Chapter 3

作者: Fairy
After I hung up, I started packing.

There wasn't much to pack. Alice had already taken almost everything I owned in this house.

The only thing I wanted to take was the smiling porcelain doll my mother had painted by hand for me before she died.

I opened the safe in my room, but the doll was gone.

My first thought was Alice. No one else in this house would take my things.

I hurried to her room. Through the gap in the door, I saw my father and brothers gathered around her bed while the family doctor changed the bandage on her arm.

She was holding my mother's porcelain doll.

My breath caught. I shoved the door open, strode in, and said sharply, "Give that back. It's mine."

When Alice saw me, she pretended to be scared and shrank back against my brothers, still clutching the doll.

"Nina, what are you trying to pull now?!" Enzo stepped between us and glared at me. "Alice just wanted something to comfort her. You won't even let her hold it?"

"That's what my mother left me." My voice shook. "Who said you could give it to her?"

"I gave it to her." My father walked over, his face cold. "The doctor said she needed something to calm her down. She liked that doll, so I sent someone to get it."

My eyes burned, and something in me snapped. "That's the only thing my mother left me. You promised me nobody would ever touch it! It's mine!"

"Nina, please don't be mad..." Alice gave me a deliberately wounded look. "I'll give it back right now..."

I reached for it, but Alice deliberately stumbled, and the smiling doll tumbled from her arms and hit the floor hard.

With a sharp crack, the doll shattered. The smiling face my mother had painted broke into pieces, the cracks making it look as though it were crying.

A deafening roar filled my head, and I froze.

"I'm sorry, Nina! I didn't mean to!" Alice said timidly, her eyes filling with tears.

"Don't cry. You didn't do it on purpose!" Luca pulled her protectively into his arms, then turned to me.

"Nina, Alice didn't mean it. Try to understand and stop making a scene."

I didn't answer. Shaking, I knelt on the floor and picked up the pieces. Even when the shards cut my hands and left them covered in blood, I didn't stop.

Regret and pity flickered across my father's face. Enzo's lips parted, and he seemed about to step forward and help me up.

Alice noticed the concern they couldn't hide, and jealousy flashed in her eyes.

The next moment, she covered her face and started wailing.

"Nina, I'm sorry. It's all my fault... I'll get you another doll. Just please don't hit me again like you did last time, okay?"

At that, my father and brothers went rigid.

Before they could ask anything, a maid assigned to Alice stepped forward to back her up. "Don Moreland! Ms. Moreland picks on Ms. Rossi whenever you're away. When I tried to help, she threatened to throw me out."

Enzo slowly withdrew the hand he'd been reaching toward me.

"Nina..." Every trace of pity vanished from my father's eyes. Deep disappointment and fury took its place. "How did I end up with a daughter as vicious as you?"

I didn't have the strength left to argue. I just laughed bitterly. "So you'd rather believe her lies than believe me?"

Enzo roared at me, his eyes bloodshot. "We want to believe you, but the evidence is right in front of us. How are we supposed to believe you?!"

Luca's expression was just as cold. "Nina, you've really let us down."

I gave a cold laugh. So a maid's word was all the proof they needed. I shook my head. I didn't want to say another word.

Nobody would believe me anyway.

When I didn't react, Enzo reached out to help me up. But when he saw the numbness in my eyes, he froze.

"Nina..."

Just then, Alice spoke softly. "Luca, I think my arm's starting to hurt again..."

Their attention immediately shifted to her. They crowded protectively around Alice and hurried her out the door.

Not one of them looked back at me as I knelt on the floor with my hands covered in blood.

The moment they left the estate, a plain black sedan pulled up at the side gate.

I got up, wrapped the bloodstained shards, put them in my suitcase, and calmly walked out.

Professor Davis's assistant opened the back door for me. Just as I got in, a message from Luca appeared in the family group chat.

"Enough. When we get back, you're going to apologize to Alice."

I let out a short, humorless laugh and didn't reply. I just rolled down the window and threw my phone out.

The tires crushed it, severing the last thread that tied me to the Moreland family.

From that moment on, Nina Moreland no longer existed in that house.

And they would never find me.

