It's true that I have feelings for Charlene, but I never betrayed you. You're the one who won't give up on Charlene even when you already have Daphne."He finally voiced the resentment he'd been bottling up this whole time. "I

The morning sunlight had only just begun to spill across the island when someone knocked on my door. I opened it to find Edna waiting for me. "Daphne, I've brought your new friend to meet you," she said.A handsome man stood behind her. She gave him a little shove forward. "Your turn to speak!"The man shook his head helplessly. "It's nice to meet you, Ms. Lloyd. My name is Carter Graves. Thank you for taking care of my grandma."I looked up at him and, for some reason, felt that he seemed strangely familiar. When he noticed me staring, a suspicious flush crept up the tips of his ears.Snapping out of my thoughts, I quickly replied, "I'm the one who's been imposing on your grandma."Edna's smile widened at our interaction. "Enough chit-chat. It's the last day of the Labor Day holiday. We must make the most of it."It really was a small world. I ended up running into Jacob and the others again at a lake. Now that Jacob and Charlene had come up with the story of wanting to reliv

Sunview Island was a popular tourist destination, known for the scenic views along its coast. Edna told me that this island was considered a must-see at least once in life.As soon as I got off the ferry, I heard Simon's voice. "See, Jacob? What did I tell you? Daphne is perfectly fine now, isn't she? She's even secretly followed us to Sunview Island!"Jacob walked up to me and said, "Daphne, I know you're upset, but Charlene is leaving as soon as this trip is over. I promise I'll cut off all contact with her after that. Just let me spend the last three days reliving the memories of my youth with her."Riley held Charlene's hand and pleaded with me, "Daphne, we've been best friends for over ten years, and I've never asked you for anything. Love is the most precious thing in the world. Can't you find it in your heart to do them this one small kindness?"I stared at the people in front of me. We'd known each other for so many years, but I was only now realizing just how much of a str

Jacob stiffened, his eyes widening. He was just about to speak when Charlene let out a shriek. Then her body went limp, and she collapsed unconscious onto the floor.Riley immediately grabbed Jacob, pulling him over to Charlene. He looked back at me, a hint of guilt in his eyes. "Daphne, wait for me to come back. I'll explain everything later."The rest of them scrambled to take Charlene to the hospital, abandoning me yet again. As my abdomen continued to churn in agonizing pain, I spat out another mouthful of blood. Fighting through the dizziness, I called an ambulance for myself before surrendering to the darkness.…When I woke up, I was already in the hospital. There was no one by my side.I overheard two nurses whispering to each other as they made their rounds."If they'd brought the patient in Bed 24 in any later, the doctor would've had a hard time even finding anything wrong with her.""Meanwhile, the patient in Bed 27 has gastric bleeding, and no one has come to check
