Chapter 8

Time seemed to pass with agonizing slowness inside that bedroom. I had tried distracting myself by checking my phone, reading a few pages of a book I'd found on one of the tables, and even gazing out at the scenery through the large windows, but nothing could completely erase the memory of those footsteps stopping outside the door.

As the hours passed, I began wondering how much longer I would have to stay there. Christopher had asked me to wait for him, but I had no way of knowing how long the

  • My Little Human Pillow   Chapter 17

That night, I was sitting on my bed, going through the acceptance letters I'd received from the colleges I'd applied to for the third time, when a soft knock at the door interrupted my thoughts. I set the letters down on my desk and leaned back against the headboard."Come in," I answered quietly.Christopher appeared in the doorway and carefully closed the door behind him. One look was enough to tell me that something was wrong. He looked dejected, his shoulders slightly slumped, and he wore that worried expression that only appeared when something was affecting him far more than he was willing to admit."Is everything okay?" I asked, setting the letters on the bed. "Did your parents give you a hard time? Are they angry with me for sleeping in their bedroom?"My last question drew a small laugh from him, although it wasn't enough to erase the weariness from his face."That's the one thing you're safe from.""Thank God," I replied, pressing

Christopher's question hung in the air, and for a few moments, neither of his parents quite knew how to respond. It wasn't the first time Marylee and Henry had wondered whether the relationship between their son and Mia would eventually develop into something deeper than the affection that had bound them together since childhood, but until now, Christopher had never openly expressed a desire to spend the rest of his life with her.Marylee exchanged a glance with her husband, aware that they had both spent years watching that little girl become an indispensable presence in their son's life. They had witnessed the peace she brought him, the trust they shared, and a closeness that, over time, had begun to transcend the circumstances that had originally led them to sleep beside each other. However, they also knew that Christopher had grown accustomed to having Mia available to him every night, and that it was important to distinguish between the fear of losin

  • My Little Human Pillow   Chapter 15

CHRISTOPHERChristopher had barely finished explaining what had happened when his father let out a sigh and leaned back in his armchair."We understand perfectly well why you're furious, son. What Serena did was unacceptable, but there are circumstances we can't ignore."Christopher frowned."What do you mean?""Antoine Taylor called me this morning. He's outraged by the way you treated his daughter and threatened to cancel the agreement between our two families."Christopher let out a humorless laugh."His daughter dumped white paint all over Mia and then threw a bag full of feathers at her in front of all our guests. And somehow, he's the one who's offended?""I'd be furious, too," Henry acknowledged. "But Serena has her heart set on you, and Antoine isn't exactly a reasonable man when it comes to his daughter.""That's not my problem.""Under normal circumstances, I'd agree with you completely.

  • My Little Human Pillow   Chapter 14

Blair's questions left me completely bewildered, not because they seemed absurd, but because I had just realized that I had never stopped to consider any of those possibilities. For ten years, my life had revolved around a routine that had eventually come to feel as natural as anything else, and the idea that it might someday change had never even crossed my mind.I watched her as I tried to imagine myself in any of the situations she had just described. The possibility of Christopher no longer needing me to sleep left me with a strange sense of emptiness, but I couldn't deny that Blair had a point when she asked what would happen if either of us wanted to pursue a romantic relationship with someone else."I've never even thought about that," I finally admitted. "I've been sleeping beside Christopher for ten years, and when I started thinking about college, the first thing that came to mind was that I needed to choose one close to home so I could come back every

  • My Little Human Pillow   Chapter 13

Neither of us had gone downstairs to see what the living room looked like after the previous night's disaster. We preferred to remain inside our little bubble for as long as possible, enjoying the peace we had found together, even though we knew that sooner or later, we would have to face the rest of the world. When we finally went downstairs, we discovered that the living room was perfectly clean. There wasn't a trace of paint or feathers left, although the atmosphere was uncomfortable enough to remind us that something unpleasant had happened there.Jeff was the first to approach us and struck up a conversation with Christopher, while I spotted Blair sitting on a lounge chair out on the terrace. Taking advantage of the fact that the two of them were occupied, I went over to join her.Blair set her phone aside when she saw me approaching and greeted me with a kind smile."How are you, Mia?" she asked with a sincerity that made me appreciate her company e

Christopher left me a large towel and stepped out of the bathroom to give me some privacy. I took off my ruined dress and stepped under the warm water, trying to wash the feathers out of my hair.It wasn't as easy as I'd hoped. The paint had gotten tangled in my hair, and no matter how thoroughly I tried to rinse it out, I kept finding little traces of it between the strands. After several minutes, I finally called for Christopher, frustrated that I hadn't managed to get everything out."What's wrong?" he asked from the other side of the door."Can you help me with my hair? I think I'm going to need three bottles of shampoo to get all this stuff out."I heard a soft chuckle before he answered."Give me a second."I wrapped myself in a towel and sat down beside the sink so he could help me. Christopher returned with another towel and a comb and began carefully separating the strands of my hair, removing the feathers that were still cau
