I blinked, snapping out of the trance, and stepped forward to hand her the bouquet. “Happy birthday,” I said.

Her smile widened as she brought the flowers to her nose, inhaling deeply. “Thank you,” she said.

We ended up at a small cafe not to far from her workplace.

We sat across from each other, the low hum of the conversation around us doing nothing to calm my nerves. My hands trembled slightly under the table and I clenched them to keep still, watching her scroll through her phone.

“Sorry about that,” she said finnaly setting it aside. “I had to inform my assistant to finish sometimg off.

“It’s fine,” I replied.

She looked up at me her eyes curiously. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”

“Because I wanted it to be a surpise,” I said honesly.

“It was a surprise alright,” she said with a small smile, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

Another second of silence settled between us.

“You look…”

We both spoke at the same time, and then stopped, laughing awkw
