Chapter 2

Author: Isabella ross
I woke up with a start in the middle of the night and reached for the other side of the bed out of habit. It was cold.

Then I remembered. Garrett and Lena had already moved out.

A broken sob escaped me. It felt like a piece of my heart had been torn out.

It hurt so badly.

After a long time, I picked up my phone and saw that Lena had texted me three hours earlier.

“You know your stomach acts up when you skip dinner. I left some grilled meat outside your door. Eat something if you’re still awake.”

My hand stilled briefly on the phone.

Back then, whenever I got home too late for dinner, Lena would sneak me out to a hill behind the pack grounds and grill some meat for me.

Her grilled meat was the best. Medium rare, just how I loved it.

My stomach growled.

I got up and opened the door. Sure enough, there was a box of grilled meat on the step.

I leaned wearily against the door and let myself slide slowly to the ground.

I opened the box and put a piece of meat in my mouth.

A bitter taste spread through my mouth.

I’d never known cold grilled meat could be so hard to swallow.

The next day, I went to the infirmary to sort herbs as usual.

But I ran right into Garrett and Lena.

They were cuddled up together like nobody else was around.

The werewolves around us whispered about whether Garrett and I were breaking our mate bond because of Lena.

Lena’s eyes were red, and she opened her mouth like she wanted to explain.

But Garrett let his dominance flare, scaring off the gossiping wolves.

Then he gave me a conflicted look.

“Elise, you’ve been through so much pain because of me. I’ll ask the Alpha to give you a few more days off.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t need that.”

Garrett was the Alpha’s younger brother and the pack’s Beta, second only to the Alpha.

When my wolf awakened at 18, the Moon Goddess revealed that Garrett was my fated mate.

We fell in love soon after we met, then marked each other and sealed the bond.

I thought we’d go on loving each other like that forever. I never imagined...

After Lena broke her mate bond, I spent a long time helping her through it. I wanted her to have a job in the pack like I did, but she didn’t seem to know how to do anything.

To keep her from moping, I had Garrett find her a spot on the patrol team. It was the first favor I’d ever asked him for.

I never dreamed it would give them the chance to betray me.

I was about to leave when Lena softly called my name and held out the moonvein she’d been clutching.

“Elise, you have to keep taking it if you want the pain to ease.

“Don’t worry, I picked a lot. As long as you need it, I’ll keep getting more for you.”

Moonvein was incredibly difficult to gather, yet she made it sound so easy.

I clenched my fists at my sides and thought back to our childhood. Lena hadn’t known much back then, but she’d risk anything for me.

Lena and I had both lost our parents in battle when we were very young.

Before my wolf awakened, I was weak and sickly, and we had no money for medicine.

Lena would risk her life going up the mountain to pick herbs for me. Several times, she pulled me back from the brink of death.

When she moved in with her mate, she teared up and made Garrett promise to look after me. “The herbs from the mountain work best when she’s sick. Pick some extra and keep them on hand. You’d better take good care of Elise while I’m gone.”

Garrett held my hand tight and said solemnly, “I promise I’ll take good care of her.”

And now the two people who’d promised to protect me were the ones who’d hurt me the most.

I looked at the two of them standing side by side and laughed bitterly at myself. Then I turned and walked into the infirmary.

I didn’t need either of them anymore.

Three days later, the worst cold snap of the season hit the snowfields.I stood at the edge of camp with my fists clenched at my sides, staring anxiously in the direction the patrol had gone.Soon, I heard hurried footsteps outside the camp.Lena ran toward me, covered in snow, her voice thick with tears. “Elise, Garrett got separated from the team. He’s... missing!”I immediately shouldered my medical kit, ready to go.Lena suddenly grabbed my hand.“I’m coming with you.”I pushed her hand away.“You’re safer here. I know the snowfields well. I won’t get lost.”Lena burst into tears.“I’m sorry, Elise. What Garrett and I did to you was wrong.”I didn’t answer. I just walked out of camp.I searched the snowfields for a long time. Just when I thought I was about to freeze solid, I found Garrett in a hollow in the snow near the edge of a cliff. His face was purple with cold.I hurried over, rubbed my hands together as vigorously as I could, and pressed them to his face.“Garrett, wake up

