Chapter 1

I stared at Lena and Garrett standing side by side, unable to believe it. I wanted to say something, but I couldn’t get a single word out.

Lena looked at me guiltily, tears running down her cheeks.

I clenched my fists. The sting in my palms helped me find my voice.

“Why?”

Lena opened her mouth to explain.

But Garrett stepped forward, gripped her hand, and spoke first. “When I was on border patrol, another pack attacked me. I was badly hurt and accidentally ate some heartsnare. It messed with my mind. Lena got there just in time and saved me...”

He didn’t have to finish. I could guess the rest.

My mate, the man I loved more than anyone, had slept with my best friend.

I stared at their clasped hands. My heart clenched, and my wolf howled in pain.

“They betrayed you! They betrayed you!”

I struggled to keep my furious wolf under control, but a familiar pain spread through my body.

I’d felt the same way when I’d suddenly gotten sick a month earlier.

Fever. Vomiting. Dizziness.

Back then, Garrett was away at the border. I didn’t want him to worry, so I kept it to myself.

But now I finally understood. I hadn’t just gotten sick out of nowhere. I’d been feeling the effects of Garrett’s betrayal!

Suddenly everything went black, and I pitched forward.

Lena reached out and caught me right away.

She held me anxiously, then took out an herb.

“Elise, you’re in so much pain, aren’t you? I’m sorry. This is all my fault.

“I picked this moonvein at the border just for you. Eat it, quick. It’ll ease the pain.”

I stared at the moonvein in Lena’s hand. It only grew on the cliffs at the border, and it was used to stabilize mate bonds.

Because it was so hard to gather, it was incredibly valuable.

Lena must have gone through a lot to get it.

But I fought through the pain and pushed her away.

“I don’t want it!”

After all, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have had to go through this pain in the first place.

With that, I went home on my own.

But when I pushed the door open, our slippers were the first thing I saw. All three pairs.

Lena’s favorite red pair sat between mine and Garrett’s, one pair black and the other white.

It stung to look at.

I couldn’t stop imagining what might have happened at night.

Maybe they’d been just like those slippers, nestled close together behind my back.

Just thinking about it made my stomach churn. I felt like I was going to throw up.

I clapped a hand over my mouth without thinking and felt something cold.

When I held out my hand, I saw the moonstone ring I’d never wanted to take off.

My heart clenched, and suddenly I was close to tears.

A month earlier, Lena had suddenly gotten word that Alpha Rowan was sending her to reinforce the border.

Before she left, she held my hand and looked at the worn bone ring on my finger.

“Your ring’s all worn out. I heard there’s really pretty moonstone at the border. I’ll make one for you and one for Garrett.”

A week earlier, I’d gotten the gift and put it on right away.

And I’d secretly hoped my mate and my best friend would come home soon.

But now I wondered who this ring had really been made for. Was it a heartfelt gift or a token of guilt?

I didn’t want to think about it.

I pulled the ring off and clutched it in my fist, ready to throw it in the trash.

But suddenly, I heard Lena crying behind me.

Garrett stepped forward and grabbed my wrist.

“Elise, I’m the one to blame, not Lena. Don’t reject her kindness.”

He turned to Lena, his voice softer. “Go wait for me outside.”

Lena hesitated, then nodded and went out.

Once Lena was gone, Garrett gave me a tender, apologetic look. His voice was hoarse, as if he was trying to hide his own pain. “I’ve hurt you. I’ll talk to the Alpha and make sure you get the chief healer position.”

I let out a humorless laugh.

My wolf was just as furious.

“His older brother is the Alpha. This jerk wants to use his influence to get rid of you!”

When I didn’t say anything, Garrett tried again. “And this house, if you want it, you can...”

“Enough!”

I cut him off coldly. “Garrett, what do you think I am? Some gold-digging she-wolf you can buy off with a few handouts?”

Garrett frowned.

“Of course not. It’s just...”

He was quiet for a long time before he spoke again.

“Elise, you don’t have to do this. We’re mates. There’s nothing wrong with accepting what I can give you.

“Why can’t you lean on me a little more, the way Lena does?”

“Three days.”

I cut him off.

“In three days, I’m breaking our mate bond.

“Lena’s always depended on someone else. First it was me, then her mate, and now you.

“I’m not like her. I don’t need someone else to give me everything. I can get what I want on my own.”

Garrett looked at me. His expression was conflicted, but he seemed to have made up his mind.

“I’m not breaking our mate bond.

“Take some time to calm down.”

Then he pushed open the door and left.

Only when his footsteps had faded completely did I curl up in pain.

It felt as though someone was squeezing my heart. The pain was unbearable.

