Chapter 1

The water in the tank slowly reached my calves. I could hear Esther Kingston, my eldest sister, outside the door, pleading urgently, "Mom, please, just let Elmer out first! We can discuss the college application again later!"

She rushed up to Mom and grabbed her by the hand, her voice beseeching. However, Mom just gave her a side glance before scoffing coldly.

"There is no room for discussion. If you insist on going to a college out of state, then you can watch your brother drown."

She then took out her phone. I was in the center of her phone screen, curling up around myself at the bottom of the tank, my thin clothes all wet and soaked to the skin. The water was icy-cold and made me shiver relentlessly.

"Elmer! You're going to drown if you stay in there like that! Get out of there!" Esther yelled into the house.

I heard her and was just about to get up to push the cover off when I suddenly heard Mom yell, "Don't you dare, Elmer Kingston!"

I flinched and stopped at once, curling back around myself.

I didn't dare to go against Mom. I didn't dare to disobey any order she gave me.

If Esther and my second eldest sister, Emily Kingston, disobeyed Mom in any way, Mom would punish me so that they would feel guilty about it. But if I disobeyed Mom, I knew that she would kill me without any hesitation.

With no other choice, I just rubbed my hands and blew some hot breath on my palms to try and warm myself up.

"Mom…"

Esther's tears began trickling down her face. She gradually fell to her knees and said, "Mom, Elmer is innocent. You can't do this to him."

Mom replied nonchalantly, "I know that Elmer is innocent. But who told you to disobey me? It's only right that the youngest sibling bears all the punishment for what you did wrong."

Esther looked up at Mom with bloodshot eyes. "What do you want me to do before you let Elmer go?"

Mom lowered her head and handed her a brand-new application form for college. "Withdraw your current college application and change it to a local one nearby. I'll let Elmer out after you've done that."

Esther grabbed a pen and hesitated, her tears dripping onto the form.

I knew that Esther had been dreaming of going to that out-of-state college for a long time. That was her dream college.

However, when Mom saw her hesitating, she reminded her with a smile and said, "Not signing it yet? I don't think Elmer can hold out that long. After all, he's not had anything to eat in two days."

Two days ago, Esther had picked out the broccoli in her dinner, and Emily had also peeled off the skin on the salmon before throwing it into the trash. Mom's face darkened in an instant.

She didn't yell at them or scold them. Instead, she kicked me from the dinner table and told me that she was starving me to death.

Esther got a huge fright and hurriedly stuffed everything into her mouth. Emily also ran to the trash, rinsed the salmon skin under the tap, and ate it. However, Mom was still dissatisfied and said that she was going to teach them both a lesson.

And so, I hadn't had a bite to eat since then until now, two days later.

I could still hear Mom's voice outside the house. "I will only feed Elmer after you've properly filled out the form and withdrawn the other one."

Esther took a deep breath, gritted her teeth, and did just as she was instructed. Then, she tossed the pen onto the table.

"Happy now?"

Mom glanced at the filled-out form and smiled in satisfaction. Then, she took out another phone and pointed the camera at the completed form.

"See this, everyone? This is the most effective way to communicate with your children about their college applications. You can try my method too. I promise it works all the time."

Esther caught sight of the phone screen, showing that Mom had been live streaming the whole thing the entire time. She clenched her fists in anger.

"Mom! Are you seriously live streaming this as well?"

However, she couldn't be bothered to continue arguing with Mom anymore. She grabbed the house key to open the door. But Mom snatched it away from her and threw it straight down the drain.

On the third day, Mom went to the cemetery to visit my grave. There were plenty of flowers lying by my tombstone, and it was a very beautiful sight.Mom's eyes flickered when she saw the flowers all over the ground."I forgot to buy you flowers, Elmer," she said, nervously rubbing her hands together. You won't blame me for it, will you?"Also, remember this?"She then showed something in her hand, and I took a closer look before staggering back in shock. This was the handmade brooch that I'd given her for Mother's Day years ago!"I've been holding on to it for a long time," Mom said with a gentle smile on her face. However, I was mad and shouted at her loudly, "No! You don't deserve to keep it! You did such terrible things to me, so you don't deserve to still hold on to any gifts that I gave you!"I gave this to my mom! You're not my mom! You're a monster!"A sudden gust of wind picked up right at that moment, blowing the brooch in Mom's hand away and sending it to the middle

