Chapter 2

Author: Stars
I came home and set the mate bond dissolution papers on the table, then sat and waited for Damien.

It was well past midnight when the door finally opened. Damien rushed toward me.

"You—"

Before I could speak, he seized me by the collar and slammed me backward into the edge of the table. Pain shot through my spine, and I gasped.

His eyes were bloodshot, veins bulging at his temples, staring at me like he wanted to tear me apart. "The antidote. Where is it?"

I could barely breathe. "What... antidote? I don't know what you're talking about."

He hurled me onto the couch. "Don't play dumb! Vivian was poisoned with wolfsbane. She's in the hospital. The doctor says only a specific antidote can cure it. She told me everything — you did this to her."

My vision darkened at the edges as I fought for air, my mind reeling.

"She's pregnant! She could lose the pup if she doesn't get the antidote soon. Do you have any idea how devastating this is for a mother? How could you be so cruel?"

I had no idea what he was talking about. All I knew was that he was hurting me over some other woman.

Damien was torn with turmoil, but at the sight of my tear-blurred eyes, his tone softened He dropped to his knees before me. "Elena, please. I know how you feel right now. I'll explain everything later. Just tell me where you hid the antidote. If we wait any longer, Vivian could die."

Watching him kneel there, desperate — my heart clenched.

Seven years ago, he'd knelt just like that. For me.

I'd been captured by rogue wolves. Damien had charged into the pack to save me, but he was outnumbered and beaten to the ground. They dragged me further and further away, my screams growing fainter.

Then — Damien knelt before them and begged.

"Please. Let her go. I'll do anything."

The mighty Alpha, kneeling before rogues. The humiliation should have been unbearable. But Damien hadn't cared. He only cared about saving my life.

Now I was seeing that same desperate look on his face. But it wasn't for me. It was for another woman.

I thought they were just a fling, but now it seemed Damien had truly fallen for her.

The realization cut through me like a blade. When I could finally breathe again, my voice came out raw. "It wasn't me."

He didn't believe me. He grabbed my shoulders and shook me. "This isn't the time for games! She told me everything — you had someone poison her water!"

Falsely accused with no way to defend myself, all I could do was cry and deny.

His gaze turned glacial. He scanned the room, then stormed into the kitchen.

Before I understood what was happening, he came back holding a bag of berries.

Horror flooded through me. "What are you doing? You know I'm allergic to those!"

Pain and reluctance flickered in his eyes, but his hands were anything but gentle.

"I'm sorry, Elena. I don't want to hurt you. I have no choice. Just give me the antidote and I'll pretend none of this happened."

I didn't poison anyone. How would I know where the antidote was?

I tried to run, but he caught me and pressed the berries to my lips.

"Last chance. Where's the antidote?"

I clenched my jaw and shook my head.

Disappointment filled his eyes. "I didn't want it to come to this. You forced my hand."

He pinched my nose shut. Gasping for air, my mouth opened involuntarily, and he shoved the berries in.

Blisters erupted across my skin. The suffocation washed over me as well.

"I just want you to feel what Vivian felt. Give me the antidote and I'll give you the allergy medicine."

Berry juice mixed with tears on my face. My vision blurred. Damien's face dissolved into nothing, and then — darkness.

Under the stunned gazes of every guest, Damien walked toward me and dropped to one knee."Elena, I know this is all my fault. I was an idiot. I see that now. Give me one last chance — I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you."Before I could speak, Adrian stepped in front of me, his expression dark as thunder. "You're proposing to my mate at my mating ceremony. Do I not exist?"Damien's eyes swept over Adrian with contempt. "This is between Elena and me. Who she chooses is her decision."The two stood bristling, moments from blows. With Alphas from every major pack watching, I couldn't let this escalate.I stepped between them and looked Damien in the eye. "I've made my position clear. Our bond is dissolved, and I have a new mate. Stop interfering with my life.""I don't recall inviting you. Leave now, or I'm calling the guards."Even that wasn't enough. Damien's desperation had obliterated his pride.Under my threat, far from being scared, he only clung to me all the more re