Three days later, the worst cold snap of the season hit the snowfields.I stood at the edge of camp with my fists clenched at my sides, staring anxiously in the direction the patrol had gone.Soon, I heard hurried footsteps outside the camp.Lena ran toward me, covered in snow, her voice thick with tears. “Elise, Garrett got separated from the team. He’s... missing!”I immediately shouldered my medical kit, ready to go.Lena suddenly grabbed my hand.“I’m coming with you.”I pushed her hand away.“You’re safer here. I know the snowfields well. I won’t get lost.”Lena burst into tears.“I’m sorry, Elise. What Garrett and I did to you was wrong.”I didn’t answer. I just walked out of camp.I searched the snowfields for a long time. Just when I thought I was about to freeze solid, I found Garrett in a hollow in the snow near the edge of a cliff. His face was purple with cold.I hurried over, rubbed my hands together as vigorously as I could, and pressed them to his face.“Garrett, wake up

In them, I made her look at my horrible wounds and told her it was all her fault. After she and Garrett got together, her anxiety and guilt over betraying me were worse than ever. She was afraid to be apart from him. Being with him was the only way she could catch her breath, even for a moment. She’d clung to him like a lifeline, so tightly that she’d almost gotten him killed. She pulled me into a hug, her tears soaking my clothes.“Elise, I know you’ll never forgive me. Garrett pushed himself up and shook his head at me, his voice trembling with regret. “You haven’t been fine!”His eyes were red as he pointed at my cheeks, chapped raw by the snowfield winds.“You always cared so much about your looks. If you’d been fine, you never would’ve let your face get like this.“And your hands. When you were treating my wound just now, I could feel how ice-cold they were.“Your hands were always warm. The wolfsbane must have done lasting damage. Is that what’s causing all this?”He was right. Garrett was right about all of it.I’d survived, but the effects of the two poisons reacting in my body had never gone away. Neither had the backlash from breaking the mate bond.Every full moon, the pain tore me apart. But it was nothing compared to how it felt when I found out Garrett and Lena had betrayed me.When I didn’t say anything, Garrett went pale.He struggled to sit up.“I regret it. Three years later, I got a message from the pack’s Alpha.“Elise, the pack hasn’t had a chief healer for a long time. I’d really like you to take the job.”I stared at Rowan’s message, slowly tracing the timestamp with my fingertip.Three years. I’d survived three whole years out on these endless snowfields. Those three years had been brutal. To survive, I’d had to push myself to get stronger, then stronger still.I touched the spot where the silver dagger had pierced my stomach. The wound had healed, leaving a scar, and it didn’t hurt anymore. But the scar left by that silver blade would never disappear.Still, I could face it calmly now.I could face Garrett and Lena with the same calm.I returned to the pack unannounced. I checked in with Rowan, changed, and went straight to the infirmary. But I never expected my first patient to be Garrett. He was badly hurt. Something sharp had sliced a long, deep gash across his stomach. Bright red blood poured from the wound, soaking his pants a

The potion slid down my throat and burned through my whole body.Something tore violently at my flesh and my soul.My wolf thrashed inside me in agony, letting out a desperate, savage howl.“Elise, I don’t want to die. Save me! Please!”I doubled over in pain as each vertebra pushed against my skin. Claws burst from my fingertips, staining the silver fur on the backs of my hands with blood.I lost control and collapsed to the floor. I pressed my forehead against the ground and dug my claws into it. A snarl tore from my throat, and I coughed up a mouthful of blood.Garrett’s mark suddenly burned like fire. A second later, the burning stopped. The unbearable sensation of being torn apart slowly faded.I lay on the floor, drained, gasping for air.I struggled to lift my hand, then laid it over Garrett’s mark. Tears poured down my face. The mate bond between Garrett and me was broken. We were nothing to each other anymore. At that same moment, Garrett’s heart seized. He suddenly dropped to

When it was time to break the mate bond, Garrett didn’t show up.I searched all over the pack grounds and finally found him on the hill out back.I demanded coldly, “Why didn’t you show up?”Garrett looked at me, his lips pressed together and his expression apologetic. It was a long time before he spoke.“Elise, we’re fated mates. If we break the bond, Lena’s going to have a really hard time in the pack.“And people will curse my name and laugh at me.”He took a step toward me.“Elise, I’m begging you. Whatever you want from now on, I’ll...”Keep things the way they are?So I’m supposed to suffer through all of this just to spare him the ridicule and make life easier for Lena in the pack?I cut him off, furious. “Why should I? What gives you the right to do this to me?”Garrett’s lips moved. His brow furrowed, as though he were struggling to hide his anguish.“Elise...”I didn’t want to hear his excuses.
