Chapter 4

Author: A.Nostos
While I was quietly finalizing my travel plans, a new baby in the family was about to be christened at the church.

Matteo's mother, Victoria Rinaldi, had personally sent word that I was expected to attend the ceremony before becoming the Donna.

My migraine had eased, though I still had no appetite. I changed into a formal dress anyway and went to the church.

When I arrived, Bianca was at the entrance checking the guest list, looking perfectly fine as she smiled and greeted each guest.

The moment she saw me, she had a waiter clear away the flowers near my seat.

"Elena can't handle strong floral scents. Swap these out for some unscented greenery."

The waiter took care of it right away and set out lush green ivy instead.

The seating had been arranged in advance, but once again, Matteo had forgotten what made me sick.

I felt nothing at all. I just nodded to Bianca in thanks.

She winked at me and leaned in to whisper. "Don't be mad at the Don. He's always been clueless when it comes to romance. When he gets here, just tell him you've missed him these past few days and ask him to stop by your bedroom tonight. Say you want to talk."

I nodded, but I had no intention of doing it.

It had always been like this. I'd followed Bianca's advice, and little by little, Matteo and I had grown closer.

Looking back, I realized Matteo had liked Bianca's personality all along. I'd just been wearing it as a disguise.

It wasn't the real me.

Matteo came out of the church in a sharply tailored black suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and narrow waist.

A few family members who'd been chatting broke off when they saw him and greeted him respectfully.

But his eyes went to Bianca first.

"The doctor told you to rest. What are you doing here?"

"We have family elders here today. I was worried no one else would get it right."

Bianca waved the list in her hand, then pointed at my seat.

"Don't worry, just leave everything to me. I even took care of the flowers at Elena's seat for you."

That was when Matteo finally looked my way. Or rather, at the greenery on my table.

"You're always so thoughtful."

After a few more words to Bianca, he beckoned me over. "Elena, come with me. We need to make the rounds and toast the elders."

Matteo signaled a waiter to hand me a glass of champagne, as if he'd completely forgotten I'd been in the hospital three days earlier.

I thought I felt a dull cramp starting in my stomach. I took the glass without a fuss.

I wasn't about to make myself sick. I stayed by Matteo's side, smiling, raising my glass, and pretending to drink.

But Matteo noticed. His eyes dropped to my untouched glass, his tone turning stern. "Elena, you need to drink. It's disrespectful not to."

I smiled at him, poured my champagne into his glass, and had a waiter bring me a glass of orange juice instead.

"Matteo, you're an attentive man. You make it painfully obvious who you care about and who you don't."

He caught the sarcasm, and his voice took on a dangerous edge. "Elena, this isn't the place for one of your tantrums. Is this about the champagne, or the flowers?"

"Don," I said casually, "I told you a long time ago that I can't handle strong floral scents. That's why you always brought me daisies when you came to see me. They hardly have any scent."

He frowned, then seemed to remember. "Oh, the daisies. That was Bianca's idea too. She said they were a symbol of true love."

The moment the words left his mouth, Matteo seemed to realize his mistake. He fell silent and swallowed hard.

"Elena, you know I've never paid much attention to that kind of thing."

I kept my polite smile in place, but I couldn't hold back a bitter laugh. "So you've never paid much attention to anything about me. Is that what you mean?"

One of the older family members, oblivious to the tension between us, approached with his arms outstretched, cutting Matteo off before he could respond.

Maybe he didn't know how to answer without looking bad anyway.

I stepped aside, one name stuck in my mind: Bianca. She had brought us together. Now she stood between us.

Even the orange juice tasted bitter now.

Without thinking, I clutched at my clothes."How did you find me?"Matteo pulled something up on his phone and set it down in front of me."With your name online like that, you weren't exactly hard to find."On the screen was the staff list from the bookstore's catalog."I want to talk to you."His eyes were dark and serious. We sat at one of the tables in the store, and he slid a large envelope across to me.I opened it. Inside was his signed account of what had happened, with every detail spelled out. He'd already shared it with the whole family."Elena, I told the whole family what really happened back then... I also told them the engagement is over. No one is going to bother you again."I didn't say anything. I put the papers back in the envelope, planning to take them home and show Uncle Enzo.At last, the truth about my father was no longer a secret."Thank you for bringing me this."Something shifted in Matteo's eyes, and he leaned forward without seeming to realize it."Elena,