Damien looked up, raw pain in his eyes. "We had an agreement — a temporary dissolution. Once Vivian was gone, we'd get back together."He glared at Adrian, teeth clenched. "I don't care that you've been with someone else. Just end it with him and we can—"I cut him off. "Let me make this perfectly clear. Our bond is dissolved. Who I choose as my mate is no longer your concern. Understand?"The light in his eyes went out, piece by piece. His already gaunt face turned ashen. He knew he'd been wrong. But was I really not going to give him even one chance to make things right?"If you don't leave, I'll call the guards."My tone left zero room for negotiation. Damien's remaining hope went cold.He clutched the ring so hard his knuckles went white. "I won't give up. I'll prove myself to you."I watched him go, then turned to Adrian with an apologetic wince. "I'm sorry — he came looking for me and you got caught in the middle.""He's my ex. Our bond is dissolved. I have no idea why he showed

"I don't care about any of that. It's you I want. And any child of yours — I'll love them like my own.""The only thing is — I can't have children. Can you accept that we'd never have a child together?"He watched me, hope and fear warring in his eyes. This was a man who'd fought countless battles, quelled rebellions, stared down death with a silver blade at his throat — and never flinched. But confessing to the woman he loved? That terrified him.Seeing him anxiously rubbing his hands together, I couldn't help thinking: he was kind of adorable. When I didn't respond, the light in his eyes dimmed."It's okay. I'm not pressuring you. I just wanted you to know — I'll wait. However long it takes.""I won't bother you anymore. If you ever need anything, I'm here."He turned to go, reluctant and resigned. Then he heard me mutter under my breath:"I don't want any more children either."He spun around, eyes blazing. "Elena — does that mean — are you saying yes?"He looked like an excited pup

I turned around. Adrian. My pulse jumped. Had he noticed me staring? Before I could ask, he spoke first."Do you have a moment? Would you join me for dinner?"The unexpected invitation caught me off guard, but I nodded. Maintaining relations between allied packs was important, after all.He chose a private room at an upscale restaurant. To my surprise, every dish he ordered was something I loved.I knew this dinner wasn't just about food. Something else was coming.Sure enough, halfway through the meal, he set down his fork. "Elena... I need to know. Was it something about me?"I hadn't expected that. My fork stopped midair. When I looked up, his eyes were full of quiet hurt."When you agreed to the mating, I was happy for a long time. But then..."He was doing his best to keep his emotions in check, but the disappointment showed.I hadn't realized my decision had affected him this deeply."No — it wasn't you. You didn't do anything wrong.""Then why won't you go through with it?"I se

The plane touched down in Northwind territory. The moment I stepped off, I saw my parents waiting at the gate.I'd held myself together through everything Damien had put me through. But seeing them — seeing the worry etched into their faces — something cracked. Tears spilled before I could stop them.I threw myself into my mother's arms and sobbed. Every wound, every humiliation, every swallowed scream came pouring out at once."Mom, I'm sorry. It's my fault — I was stubborn, I chose wrong, and I almost put my pup in danger."Her eyes reddened. She stroked my hair. "You're home now. That's all that matters. I made your favorite dinner — we'll get some good food in you."Even my father — stoic as ever — couldn't hold back his tears. His fists clenched at his sides. "That man isn't worthy of you. And he dared treat you like this.""I've already terminated every partnership and investment with his pack. Any pack that allies with him from now on will answer to me. His days as Alpha are num

At the mention of the child, the hatred in Damien's eyes intensified.Vivian'd used that bastard to string him along. And now she had the audacity to claim it was his.He seized her by the hair and dragged her outside. She screamed and clawed at his hands, but he didn't soften for a second. He hauled her all the way to the garage. His guards had already brought in the man he'd sent for — a hospital staffer, bound and gagged on the concrete floor. When Vivian saw him, cold sweat broke out across her skin. She hadn't expected Damien to dig this deep.He flung her to the ground beside the man. "Last chance. Whose child is it?"The game was up. Vivian threw herself at Damien's feet, clutching his leg, sobbing. "It wasn't my fault... it was an accident... I was scared... I know I was wrong, please, let me go!"Damien laughed — a sound without warmth. "Let you go?"He walked over to the bound man and ripped the gag from his mouth. The man immediately started begging."It was all her! She use
