Chapter 4

Author: Sully's Dimples
I spent three days in the hospital. In all that time, not a single one of them sent me a message.

Riley was the kind of person who posted practically every detail about her life on Instagram.

Out of a lingering sense of resentment and indignation, I checked her Instagram religiously. Sure enough, I had a rundown of everything they'd been doing so far.

Their itinerary was packed every single day. They visited all the tourist destinations, and each photo had a new background.

The only thing that never changed was the way Jacob gazed tenderly at Charlene whenever the four of them took a group photo.

Their cheery smiles never left their faces either.

My absence hadn't affected them in the slightest. After completing the discharge procedures, I took a cab back to the hotel we'd booked for the trip.

I found them in the hotel restaurant. They were about to dig into a hearty feast, with the star of the meal being a massive tureen of spicy seafood boil.

When they saw me, their faces went pale, and they stopped talking. I could see how reluctant they were to have me join them.

In the end, Riley was the one who spoke up to ease the tension.

"Why don't you join us, Daphne?"

She had always played that role in our group, acting as the peacemaker whenever conflicts arose. I used to praise her for it, saying she was the indispensable glue that held the four of us together.

But now, her behavior only sickened me. I stared at the spicy seafood boil without saying a word. The glaringly red broth bubbled and churned, filling the restaurant with the intense, pungent aroma of chili peppers and spices.

Once again, this was a celebration I wasn't meant to be part of.

Riley seemed to remember that I couldn't eat spicy food, but she still pressed on awkwardly. "You can just take a few bites. It won't hurt you. Charlene is about to leave the country. She wanted one last meal of her favorite spicy food."

"I already told you, my stomach lining was bleeding. I can't eat any spicy food," I said curtly.

As soon as I finished speaking, Charlene asked in a wounded tone, "Is my presence making things difficult for you, Daphne? I can't find the same flavors abroad, so I just wanted to have one last taste of it before I left."

Seeing Charlene on the verge of tears, Jacob immediately stepped in front of her protectively. "Daphne Lloyd! Didn't I tell you not to ruin our trip by faking a medical condition?"

Simon chimed in from the side, "It's just a bit of spicy food. You're seriously getting on my nerves with how difficult you're being."

Charlene shot me a taunting look. These people were my closest loved ones and lifelong friends, and they were all taking her side.

As if he wanted to prove something, Simon filled a small bowl with broth and approached me.

Realizing what he was trying to do, I backed away. "Watch it, or I'll call the police!"

Simon curled his lips into a mocking smile. "Oh? I didn't know it was against the law to drink some broth, Daphne."

He lunged forward at once, grabbing me tightly before he forced the bowl of scalding broth into my mouth.

I fought back with all my strength.

"Jacob… Help me…"

The burning spice spread through my mouth, choking me as it went down my windpipe and into my stomach. Through my tear-filled eyes, I saw Jacob standing there silently, not moving an inch.

I remembered how the old Jacob had cherished me as if I were his greatest treasure in life. Even the slightest hint of discomfort from me would send him into a panic. But now, he simply stood there, watching as someone hurt me without lifting a finger.

"See? I told you it won't hurt to have a bit of spice," Simon said with a smug expression while I coughed and sputtered.

Riley chimed in, "Daphne, I know you don't like Charlene, but that doesn't mean you should be lying to all of us like this."

My stomach burned with excruciating pain. Blood poured out of my mouth, the red patch standing out against the ivory-colored floor.

Only then did Jacob finally realize something was wrong. "Daphne! Are you okay? Why are you having such a bad reaction to it?"

His panicked expression looked like a complete joke to me.

Summoning every last bit of strength I had, I braced myself against the floor, raised my hand, and slapped him hard across the face. The sharp crack rang through the silent dining hall.

I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth and growled out, "I'm breaking up with you, Jacob!"

