Chapter 3

Author: Crystal K
"Stop!" the Elder surged toward the altar, his voice ragged with panic. "Shelly, you'll kill the pup!"

My hands trembled, hovering over my belly as the golden light flickered at my fingertips.

The images kept replaying in my head.

Ford, kissing Kyra, telling her she was the one he truly wanted.

But the mate bond, a stubborn thorn in my soul, still throbbed with a phantom ache for him.

A treacherous part of me still loved the man he was supposed to be.

Dammit, I still loved the liar.

"I'll give him one last chance," I said, pulling my hands back.

The Elder sighed in relief and stepped back.

My heart pounded as I reached out to Ford through our mind-link.

It took him a long time to answer.

"Shelly?" His voice was tight with impatience, the tinny sound of a TV buzzing in the background.

"Starlight," I said, my voice hoarse.

It was our private code, our promise.

It meant I need you, come now.

He was silent for a few seconds.

"Shelly, I'm a little busy right now—"

"Ford," I cut him off, tears finally falling. "Starlight."

I repeated our code, my voice a desperate plea.

"Look, Shelly," his tone became dismissive. "I know you're upset, but Aiden is—"

A woman's voice, a sultry purr, slid through the link. "Baby, who's that?"

It was Kyra.

"No one important," Ford replied.

No one important.

I heard the rustle of clothes, followed by Kyra's triumphant purr.

"Is that your little Luna whining again? Tell her the Alpha is far too busy for her tonight."

The mind-link snapped shut.

I stood frozen, unable to process what had just happened.

Our starlight code.

It was the symbol of our love, his most sacred promise to me.

And now, to him, it was nothing.

"Shelly—" the Elder said, his voice full of concern.

I wiped my tears and pressed my hands back onto my stomach.

"Don't try to stop me," my voice was terrifyingly calm. "He chose betrayal. I won't let my child bear that shame."

The golden light flared again, stronger this time.

"You'll kill him!" the Elder shouted, lunging forward.

"No," I shook my head. "I'm not killing him," I said, my voice hollow. "I'm simply putting him to sleep. Hiding him away until his father is worthy of him."

The Life Weaver's power flowed out of me in a torrent, wrapping around the small life inside.

I could feel his strong life force, a warm, burning flame.

But now, I had to dim that flame.

The ritual lasted for an hour.

My face grew paler and my forehead was slick with sweat, but my hands remained steady.

I held them there until the warm connection to his life suddenly went still.

I pulled my hands back and staggered, nearly collapsing. "It's done," I gasped. "He's safe now. Just sleeping."

The Elder checked me over, his expression grim. "Shelly, you've used too much of your life force. You need to rest."

I nodded and turned to leave the altar.

Just then, footsteps echoed behind me.

"Such touching motherly love."

Kyra sashayed onto the altar, a triumphant smirk plastered on her face.

"That little thing in your belly… has he gone quiet?"

Her eyes glinted with malice. "You never thought he'd actually choose me, did you? That he'd give up his mate and his heir for me?"

Shelly's POVOne year later, I was in Billy's private estate, organizing medical equipment and preparing to start my life over as a surgical healer.CRASH!The front door was thrown open with violent force."Shelly!"Ford's voice, desperate and broken, echoed from the living room. I set down my scalpel and walked calmly toward the sound. Billy was already blocking the doorway, his eyes burning with a lethal fury."How dare you show your face here," Billy's voice was colder than ice.Ford was on his knees. His cheeks were hollowed out, his eyes sunken deep into their sockets. He looked like a skeleton. Three months of torment had utterly broken him."Billy, please, just let me see her," his voice was a ragged whisper. "Just once. That's all I ask."In the space of a heartbeat, Billy was gone, and a massive silver wolf stood in his place. He lunged. The sound of claws tearing flesh filled the room. Ford didn't fight back. He just let Billy's rage rip into his body."That's enough," I sai

