Chapter 3

Author: Isabella ross
That afternoon, Lena got hurt because she wasn’t paying attention.

Garrett carried her into the infirmary, looking frantically for me.

He carefully laid Lena on a bed.

“Elise, hurry! Lena is in pain!”

I glanced at Lena’s wound. It wasn’t deep.

“Don’t worry. It’s just a minor wound. Once I put some medicine on it, it’ll heal fast.”

As I spoke, I took out herbs and gauze. I spread the crushed herbs over Lena’s wound, then quickly and neatly bandaged it.

“All done. Keep it dry for three days, watch what you eat, and...”

Garrett frowned and cut me off. “Elise, this is all my fault. Don’t take it out on Lena. You’re the pack’s healer. You can’t let your personal feelings interfere with your work.”

I looked up at him, stunned.

My wolf spelled it out for me.

“He thinks you deliberately gave Lena poor treatment. He suspects you! He doesn’t trust you!”

I clenched my fists at my sides.

“You don’t trust me? You think I’m letting my feelings interfere with my work?”

I already knew he’d betrayed me, but the fact that he doubted me still made me tremble with anger.

He wasn’t just questioning my character. He was questioning my integrity as a healer.

I turned away, disappointed.

“Think whatever you want.”

Garrett was at a loss for words. Before he could say anything else, Lena quickly covered his mouth with her hand.

She looked at me apologetically.

“I’m sorry, Elise. Garrett didn’t mean it like that.”

Seeing Lena defend Garrett like that stopped me in my tracks.

My voice turned icy. “Who are you to apologize on Garrett’s behalf? Are you just his mate’s friend, or are you his lover?”

Lena froze. Then she covered her mouth and ran out crying, looking hurt.

Garrett watched her go, his face full of worry. He gave me a conflicted look, then went after her without a second thought.

That evening, I stood alone on the hill behind the pack grounds, staring at the moon. It wasn’t quite full yet.

The wind blew past, lifting my hair.

Lena’s familiar scent drifted over.

I didn’t move.

She stood tentatively beside me, holding up a jacket.

“Elise, you get sick so easily...”

I pushed the jacket away.

“I haven’t been weak in a long time. Ever since my wolf awakened, I’ve been strong.”

Lena looked down, crestfallen.

“I forgot how much you’ve changed. We never kept secrets from each other in the past.

“If I hadn’t asked Garrett, I wouldn’t even have known this is where you come when you’re upset.”

That stopped me.

This was the secret spot Garrett and I shared.

The place where we’d sealed our bond.

Now she and Garrett had no secrets from each other. It had once been that way between him and me.

Lena looked up at me.

“Elise, I’m so sorry. But at the border, I couldn’t just stand there and watch Garrett die.”

Her eyes were red.

“You and Garrett don’t have to break your mate bond. The three of us could go on just like before...”

Just like before?

We could never go back to how things were!

I cut her off. “Do you... love Garrett?”

Lena froze, then slowly nodded as the tears started falling again.

“But I never wanted to come between you and Garrett.

“If that accident hadn’t happened, I would’ve been happy with the three of us living together forever...

“But I don’t regret saving Garrett. I just feel bad for hurting you.”

She just feels bad for hurting me?

I nodded slowly, swallowing my bitterness. Then I noticed Garrett standing in the shadows.

Garrett walked toward me.

“Elise, you never cared about me at all.

“Even though we’re fated mates chosen by the Moon Goddess, you always push me away. You always do everything yourself.

“But Lena’s different. I’m her whole world.”

I stared at Garrett in silence.

I’d never questioned the Moon Goddess.

But there were plenty of important things in my life besides Garrett. I could never make him my whole world.

So I would let them have each other, no matter how much it hurt.

Three days later, the worst cold snap of the season hit the snowfields.I stood at the edge of camp with my fists clenched at my sides, staring anxiously in the direction the patrol had gone.Soon, I heard hurried footsteps outside the camp.Lena ran toward me, covered in snow, her voice thick with tears. “Elise, Garrett got separated from the team. He’s... missing!”I immediately shouldered my medical kit, ready to go.Lena suddenly grabbed my hand.“I’m coming with you.”I pushed her hand away.“You’re safer here. I know the snowfields well. I won’t get lost.”Lena burst into tears.“I’m sorry, Elise. What Garrett and I did to you was wrong.”I didn’t answer. I just walked out of camp.I searched the snowfields for a long time. Just when I thought I was about to freeze solid, I found Garrett in a hollow in the snow near the edge of a cliff. His face was purple with cold.I hurried over, rubbed my hands together as vigorously as I could, and pressed them to his face.“Garrett, wake up

