Gabriel’s POV
I was clutching Mira’s hand in a firm grasp.I needed her support. I would see my daughter for the first time in 15 years. I would witness my real mate’s body being burnt. I would need to talk to my daughter and ask her to come with me.To say that I was nervous would be an understatement. I was freaking out.“Gabriel?” I heard my name being called.I looked around and spotted my old best friend.“Jasper,” I muttered his name.He groaned and approached me and Mira. He continued strolling toward the funeral place along with us.“It’s Alpha Jasper to you, but I will let it go this time,” he added, peering at me from the corner of his eye.He was still upset with me. He never used to demand I call him Alpha.“This is my mate, Mira,” I remarked, glancing at her and offering her a little grin.“It’s nice to meet you, Alpha Jasper,” Mira responded pleasantly.Jasper looked at her and gave her a slight nod. He stared back at me and narrowed his eyes.“Why are you here?” he inquired.I swallowed and took a long breath.“Lyra called me,” I said. “She asked me to take care of Selene. I am coming to take her home with me.”Jasper stiffened his jaw and glanced away from me.“Selene won’t be happy,” he whispered. “She will refuse to go with you.”I could sense that he wanted to say something else. He started fiddling with his fingers. I knew that he did it when he was nervous. He was my best buddy for years. I knew him.“But?” I questioned, making him peek at me again.“But she will have to go,” he murmured. “Her financial situation isn’t good and there isn’t much I can do to help.”Shit. Cancer therapy undoubtedly costs a lot.“She is poor?” Mira questioned, making Jasper gaze at her wide-eyed.That wasn’t very nice, Mira. I mind-linked her.I just want to know what we are dealing with. She responded. We need to know how much it will cost us to take care of her.“She is in a little bit of trouble,” Jasper whispered, narrowing his eyes at my partner.I could sense that Jasper was upset with my partner for asking that.I sighed and looked around. So many people were heading to the funeral. Most of them were sobbing and hugging one other. It was evident that Lyra was extremely adored.I could see the grave site up ahead. I could already see Lyra’s body. It was wrapped in a white sheet. It was tradition. Her corpse was laid atop a framework constructed of wood. It would shortly be torched. The tradition was for the funeral to be held at night. The remains were burned because it was thought that the flames in the night would guide the departed route to the Moon Goddess. My heart tightened. I adored Lyra. I loved her so much. I simply wanted that my love for her had been enough to keep me here.My wolf fled totally. He wasn’t able to see his fated mate’s funeral. He never really forgave me for leaving. He understood why I went, but he always missed his pup. I knew that he would come back when I approached Selene. He would want to see her.I could feel people’s eyes on me. I could hear them whispering. I didn’t even need to hear what they were saying. I knew precisely what they thought of me. The warriors at the border almost didn’t allow me in. One of them recognized me and I was afraid that he was going to harm me. Thankfully, the other warrior mind-linked Jasper, who enabled me to into the pack.Their perceptions of me didn’t matter. I was here for my daughter. I was coming to take her home with me.Everything around me evaporated when my eyes landed on her.Goddess, she was lovely. She looked precisely like Lyra, except she had my eyes. Her hair was long and curly, and the color was the same as mine. She was a perfect combo of Lyra and myself, and she was lovely. She was looking at her mom’s body without blinking. She wasn’t weeping though. Her face was expressionless.“Is that her?” Mira asked.I nodded, without pulling my eyes away from my daughter. I wished that she would glance up at me. I wanted her would grin at me as she did when she was a baby.Jasper approached her and pulled her into a hug. He muttered something to her, and she nodded. She still didn’t look at me.“Thank you all for coming,” Jasper remarked as he let Selene go.He threw his arm over her shoulders and glanced at Lyra’s physique. Luna Maren approached Selene and Jasper. She grabbed Selene’s cheeks and kissed her forehead. I noticed a tear fall from Selene’s face. Maren grabbed Selene’s hand in hers and gazed at Lyra.