After saying that, I turned to leave. But Enzo gripped my wrist and refused to let go.His eyes were red, and his tears fell onto the back of my hand. "Nina, I know how wrong I was. Please forgive me..."Before I could pull away, Luca grabbed my other hand. "Nina, I promise nobody will ever take your things again. Whatever you want, I'll give it to you. Please give me a chance to make it up to you."Then my father stepped into my path, his eyes red.The once-imposing head of the family now spoke in a trembling voice. "Nina, I'm so sorry... Come home with us. I promise no one will ever hurt you again. Your brothers and I won't either..."The three grown men closed in around me and trapped me.I struggled to break free, but they held firm. The suffocating pressure made me feel sick.Just then, a familiar, anxious voice called out behind me. "Nina!"I turned and saw Professor Davis running toward us with my entire research team behind him.Professor Davis rushed over, pulled me away from

After the national awards ceremony, my father and brothers followed every possible lead. They leaned on every contact, pulled every string, and called in every favor until they finally found me outside the research facility. When I walked out the gate, I almost didn't recognize them. All three had hollow eyes and unkempt stubble. Each looked close to collapse. The moment they saw me, their eyes brightened with desperate hope, and they rushed toward me. "Nina! Nina, let us explain!"My father's voice trembled. "Your brothers and I were fooled! That underboss was a mole sent by a rival family! He saved us so his daughter, Alice, could enter the Moreland family and steal the company's trade secrets from the inside!"Luca reached for my sleeve with a shaking hand, his voice breaking as he begged. "Nina, can you ever forgive us?"We were blind. That's why we treated her so well. Alice is in prison now. Won't you come back?"Enzo looked at me. "Nina, I put your name back on my car. No one el

Alice looked at the three grief-stricken men, pushed herself to her feet, and sneered, "You don't get to blame me. I wasn't the one who drove Nina away. I didn't force you to steal her patent or push her to the brink."She laughed wildly, venom in her eyes. "You're the ones who stabbed Nina in the heart over and over! Don't stand there and act as if your remorse makes you noble! It's disgusting!""Shut up! Get out!" Luca roared, his eyes red. He grabbed her by the collar and threw her out the door.My father immediately canceled every bank card he had given Alice and took back the jewelry, luxury cars, and privileges he had showered on her.Accustomed to a life of luxury, Alice suddenly had nothing and ended up on the street. Furious, she started a livestream. On camera, she tearfully accused the Moreland family of being ungrateful and cruelly abusing the daughter of the man who had saved their lives.Just as her livestream was going viral, the Moreland family launched a worldwide live

In the months after I left, my father and brothers searched for me frantically. But they never found a single lead. From the day I left, a suffocating silence hung over the Moreland estate.Alice, accustomed to being the center of everyone's world, couldn't stand being ignored. One afternoon, she deliberately fell on the stairs and cried out, "It hurts so much. Dad, Luca, Enzo, I twisted my ankle..."As always, she expected the three men to drop everything and rush over to pick her up.But this time, my father stayed on the sofa, wearily rubbing his forehead. "Get the first-aid kit and take care of her," he told the butler. There wasn't a trace of sympathy in Luca's eyes, only irritation. "Alice, you're a grown woman. Can't you even watch where you're going?"Enzo didn't even look at her. He was staring at the missing-person post on his phone, his eyes bloodshot.Alice started to panic. She gritted her teeth and forced hurt into her voice as she cried, "I'm sorry. It's all because of m

After I left the Moreland family, I joined Professor Davis at a top-secret federal research facility cut off from the outside world. There were no endless fights for attention or calculated cruelty. My world was nothing but data and analysis.I poured everything I had into upgrading my core algorithm. I worked in the lab day and night, often forgetting to eat.One night, I was staring at lines of code scrolling across my screen when Claire Bennett, a senior researcher on the team, came over, saved my work, and turned off my monitor."Go eat. Keep this up, and your body will give out before the project is done."She sat me down in the break room, opened the takeout container, and used her chopsticks to carefully pick out all the dried shrimp, tossing them in the trash."I saw your medical report. You have a severe seafood allergy." Claire pushed the container toward me and said gently, "I told the cook not to add dried shrimp, but they did anyway. I've picked it all out now. Go ahead an

By the time my father and brothers brought Alice back to the estate, I had been gone for a long time. When Luca saw that I hadn't replied to his message, he frowned and called me, but I didn't answer. He tugged at his tie in annoyance. "She ignores messages and won't answer calls. Nina's temper just keeps getting worse."Enzo set a takeout box on the dining table and grumbled, "I even went out of my way to get her favorite dessert so she'd give Alice a proper apology. And she's throwing a tantrum!"Alice tugged at the hem of her shirt, looking hurt. "Ever since I came, Nina's been angry all the time. Enzo, maybe I should apologize to her instead...""No," Enzo said without thinking. "Nina's just been a little difficult lately. She used to be... such a sweet girl."My father called for the butler. "Go upstairs and get Nina."The butler hesitated. "Sir, I believe Ms. Moreland has gone out."They all froze.Alice said timidly, "Maybe Nina went out just to avoid apologizing to me?"Luca fr
