"Erin, don't be mad at Gavin."

Mia tried to sit up as she spoke.

"He's just too worried about me. My health has always been fragile. If it weren't for going to get my medicine, you wouldn't have ended up like this."

Gavin immediately eased her back against the pillows and tucked the blanket around her.

"Don't move. Your wolf still isn't stable."

He didn't look at me when he said it.

Leah poked her head out from under the blanket and pinched her nose in disgust.

"Mama Erin, you're so dirty."

I looked at the girl I had raised since she was little.

She was Gavin and Mia's daughter.

After Mia left Grey Ridge, I was the one who raised Leah.

The first time Leah's wolf ears appeared, I held her under the moonlight all night.

When she lost her first baby tooth, I helped her bury it beneath the oak tree in our backyard.

But now she clung to her birth mother's arm, shrinking away from me in disgust.

"Leah, is that any way to talk to your mother?"

Gavin's reprimand barely had any bite.

Then he finally turned to me.

"Did you change your clothes?"

I didn't answer. I turned to get my suitcase.

The snow-covered suitcase was wide open.

All the clothes inside were soaked through.

"I'm sorry, Erin." Mia looked apologetic. "Leah was looking for a toy earlier and accidentally knocked your suitcase over."

Gavin walked over and tossed his jacket into my arms.

"Wear this for now. We'll buy you something new when we get down the mountain."

My fingers trembled slightly.

Six months ago, Mia had shown up at our door with red-rimmed eyes, saying she'd been poisoned with wolfsbane and had nowhere else to go.

She said she only needed to stay a few days, just until her old injury stabilized.

Gavin had looked at me then and said she was Leah's birth mother, after all.

He said she was pitiful.

But a few days turned into months.

Her clothes found their way into our bedroom.

Her scent swallowed mine again.

Old photos of her and Gavin appeared in the living room.

I was his mate now, yet somehow I had become the intruder in Grey Ridge.

I went into the bedroom and changed into Gavin's oversized jacket.

Snowmelt kept dripping from my hair.

Soon, the jacket was soaked through too.

The door opened.

Gavin walked in, glanced at me, and pulled out a hair dryer.

"Come here."

"If you don't dry your hair, you'll have a headache tomorrow."

I hesitated for a moment, then sat down.

Warm air flowed through my hair.

His fingers threaded through the strands, gentle.

He used to dry my hair for me after every bath.

He used to say, "The skin behind your wolf ears hates being damp. Leave it wet too long and you'll get a headache."

He'd also said, "When we're old, I still want to dry your hair for you like this every day."

I blinked away the dampness gathering at the corners of my eyes.

"Get some sleep. We still have a long way to go tomorrow."

He turned off the hair dryer and patted my shoulder.

"Gavin."

He stopped and looked back at me.

"Do you remember why we came here?"

He froze for a moment.

Then frowned.

Then his face tightened. "Erin, how long are you going to keep this up? You saw how bad Mia's injury is. If her wolf loses control, this could turn deadly. You've always been stronger than she is. Stop making this harder than it needs to be."

He stepped forward and reached for the top of my head out of habit.

I tilted my head slightly, dodging his hand.

Gavin's hand froze in midair.

"She's Leah's mother. I'm only taking care of her for Leah. You understand that, don't you?"

I said nothing.

I only tightened my grip on the ultrasound photo in my pocket.

It was our unborn child.

Three months ago, we had promised to tuck the ultrasound photo beneath a moonstone at the pass.

To ask the Moon Goddess for her blessing.

So the child could find us again in the next life.

But he seemed to have forgotten all about it.

"Enough. I'll take you tomorrow, okay?"

He turned and headed for the door.

"Let me check if Leah's blanket is tucked in. Get some sleep."

I looked at the ultrasound photo in my hand.

Snowmelt had soaked it until the tiny outline blurred more by the second.

In autumn, Mrs. Hayes's condition deteriorated. The doctor said three months, at most.I brought Leah to stay at my place for the time being. She'd matured so much more than a year before. No crying, no fussing.Every day she carried her backpack to school on her own and came home to do her homework by herself.Only occasionally would she jolt awake from a nightmare, calling for her mother. One afternoon in late October, my assistant pushed open the door."Erin, Mrs. Hayes passed away."I stood up, grabbed my coat, and headed out.By the time I reached the hospital, her body had already been covered with a white sheet.Leah sat on the bench outside the room. She hugged her knees without making a sound.I walked over and sat beside her.She leaned into me, burying her face in my arm.She didn't cry out loud. But her whole body was shaking.I held her and patted her back gently."Leah, Grandma isn't in pain anymore."She asked, her voice muffled."Mama Erin, is it just going to be me fro

After the Grey Ridge work review, I met up with former colleagues for dinner.Someone brought up Gavin."Did you hear? Prosecutors charged Gavin, and a judge ordered him held pending trial.""What about Mia?""Gone. She took the money her brother had moved and fled the country. Every asset in her name has been liquidated or transferred.""So Gavin lost everything?""Worse. He can't even afford private counsel. His house and car are frozen, and Grey Ridge won't cover his legal bills. I heard he called every friend he has. Nobody would help.""Serves him right. Erin treated him so well, and he just had to put his ex-mate on a pedestal.""Exactly. Look at Erin now. She went from project lead in Geneva to an appointment overseeing the entire Eastern District."On the way back to the hotel after dinner, my assistant handed me an envelope."Erin, someone came to the front desk looking for you today. Couldn't find you, so they left this."I opened the envelope.Inside was a handwritten letter

The divorce proceedings went more smoothly than I'd expected.Gavin hired the best lawyer and tried to stall. But my lawyer presented a comprehensive trail of evidence. The timeline of Mia's residency in Grey Ridge territory.Text messages documenting Gavin's months of neglect. My medical report after losing the pup.The screenshot of Mia's herbal-medicine certificate. And the testimony Leah had unwittingly given. The court granted the divorce. Geneva was colder than I'd imagined. My first week on the job, I worked until two in the morning almost every night. Not because I was busy.Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw that bowl of broth.I remembered that night. The pain so bad I rolled off the bed, blood soaking through my nightgown.Gavin drove me to the pack healer, gripping my hand the entire way and telling me over and over that I would be okay. And he had already known. He knew Mia had done it.He chose to keep it from me.For three months, every time I blamed myself.Every time I thought I was the one who hadn't protected the baby.Every time I lay in the dark with a hand over my empty belly, crying until my whole body shook. He saw all of it.And didn't say a single word.In the second week, my lawyer sent a message."Ms. Bennett, Gavin Hayes has refused to sign. His attorney filed a formal response contesting the divorce, and Grey Ridge has refused to submit the mate-bond release to the Elder Council.""File t

I stared at the international posting contract on my phone, checking every detail.Geneva Neutral Zone.International Pack Council, Geneva Neutral Zone Field Office.Project Lead for Cross-Border Territory Agreements. From now on, I was no longer just the Grey Ridge Alpha's mate.No longer the always-understanding Erin in someone else's household. My phone buzzed. An unknown number.I hesitated for two seconds, then answered."Erin, where are you right now?"Gavin's voice was low and taut.I could tell he was reining in his emotions."Leah said you left with your suitcase. You don't dissolve a mate bond on a whim. Come back so we can talk this through.""You got the agreement?"I didn't answer his question.Silence on the other end for a few seconds."Erin, don't threaten me with divorce. You're not impulsive. Come back to the hotel.""It's not a threat."My voice was flat.Even I was surprised by how calm I sounded."I meant every word. Sign the papers, or we'll meet in court and befo