“Lyra was an amazing woman,” Jasper remarked. “She was a wonderful mother and a great friend to us all. Everyone who knew Lyra knew how much she adored her kid. Everyone who knew Lyra understood how committed she was to our group. We lost a terrific she-wolf, but we are all better people because we knew her.”Jasper turned to Selene and asked her something gently. She shook her head. Jasper bowed and kissed the top of her head.He looked at someone in the throng and nodded.A guy approached the wooden building and ignited the wood on fire.I gazed at my kid. She closed her eyes and leaned her head down. A girl of her age approached her and pulled her into a hug.“Let the fire lead her way,” Jasper urged.“Let the fire lead her way,” I whispered.I heard folks around me reciting the ancient saying. Mira kept mute. I sighed. It was impolite not to mention it at a funeral.Mira. I mind-linked her. Say it.She stared at me but stayed quiet.I stiffened my jaw. I knew that I would have to talk to her about it later. I knew that Mira wasn’t too thrilled about my kid returning home with us, but she could have at least said the darn thing.I gazed at Lyra’s body. It was nearly entirely gone.My heart tightened. I hoped that I could have seen her one more time before she died.I sighed and looked back to my daughter. Her big eyes were fixated on me. She knew who I was. She had to know who I was. She recognized me. My pet knew me.I offered her a little grin.Anger flared in her eyes and she glanced away from me.Fear swept over me. Would my daughter even want to talk to me?Selene’s POV“What is my father doing here?” I asked Alpha Jasper. There was a stinging aching in my chest that was slowly being replaced by rage. I wanted that man gone. I didn’t want him here. He made his choice when he left my mom and me 15 years ago. I didn’t want him here. I didn’t need him.“You recognized him?” Alpha Jasper inquired, astonished.Of course, I did.“I have his eyes,” I muttered, wiping the tears from my face. “And my mom always showed me pictures of him. She wanted me to remember him.”She loved him so much. She loved him even after everything he did to her. He was her fated partner, who lied to her. He vowed to mark her, but he never did. He harmed her so severely, and I would never forgive him for it.I stared back at the flames.“I will miss you, Mom,” I muttered gently. “I hope that you are not in pain anymore.”My voice cracked and I stopped to take a big breath.“I love you,” I continued gently. “Please watch over me.”I still couldn't realize that my mom w
Selene’s POV“I am not going,” I muttered as I started walking away from my father.I had no reason to be there anymore. My mom’s body was gone. I wasn’t going with my father and I didn’t want to talk to him again. There was no need for me to linger at the burial site any longer. I was going to go home, sleep on my mom’s bed, and scream my eyes out.I wasn’t going with my father anyplace. There was no friggin way that I was abandoning my rucksack. There was no friggin way that I was going anywhere with that dude.“Selene!” he yelled after me.I didn’t react. I didn’t even turn around. The dude left me. He deserted my mom. I didn’t need him or his sympathy money.“Selene!” he called me again, but this time I heard him following behind me.I started walking faster.“Selene, stop!” my father shouted.I ignored him.My heart was thumping a mile a minute. I wasn’t leaving. I wasn’t leaving my pack. I wasn’t leaving my house. My mom’s stuff was there. I wasn’t going to leave the spot that r
“How are you?”Alex asked. I was lying on her twin-sized bed next to her. I should have gone home, I wanted to go home, but I could not bear the empty house. I thought I would find comfort there but when I walked into her room…so I ran over here, I ran over to my best friend. “I don't know. I feel numb.” I whispered. I had thought I would cry for hours over my mum but the tears had dried up and no matter how hard I wanted them to fall they stayed dried up. “I know you're hurting over your mom. I could never imagine what it feels like to lose your mother. But that's not what I'm talking about.” She turned over on the bed and faced me.“What are you talking about then?” I asked, genuinely confused.Alex cleared her throat and looked at me uneasily. “How do you feel now? especially after meeting your father.” She asked and watched me curiously. My anger returned swiftly and bitterness enveloped me like a thin shroud.“How could she do that?” I asked, my voice filled with bitterness.“How