Shelly's POVAfter the "plane crash," I woke up in the Winterstone Pack's medical center, so weak I could barely lift my hand.Faking my own death had nearly cost me my real one."You nearly died for real." Billy sat by my bed, his face tight, his eyes a war of fury and fear. "Shelly, was he worth it? Risking your life for that bastard?"I turned my head toward the window as the wail of sirens pierced the night."What's happening?" I asked, my voice thin."Rogues," Billy growled, his fists clenched at his sides. "They hit the border. We have a dozen warriors down, some critical."Just then, the doors to the medical center burst open."Hurry! This one's critical!""Massive blood loss, pulse is fading!""This kid's leg is torn to shreds!"The air turned thick with the stench of blood and fear, a cacophony of screams, cries, and the frantic orders of the healers.I pushed myself to sit up."I have to help.""Are you insane?" Ford's POVMy blood turned to ice."What?" The word was a low growl."Alpha, the Blackrock Pack has always been peaceful," the Beta swallowed hard. "The war threat Kyra spoke of—it never existed."The air in the room felt thick enough to suffocate me. It was all a lie. Aiden's death. Shelly's despair. The "death" of our child. My Luna's suicide. All of it for a threat that was never real.If Kyra hadn't claimed she and our unborn child were in danger from the Blackrock pack, I never would have faked my death and abandoned Shelly!"Bring Kyra to me," my voice was deathly calm."Alpha—""Now!"Ten minutes later, Kyra was pushed into the room. She still had no idea what had happened, a smug smile on her face."Aiden, what did you need me for—" Her words died in her throat when she saw my eyes. There was no emotion in them. Only a bottomless, dark abyss."I said," I snarled, my voice dropping to a low growl, "KNEEL."The full force of my Alpha command hit her like a physical blow.

Ford's POVI was on my knees, the letter clutched in my trembling hand. Blood dripped from my knuckles, staining the edges of the paper, but I felt no pain. The last sentence was seared onto my retinas:"Ford, I miss you so much. The very air feels thin without you. Wait for me. Our baby and I will be with you soon.""No, no, no—" I shook my head wildly. "Shelly, it wasn't supposed to be like this—"She thought I was dead. She thought she'd lost me, so she took her own life.I had killed her."Alpha!" The Beta burst into the room, his eyes widening at the blood and debris. "What are you doing?""She thought I was dead!" I looked up, my eyes filled with a desperate madness. "She thought she lost me, so she—" I couldn't finish the sentence."Alpha, you need to calm down—""CALM DOWN?" I let out a wild, hoarse laugh. "I killed my mate," I choked out, the words like acid in my throat. "I killed her with my own two hands."The Beta approached me cautiously. "Alpha, the Luna's death was a

"Let me die here.""Alpha, you can't give up!" my Beta yelled, grabbing my arm. "The pack needs you!"Needs me? I murdered my Luna. The void in my chest was a wound that would never heal, a constant, screaming reminder of what I had lost.Back in the pack lands, I refused all treatment, all comfort. I walked straight to our bedroom. The place where Shelly and I had spent countless nights. Her faint scent of jasmine still lingered in the air.My eyes fell on the photo frame on the nightstand. Ford's POV"Tonight was perfect," Kyra purred, snuggled against me and tracing circles on my chest. "Shelly's slap made my face swell, but seeing you stand up for me like that made it all worth it."I stroked her long hair. "She's just overwhelmed by grief. She'll accept reality eventually.""Do you think she'll ever accept us?" Kyra looked up at me."She has no choice," I kissed her lips softly. "I'm the Alpha of this pack. What I say, goes."Kyra smiled, satisfied. "And our baby—""Will be the most beloved heir," I promised.BANG!My Beta burst in without knocking, his face ashen."Alpha!" he said, his voice trembling. "Something's happened!"I shot up. "What is it?""The Luna's plane—" the Beta choked on his words, "it went down."The temperature in the room dropped to freezing."What?"