She rushed over and gripped my wrists tightly. She looked me up and down nervously.“It really is you!“Elise, you’re alive!”Before I could say anything, Lena broke down sobbing. She said the past three years had been really hard for her. She’d believed I was dead, and the guilt had eaten away at her.She had nightmares every night. In them, I made her look at my horrible wounds and told her it was all her fault. After she and Garrett got together, her anxiety and guilt over betraying me were worse than ever. She was afraid to be apart from him. Being with him was the only way she could catch her breath, even for a moment. She’d clung to him like a lifeline, so tightly that she’d almost gotten him killed. She pulled me into a hug, her tears soaking my clothes.“Elise, I know you’ll never forgive me. But I still want you to know that you’re my best friend. That will never change.”I gently pushed Lena away.Looking at her tear-streaked face, I suddenly remembered how wolves from anothe

Garrett pushed himself up and shook his head at me, his voice trembling with regret. “You haven’t been fine!”His eyes were red as he pointed at my cheeks, chapped raw by the snowfield winds.“You always cared so much about your looks. If you’d been fine, you never would’ve let your face get like this.“And your hands. When you were treating my wound just now, I could feel how ice-cold they were.“Your hands were always warm. The wolfsbane must have done lasting damage. Is that what’s causing all this?”He was right. Garrett was right about all of it.I’d survived, but the effects of the two poisons reacting in my body had never gone away. Neither had the backlash from breaking the mate bond.Every full moon, the pain tore me apart. But it was nothing compared to how it felt when I found out Garrett and Lena had betrayed me.When I didn’t say anything, Garrett went pale.He struggled to sit up.“I regret it. Three years later, I got a message from the pack’s Alpha.“Elise, the pack hasn’t had a chief healer for a long time. I’d really like you to take the job.”I stared at Rowan’s message, slowly tracing the timestamp with my fingertip.Three years. I’d survived three whole years out on these endless snowfields. Those three years had been brutal. To survive, I’d had to push myself to get stronger, then stronger still.I touched the spot where the silver dagger had pierced my stomach. The wound had healed, leaving a scar, and it didn’t hurt anymore. But the scar left by that silver blade would never disappear.Still, I could face it calmly now.I could face Garrett and Lena with the same calm.I returned to the pack unannounced. I checked in with Rowan, changed, and went straight to the infirmary. But I never expected my first patient to be Garrett. He was badly hurt. Something sharp had sliced a long, deep gash across his stomach. Bright red blood poured from the wound, soaking his pants a

The potion slid down my throat and burned through my whole body.Something tore violently at my flesh and my soul.My wolf thrashed inside me in agony, letting out a desperate, savage howl.“Elise, I don’t want to die. Save me! Please!”I doubled over in pain as each vertebra pushed against my skin. Claws burst from my fingertips, staining the silver fur on the backs of my hands with blood.I lost control and collapsed to the floor. I pressed my forehead against the ground and dug my claws into it. A snarl tore from my throat, and I coughed up a mouthful of blood.Garrett’s mark suddenly burned like fire. A second later, the burning stopped. The unbearable sensation of being torn apart slowly faded.I lay on the floor, drained, gasping for air.I struggled to lift my hand, then laid it over Garrett’s mark. Tears poured down my face. The mate bond between Garrett and me was broken. We were nothing to each other anymore. At that same moment, Garrett’s heart seized. He suddenly dropped to

When it was time to break the mate bond, Garrett didn’t show up.I searched all over the pack grounds and finally found him on the hill out back.I demanded coldly, “Why didn’t you show up?”Garrett looked at me, his lips pressed together and his expression apologetic. It was a long time before he spoke.“Elise, we’re fated mates. If we break the bond, Lena’s going to have a really hard time in the pack.“And people will curse my name and laugh at me.”He took a step toward me.“Elise, I’m begging you. Let’s just keep things the way they are. Whatever you want from now on, I’ll...”Keep things the way they are?So I’m supposed to suffer through all of this just to spare him the ridicule and make life easier for Lena in the pack?I cut him off, furious. “Why should I? What gives you the right to do this to me?”Garrett’s lips moved. His brow furrowed, as though he were struggling to hide his anguish.“Elise...”I didn’t want to hear his excuses. I turned and hurried away.Whether he agr