Mom was allowed to go home for a while the next day.The tank was still sitting quietly in the living room, as if nothing terrible had just happened."Elmer…" she murmured, walking toward the tank. "I was so foolish. Why hadn't I checked the tap properly back then? Why didn't I let you out and bring you out for dinner?"While speaking, she put the hose into the tank and turned on the tap. Then, she walked into my room.My exercise book, filled with lines from Shakespeare, was still lying open on my desk. She would even make me memorize the quote, word for word, and ultimately remind me again and again that I was nothing more than a dog. She wanted me to never forget it. I was the scapegoat, the "sacrificial" dog, whose only purpose in life was to serve as an example for Esther and Emily, reminding them never to make a mistake.Mom picked up my exercise book and flipped through the pages, her tears blurring out the writing in it. Then, she brought the book with her and went over

The incident caused a massive uproar online.Mom's livestreaming account was flooded with comments and DMs, with people cursing her under every video she posted. On the day of my funeral, many people showed up with white lilies and chrysanthemums in their hands, laying them down by my grave. I felt moved to tears. I didn't think that there would be so many people mourning me after my death.…On the day of the trial, Esther and Emily were seated opposite Mom, submitting multiple pieces of evidence of Mom's abuse of me at home. A chorus of murmured insults rose every time, but Mom just sat in the defendant's seat with a blank expression on her face.Esther then called out to her."Mom."Mom looked up at her."I've resubmitted my college application to a college in the farthest state from here. I'm going to be an excellent border control police officer. Congratulate me."Mom's eyes widened into saucers as she shook her head repeatedly."No way! You can't be a police officer! Th

"It's all my fault!" Emily wailed. "I said that I wanted to watch a horror movie with my classmates, but Mom found out and locked Elmer in a dark room with horror movies on loop to scare him!"She said that she wanted to show me what it was like to be scared out of my wits! She warned me never to watch nonsense like that anymore!"Dad slapped Mom again after hearing what Emily said. He shuddered while yelling, "This is how you treated my son when I wasn't around, Diana Crawford?"Mom had the nerve to argue. She fought back, shoving Dad away forcefully and leaving bloody nail marks on his face."Did you think I had it easy bringing up three children by myself? I would never have had to live like this if you were home more often!"Dad was so pissed that his chest began heaving. "You're saying this is my fault? I've been working my ass off, working overtime, and going on countless business trips, all for this family! I just wanted us to have a better life! And you're saying it's my f

"Elmer!" Esther screamed, lunging at me and trying to fish me out of the water with Emily.I was placed on the floor as the two police officers began giving me first aid, pressing on my chest repeatedly to try and revive me with CPR.However, I knew that it was useless. I had already died a long time ago."What the hell have you done!" Dad yelled, his eyes bloodshot, while slapping Mom across the face until her lips split and bled. However, she still stubbornly said, "This was just an accident! He was the one who went inside the tank by himself!"Mom was still trying to exonerate herself even at a time like this. I couldn't believe it."So, you're saying that this kid went into the tank by himself, put the lid on by himself, and then pulled a heavy TV over the lid?" Even the officers couldn't hold back their anger anymore."This constitutes premeditated murder, Mrs. Kingston. If you're found guilty, you're going to have to be executed!"All the color drained from Mom's face w

  • My Life as Mom's Living Warning   Chapter 5

Upon entering the apartment, the floor was completely flooded with water.Mom was still live-streaming on her phone, saying that she was going to expose her useless fool of a son for doing this. Then, she caught sight of the huge fish tank in the center of the living room, with an old television set on top of the lid. She had purposely put the old TV there because she didn't want me to crawl out of it by myself.Water was seeping out from under the lid.Dad exclaimed and hurriedly went over to shut the water off."Darling? Why did you take out the old TV and set it on the fish tank?" he asked. "And where's Elmer? Why isn't he here to greet me?"Elmer? Dad's home! And I've brought gifts!"Dad kept calling out to me while walking toward the fish tank, thinking of removing the old TV, when Mom suddenly yelled at him, "Don't move!"Elmer… Elmer is still taking a nap in his room. Don't go in and disturb him."Just then, the comments on Mom's live stream suddenly increased again."