Before we left Boston, Uncle Enzo and I carefully took the photo down from the wall. He'd lived there for years, but he didn't have much to pack. Everything fit into two old leather suitcases."Are you really moving with me, Uncle Enzo?" I hated the thought of putting him through all that trouble.Uncle Enzo tucked the photo into a suitcase and smiled. "It's about time I moved anyway. I'll find a place on a lower floor, so I don't have to climb all these stairs every day."Uncle Enzo had always looked out for me, even when I was a kid. My eyes burned with tears, and I didn't try to talk him out of it again. We moved to Providence together and used the money we'd saved over the years to rent a two-story apartment with a terrace.Enzo took the downstairs, and I took the upstairs. With south-facing windows and an open view, the whole place was filled with sunlight. The first few days after we moved in, I kept listening for cars pulling up outside the window.I'd clutch the curtain until I

ElenaEarly that evening, there was a knock at the apartment door.Matteo stood outside in his black coat, still carrying the chill from outdoors. His tall frame nearly blocked the hallway light. When he saw me, his face lit up for a split second. "Elena, you're all right. I'm so glad—""Come in," I said flatly, cutting him off.The apartment was tiny. Matteo signaled for his guards to wait by the door. They crowded the already narrow hallway.Uncle Enzo greeted him awkwardly, helped him out of his coat, and hung it on the back of the door.Matteo carried himself with a Don's authority, as always. Uncle Enzo instinctively hung back, too intimidated to sit down.I pulled out a chair, helped Uncle Enzo into it, and glared at Matteo. "Some people sure like to throw their weight around. This isn't your estate, and Uncle Enzo isn't your servant."Matteo paused as he reached for the back of the chair. Uncharacteristically, he avoided my gaze and quietly thanked Uncle Enzo.I sat down across

MatteoAfter the call ended, Elena texted Matteo an address in Boston. At least it wasn't far.Matteo waved Dario over. "Get the car. We're going to Boston, as fast as we can."A cup of coffee sat on the desk, long since gone cold. He picked it up and drained it in one go.He hadn't slept all night. He rubbed his brow, still shaken by what had happened. His stomach had dropped when they found the broken bracelet on the tracks. He hadn't even dared to ask whether there was any blood nearby. Now that he knew Elena was safe, he should have been able to breathe again. But he couldn't relax. All he could think about was everything that had happened over the past few weeks.Had he really treated her that badly? Badly enough to make her walk away from the family and everything that came with it?Just then, the door opened.Victoria walked in, followed by Bianca, whose eyes were red and swollen."Have you found Elena?" Victoria sat down beside Matteo."She's in Boston. I'm going to see her soo

Call after call lit up the screen. Uncle Enzo hesitated, then asked, "Is it the Don?"I nodded, looking down at the caller ID."Elena... sweetheart, I know this is a lot to take in. But if you really want answers, you should ask the Don himself."Uncle Enzo chose his words carefully, trying to be gentle."Uncle Enzo, I know... I just can't accept it yet. The person I've trusted most these past few years actually had something to do with my father's death."Matteo didn't love me. I knew that. But he knew the truth I'd been searching for all these years. Why didn't he tell me?I took a deep breath and answered.Matteo spoke at once, his voice anxious. "Elena? Thank God you're okay. I couldn't find you anywhere. Do you have any idea how worried I was? Where are you? I'll send someone to pick you up.""Looking for me? Why would you look for me?" I said flatly. "Isn't Bianca the one you really care about?"He was quiet for a few seconds, as if he hadn't expected me to say that. When he spok

As the train pulled out of New York, Matteo called.I let the phone ring until the screen went dark, leaving only my calm reflection behind.I didn't answer.A few minutes later, Matteo texted me. "Elena, enough. Stop acting out. You're making the family look bad."I don't care where you are. Come back. Bianca's been crying and blaming herself, and she's still defending you after the way you behaved. You've gone too far, Elena. You've brought shame on this family!"I didn't reply. I just turned my phone face down. The scenery rushed past outside the window. Whatever drama was going on back in New York, I didn't care anymore.Whoever he favored, however much he ignored me, none of it mattered now.The train pulled in at the first gray light of dawn. Uncle Enzo was waiting for me on the platform. He was a lot thinner than I remembered, and his hair had gone almost completely white. But when he reached for my suitcase, he smiled at me as warmly as he always had. "Elena, why did you travel