I rolled down my window to get a better view of the passing vegetation. It was the most beautiful woodland I had ever seen in my entire life. My eyes flew wide open, I could hardly believe a place like this existed. Several rabbits hopped around fallen trees on the lush green forest floor. Huge trees grew so tall that it seemed they were reaching for the clouds. “It's beautiful isn't it?” My father asked. A large smile was playing on his stupid face. I could see his stupid eyes staring at me from the rearview mirror. I brought out my headphones and immersed myself in a world of heavy metal. My father was saying something but I could not hear a word of what he said. The smell of the woodland filled my soul with a peculiar energy, one I had never felt before. I longed to run through the trees, play on the grass, and hop along with the rabbits. 'Eat the rabbits.’ a voice said. I looked up at my Father but he had his eyes on the road and didn't seem to have said a word.I pulled the
The morning breeze had been a thing of comfort to me, its cool message of guidance and love had been mind-soothing. That man, Gabriel had returned and once again my peace was gone.“Hi.” The girl said. I was guessing this was his daughter, she had his hair and I could see a bit of him in her. Just a bit.“Hi,” I responded. She looked flushed and quickly turned her eyes away in a shy manner. I smiled to myself knowingly. It was always the same with all of them the first time they saw me.She looked up at me once again, this time her icy blue eyes bore into mine, searching, reaching into my very soul. Blood flow to my face as goosebumps erupted all over my flesh. I could not stand it any longer and quickly averted my gaze. Who was this witch?“Selene.” Gabriel’s voice echoed through the house. I was grateful to him for the intrusion as she quickly turned her gaze to him. She stared at him coldly, in the same way she had looked at my mother.“What do you want?” she growled at him. Gabri
Selene's povMy senses returned with a bang. What the hell was I doing here? My lips were interlocked in a passionate embrace with the guy who was supposed to be my new family. I withdrew my lips from him, and to my uttermost disgust, I felt myself hesitate. “Stop,” I muttered. He withdrew away away hesitantly too and stared at me with those golden eyes. I turned away as the blood flew up to my face and I blushed madly. This guy was going to think I'm some naive countryside girl.“My goodness.” He exclaimed, “I'm so sorry.” He looked as if he was drowning in his shame. Both of us were entitled to this shame. Had he no manners? To force himself on me was unacceptable. “But he didn't force himself on you. You allowed him.” A cool voice within me. The voice had been so loud I turned around to see if there were any other people inside the room.“It's ok,” I muttered while wriggling my fingers together. What would Alex think of Magnus? Yes, he was hot and her type but what would she th
Selene's pov “Hello, My flower.” The all too familiar voice said. I sat up from my bed and turned to look at the face I thought I had lost forever.“Mom?” I asked, fearing that it was not her, fearing I was imagining it all.“Yes dear, it's me. Get up, you'll be late for work.” She said and opened the door to my room. She walked inside and stood next to me. My mother was walking!! I stared at her with open eyes. Wait I was back in my room, I was back home. Confusion began to set in quickly. Why was I back here? And how was she whole and hearty? My mother had been I'll…my mother was…“Are you alright, flower?” she asked. She bent down and felt my forehead. “You don't have a fever.” “Mom,” I muttered in awe. She continued her work around me. “ Yes, darling?” She replied.I could feel something tugging at the back of my mind. I could feel someone trying to reach me. “Get up Seli, before your breakfast grows cold.” I lay on the bed and continued gaping at her.“Get up young lady.” My m
Magnus’s pov.All my life I have known pain. You are not considered to be an alpha if you are a weakling. The Lycan gene is poison to those who cannot wield its power, it corrupts you, weakens you more because you need strength to fight, and if you have no strength for the fight you are beaten. Pain has been my friend for a long time for I am an ancient, I am feral, I am one with nature. The pain that seared through my entire body was not something I was familiar with though. Tears threatened to escape my eyes as Selene pressed down on the wound with a piece of her cloth and a mixture of herbs.“Hmmm.” I groaned. The tears were now close, I bit down hard on my lips to stop myself from screaming.“Please, stay still.” Selene pleaded. Her icy blue eyes were filled with fear and concern. She wrapped the cloth around the wound in a bid to stop the bleeding. I watched her hands as she walked quickly but her face soon called to me and the memory of the moment we had shared. No, now was not