She rushed over and gripped my wrists tightly. She looked me up and down nervously.“It really is you!“Elise, you’re alive!”Before I could say anything, Lena broke down sobbing. She said the past three years had been really hard for her. She’d believed I was dead, and the guilt had eaten away at her.She had nightmares every night. In them, I made her look at my horrible wounds and told her it was all her fault. After she and Garrett got together, her anxiety and guilt over betraying me were worse than ever. She was afraid to be apart from him. Being with him was the only way she could catch her breath, even for a moment. She’d clung to him like a lifeline, so tightly that she’d almost gotten him killed. She pulled me into a hug, her tears soaking my clothes.“Elise, I know you’ll never forgive me. But I still want you to know that you’re my best friend. That will never change.”I gently pushed Lena away.Looking at her tear-streaked face, I suddenly remembered how wolves from anothe

Garrett pushed himself up and shook his head at me, his voice trembling with regret. “You haven’t been fine!”His eyes were red as he pointed at my cheeks, chapped raw by the snowfield winds.“You always cared so much about your looks. If you’d been fine, you never would’ve let your face get like this.“And your hands. When you were treating my wound just now, I could feel how ice-cold they were.“Your hands were always warm. The wolfsbane must have done lasting damage. Is that what’s causing all this?”He was right. Garrett was right about all of it.I’d survived, but the effects of the two poisons reacting in my body had never gone away. Neither had the backlash from breaking the mate bond.Every full moon, the pain tore me apart. But it was nothing compared to how it felt when I found out Garrett and Lena had betrayed me.When I didn’t say anything, Garrett went pale.He struggled to sit up.“I regret it. Three years later, I got a message from the pack’s Alpha.“Elise, the pack hasn’t had a chief healer for a long time. I’d really like you to take the job.”I stared at Rowan’s message, slowly tracing the timestamp with my fingertip.Three years. I’d survived three whole years out on these endless snowfields. Those three years had been brutal. To survive, I’d had to push myself to get stronger, then stronger still.I touched the spot where the silver dagger had pierced my stomach. The wound had healed, leaving a scar, and it didn’t hurt anymore. But the scar left by that silver blade would never disappear.Still, I could face it calmly now.I could face Garrett and Lena with the same calm.I returned to the pack unannounced. I checked in with Rowan, changed, and went straight to the infirmary. But I never expected my first patient to be Garrett. He was badly hurt. Something sharp had sliced a long, deep gash across his stomach. Bright red blood poured from the wound, soaking his pants a

The potion slid down my throat and burned through my whole body.Something tore violently at my flesh and my soul.My wolf thrashed inside me in agony, letting out a desperate, savage howl.“Elise, I don’t want to die. Save me! Please!”I doubled over in pain as each vertebra pushed against my skin. Claws burst from my fingertips, staining the silver fur on the backs of my hands with blood.I lost control and collapsed to the floor. I pressed my forehead against the ground and dug my claws into it. A snarl tore from my throat, and I coughed up a mouthful of blood.Garrett’s mark suddenly burned like fire. A second later, the burning stopped. The unbearable sensation of being torn apart slowly faded.I lay on the floor, drained, gasping for air.I struggled to lift my hand, then laid it over Garrett’s mark. Tears poured down my face. The mate bond between Garrett and me was broken. We were nothing to each other anymore. At that same moment, Garrett’s heart seized. He suddenly dropped to

When it was time to break the mate bond, Garrett didn’t show up.I searched all over the pack grounds and finally found him on the hill out back.I demanded coldly, “Why didn’t you show up?”Garrett looked at me, his lips pressed together and his expression apologetic. It was a long time before he spoke.“Elise, we’re fated mates. If we break the bond, Lena’s going to have a really hard time in the pack.“And people will curse my name and laugh at me.”He took a step toward me.“Elise, I’m begging you. Let’s just keep things the way they are. Whatever you want from now on, I’ll...”Keep things the way they are?So I’m supposed to suffer through all of this just to spare him the ridicule and make life easier for Lena in the pack?I cut him off, furious. “Why should I? What gives you the right to do this to me?”Garrett’s lips moved. His brow furrowed, as though he were struggling to hide his anguish.“Elise...”I didn’t want to hear his excuses. I turned and hurried away.Whether he agr
