A Twist of Events

What I was expecting was some sort of defiance. I half expected her to try to struggle when I lifted up her head to look at me, but then, instead of the fire that was burning just few moments ago in her eyes, what I saw this time around took me entirely by surprise. She wasn't looking like someone who was ready to fight. In fact, all the fight had totally drained from her and her shoulders drooped as that of someone who had already accepted defeat.

The most shocking part was that she looked at me with tears in her eyes, a pleading note in her gaze. I was taken aback for some time and I reflexively took few steps back, while trying to understand exactly was playing out. Was it one of her to tricks? Act beaten to get me to sympathize with her so that she could finally finish what she had started before now.