The days continued to pass in peaceful serenity. Life was simple but filled with comforting joy. Then one day, a familiar figure showed up at my office.Jacob gestured toward me and said, "I want her to handle the negotiations."In the conference room, he handed me a contract. "I know you're at an important stage of your career right now. This deal will give you the boost you need to climb upward."The now-visibly skinnier Jacob continued, "I know I hurt you deeply, Daphne, but I'll do everything in my power to make it up to you."I shook my head and pushed the contract away. "Mr. Fowler, I think you may have misunderstood something. I'm at an important stage of my career as a result of my own capabilities. I have what it takes, and I don't need your help. In fact, what you're doing now is an insult to me."I stood up. "This is no different from how you always thought I couldn't live without you—just like how, even before you decided to hurt me, you already assumed I would forgiv

With the Labor Day holiday over, I returned to the office.Riley came to my desk with a bunch of skincare products I'd always wanted but could never bring myself to buy. Her eyes were filled with tears, and her voice was heavy with remorse. It was the first time she'd ever cried in front of me.She told me that after Charlene realized she had no chance with Jacob, she'd immediately gotten together with Simon instead.Riley cried her heart out, but she wasn't crying over the things she'd done to hurt me. She was mourning the end of the unrequited love she'd carried for a decade.I remained expressionless, offering none of the comfort I'd always given her in the past.Riley noticed the change in me, too. She lowered her head, not daring to meet my eyes. "Daphne, I'm sorry. I was wrong to trust Charlene. I'm the fool who fell for a snake's lies and got stabbed in the back. I'm already suffering because of my actions, so please forgive me, okay?"She pushed the skincare products tow

When Jacob found Charlene, she was curled up in Simon's arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Simon's hands hung stiffly at his side, but his eyes gave him away. They were filled with affection for Charlene.Jacob lost his temper and punched Simon in the face. The two immediately broke into a brawl. As the situation started spiraling out of control, Charlene panicked."Stop fighting! Please, I'm begging you! Stop!" Her tears fell once again, but this time, no one paid her any attention. In the end, Riley, who had rushed over after hearing the commotion, was the one who finally put an end to the farce.Jacob was still demanding answers. "I've always treated you like a brother, Simon, and yet you betrayed me?"Simon's expression shifted, but his voice remained firm. "It's true that I have feelings for Charlene, but I never betrayed you. You're the one who won't give up on Charlene even when you already have Daphne."He finally voiced the resentment he'd been bottling up this whole time. "I

The morning sunlight had only just begun to spill across the island when someone knocked on my door. I opened it to find Edna waiting for me. "Daphne, I've brought your new friend to meet you," she said.A handsome man stood behind her. She gave him a little shove forward. "Your turn to speak!"The man shook his head helplessly. "It's nice to meet you, Ms. Lloyd. My name is Carter Graves. Thank you for taking care of my grandma."I looked up at him and, for some reason, felt that he seemed strangely familiar. When he noticed me staring, a suspicious flush crept up the tips of his ears.Snapping out of my thoughts, I quickly replied, "I'm the one who's been imposing on your grandma."Edna's smile widened at our interaction. "Enough chit-chat. It's the last day of the Labor Day holiday. We must make the most of it."It really was a small world. I ended up running into Jacob and the others again at a lake. Now that Jacob and Charlene had come up with the story of wanting to reliv

Sunview Island was a popular tourist destination, known for the scenic views along its coast. Edna told me that this island was considered a must-see at least once in life.As soon as I got off the ferry, I heard Simon's voice. "See, Jacob? What did I tell you? Daphne is perfectly fine now, isn't she? She's even secretly followed us to Sunview Island!"Jacob walked up to me and said, "Daphne, I know you're upset, but Charlene is leaving as soon as this trip is over. I promise I'll cut off all contact with her after that. Just let me spend the last three days reliving the memories of my youth with her."Riley held Charlene's hand and pleaded with me, "Daphne, we've been best friends for over ten years, and I've never asked you for anything. Love is the most precious thing in the world. Can't you find it in your heart to do them this one small kindness?"I stared at the people in front of me. We'd known each other for so many years, but I was only now realizing just how much of a str

Jacob stiffened, his eyes widening. He was just about to speak when Charlene let out a shriek. Then her body went limp, and she collapsed unconscious onto the floor.Riley immediately grabbed Jacob, pulling him over to Charlene. He looked back at me, a hint of guilt in his eyes. "Daphne, wait for me to come back. I'll explain everything later."The rest of them scrambled to take Charlene to the hospital, abandoning me yet again. As my abdomen continued to churn in agonizing pain, I spat out another mouthful of blood. Fighting through the dizziness, I called an ambulance for myself before surrendering to the darkness.…When I woke up, I was already in the hospital. There was no one by my side.I overheard two nurses whispering to each other as they made their rounds."If they'd brought the patient in Bed 24 in any later, the doctor would've had a hard time even finding anything wrong with her.""Meanwhile, the patient in Bed 27 has gastric bleeding, and no one has come to check
